Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf a Nintendo eShop payment fails on a Japan-region account, first confirm that the Nintendo Account country/region is Japan and that your payment method or code is eligible for that storefront. Then check available balance and family purchase restrictions. Nintendo’s Japan support pages document these common constraints, but they do not identify the reason an individual bank declines a transaction or prescribe a fix for every error code.
1. Confirm the Nintendo Account is set to Japan
Check the country/region on the Nintendo Account you use for the purchase, and make sure you are opening the Japan eShop. Nintendo’s Switch eShop guidance says its Japan-specific instructions apply when the account country/region is Japan: Nintendo Support: How to purchase in Nintendo Switch eShop.

If the account is set to another country or region, a Japan-market code may not redeem. Do not change regions simply to bypass a payment decline without checking the effect on your account and purchases.
2. Check whether your payment method matches the console and region
Switch 2: foreign payment instruments are not accepted for Japan eShop top-ups
For adding balance in the Japan eShop on Switch 2, Nintendo lists credit card, PayPal, and prepaid card as methods. It says credit cards issued abroad, PayPal accounts opened abroad, and prepaid cards sold abroad cannot be used in the Japanese eShop. This rule is stated for Switch 2; do not assume identical coverage for another model without checking Nintendo’s relevant guidance: Nintendo Support: Add balance on Nintendo Switch 2.

Switch: use one of Nintendo’s documented console top-up methods
Nintendo documents adding balance from the eShop account information screen on Switch. The listed methods are credit card, prepaid card number, or PayPal. The support instructions do not establish that every foreign-issued instrument will work on Switch, so a decline alone does not confirm the reason. See Nintendo’s Switch eShop purchase instructions.
Nintendo Account website: prepaid code only
Nintendo’s website balance-add flow accepts prepaid codes; credit card and PayPal are not available through that web flow. If you are trying to use a card or PayPal there, use the console route instead, subject to the model and regional restrictions above. Source: Nintendo Support.

3. Add balance through the right route
- On Switch: open Nintendo eShop, go to the account information screen, select the current balance, then choose the option to add balance. Follow the prompts for credit card, prepaid card number, or PayPal.
- On the Nintendo Account website: use the balance-add option to enter a prepaid code. Credit card and PayPal are not offered through this web flow.
- On Switch 2: use the balance-add flow and a listed method that meets Nintendo’s Japan-region requirements.
Nintendo’s support page explains that balance is needed for digital purchases and lists these top-up routes: Nintendo Support: Switch eShop purchases.
4. Check the code’s sales region before redeeming it
A Japanese-market download card or prepaid card must match the account region. Nintendo Support Japan states: 「日本国内向けに販売されているダウンロードカードやプリペイドカードの番号は、ニンテンドーアカウントの『国/地域』設定が『日本』になっていないと引き換えできません。」 In English: codes on download and prepaid cards sold for Japan cannot be redeemed unless the Nintendo Account country/region is set to Japan. Check both the card’s intended market and the account setting before buying or entering a code. Source: Nintendo Support Japan.

A prepaid card can be a fallback if another supported payment route is unavailable, but verify that the specific card is for Japan. The cited support guidance establishes the region requirement, not the availability or suitability of any particular retailer listing.
5. Check family purchase restrictions
A family-group purchase restriction may block purchases using existing balance and may also block adding balance by credit card. Nintendo says adding balance with a prepaid code is not restricted by that setting, but a family restriction can still prevent buying goods with the resulting balance. Check the relevant family settings if the payment method appears valid but a purchase is blocked: Nintendo Support: Family group and purchase restrictions.

6. Check the account balance and purchase type
Before retrying, check the balance on the Nintendo Account being used. Balance belongs to that account, cannot be merged with another account, and is nonrefundable; Nintendo also says digital product purchases are nonrefundable. Confirm the account is the intended one before adding funds or completing a purchase: Nintendo Support: eShop purchase information.
Nintendo Switch Online renewal
If an automatic Nintendo Switch Online renewal payment by card or PayPal fails, the renewal does not go through and automatic renewal is turned off. If renewal is set to use balance and funds are insufficient, renewal also fails and automatic renewal is turned off. Check the membership status and renewal setting after resolving the payment issue: Nintendo Support: Nintendo Switch Online automatic renewal.

Preorders
A preorder paid from balance alone is automatically cancelled if the balance is insufficient when settlement occurs. A card- or PayPal-funded preorder can also be automatically cancelled if the required balance top-up fails, including when the card is expired or over its limit. Check the preorder status rather than assuming that a failed charge will retry successfully: Nintendo Support: Preorder settlement and cancellation.
7. If the payment still fails
Keep the exact error code and contact Nintendo Support and the payment issuer. Nintendo’s cited guidance describes payment methods, regional conditions, account balance, and purchase controls, but it does not diagnose the issuer-side reason for a particular declined transaction or give a universal remedy for every error code. The exact code, card type, issuing bank, location, account settings, and transaction type can affect the next step.
For older systems, do not apply current Switch instructions to Nintendo 3DS or Wii U: Nintendo says credit-card and transit IC payments stopped being available in those eShops on 18 January 2022. Source: Nintendo Support: 3DS and Wii U eShop payment methods.
