Check the card’s region and currency marking before paying. Nintendo’s rules vary by market: North American guidance describes cards as country-specific, while Nintendo Spain and Germany say cards may work in other countries using the same currency. Do not assume that a card will work everywhere its currency is accepted.
How to choose a compatible Nintendo eShop gift card
- Find the recipient’s Nintendo Account country. On Nintendo Switch, the eShop country follows the country set on the Nintendo Account. See Nintendo’s instructions for checking or changing the account country.
- Check the card’s intended country or region. Nintendo says the country of use is printed on the back of the card. Its North American support guidance says cards are specific to a country and redeemable only on systems or accounts set to that same country. Read Nintendo’s foreign-card guidance.
- Apply only the regional rule Nintendo states for that market. Nintendo Spain and Germany describe a same-currency allowance for their markets, including a French card being usable in Germany or the Netherlands. That guidance is not a blanket guarantee for every card or country; check the local Nintendo support page and card marking. Nintendo Spain’s guidance and Nintendo Germany’s guidance set out those regional rules.
- Choose a locally available denomination that is close to the recipient’s planned purchase. Consider whether a small remaining balance is acceptable.
If you are buying online, check the seller’s stated region before purchase; a digital code can be just as region-restricted as a physical card. Nintendo says selection and inventory vary by retailer and region, so verify the denomination currently offered by the seller.

Region rules: country-specific in North America, with a stated European exception
Nintendo’s North American support page says an eShop card is intended for a particular country and can be redeemed only on a system or Nintendo Account set to that country. It also says Nintendo cannot exchange a card intended for one country for a card intended for another. This is the safest assumption unless the card and the relevant regional Nintendo guidance say otherwise.
Nintendo’s Spain and Germany support pages describe a same-currency rule for their markets. For example, they say a French card may be used in Germany or the Netherlands, which use the euro. Read that as guidance for the markets covered by those pages—not proof that any card will work in every country that shares its currency.

For a cross-border purchase, check both the card’s printed region or currency and the support guidance for the buyer’s market. Do not buy extra value as a way to get around a region mismatch.
Which denomination should you buy?
There is no single worldwide denomination menu. Nintendo’s listed amounts differ between markets, and retailer stock can vary.

These are examples, not complete catalogs or interchangeable options. Nintendo Canada says selection and inventory vary by retailer and region. Check the recipient’s local Nintendo or retailer listing for the amount actually available.
Match the amount to the planned purchase
- Estimate the price of the game or other eShop purchase the recipient wants.
- Choose the nearest locally available card amount, bearing in mind that the balance may not match the purchase exactly.
- If you are unsure what they want, choose a locally available amount rather than guessing at a larger value.
What happens if you change the account country?
Changing the Nintendo Account country is not a simple way to redeem a mismatched card. Nintendo says the existing eShop balance does not carry over when the account country changes. Check the recipient’s account country before buying rather than relying on a country change after the fact.

If the card and account regions do not match
Nintendo says it cannot exchange cards intended for one country or region for cards intended for another. Contact the retailer about the purchase, or give the card to someone whose account can redeem it, as Nintendo’s North American support suggests.
Check the card terms for its market
Terms can differ by country, so read the terms attached to the specific card rather than assuming another market’s rules apply. For example, Nintendo’s U.S. terms say a U.S. card is valid only with U.S. Accounts; once redeemed, its balance is tied to one account and cannot be transferred. Those U.S. terms also say the balance does not expire, has no fees, and is non-refundable unless required by law. Read Nintendo’s U.S. terms.
