If your Xbox Series X won’t read a game, Blu-ray, or DVD, first check whether the problem follows the disc or stays with the console. Clean and cross-test the disc, then try the documented full-shutdown step. One unreadable disc alone does not prove the console’s optical drive has failed.
First, check whether the Xbox is failing to read or eject the disc
A disc that ejects normally but is not recognized is a reading problem. A disc that remains inside the console is an ejection problem; use the separate ejection steps below rather than treating it as evidence that the drive cannot read discs. How to troubleshoot a disc the console will not read
1. Inspect and gently clean the disc
Check for dirt or visible damage. If it is dirty, wipe it gently with a soft, clean, slightly damp cloth, as described in the model-specific iFixit guide. Dry or damaged discs may still fail; cleaning does not repair scratches or physical damage.
2. Find out whether the problem follows the disc
- If possible, try the suspect disc in another Xbox. If it also fails there, the disc is a more likely cause. If it works there but not in your Series X, the console is implicated.
- Try a different disc known to work in another Xbox or console. If that disc reads in your Series X, the original disc is more likely to be the issue. If several known-working discs fail in this Series X, a console-side problem becomes more likely.
The first comparison is recommended by iFixit; testing another known-working disc is an additional diagnostic check, not a guaranteed diagnosis.

3. Try the documented full-shutdown step
The iFixit guide’s troubleshooting sequence changes the Power Mode, fully shuts down the console, then retests the disc:
- Open Settings > Profile & System > Settings > General > Power Mode & Start-Up, and choose Energy-Saving. These are the menu names in the guide; they may change with software updates.
- Hold the Xbox button on the console for 10 seconds, until the console shuts down.
- Turn the console back on and try the disc again.
This is a troubleshooting attempt, not a promised fix.

If the disc will not eject
For a stuck disc, the iFixit guide recommends trying the normal options first:
- Restart the console, then press its eject button.
- Alternatively, open the controller guide, go to the Home screen, highlight the inserted disc, and press X.
- If neither works, turn off the console and unplug all power cords and cables before using the manual eject method. The guide says to insert a large, straightened paper clip into the eject hole along the bottom edge, near the round stand.
Do not use the manual eject hole while the console is connected to power.

When to seek repair
If multiple discs known to work elsewhere fail only in your Series X after the checks above, a console-side fault is more likely. That pattern does not identify a specific failed component, so it is not enough by itself to conclude that the laser or optical drive needs replacement.

The cited guidance identifies supported Xbox Series X Model 1882 units with 14-digit serial numbers; it says the guide does not support units with 12-digit serial numbers. Check Microsoft’s current regional eligibility before buying a part. If any self-repair prerequisite is not met, Microsoft points owners toward an authorized provider or out-of-warranty repair.
Understand what optical-drive replacement involves
iFixit’s Xbox Series X optical-drive replacement guide documents a replacement procedure, but opening the console is a later repair option—not a routine first troubleshooting step. The guide requires fully powering down and unplugging all cables, and warns that drive alignment matters during reassembly. The procedure does not establish that any replacement drive will work in every Series X.
