Reinstalling an Xbox game from disc does not, by itself, require deleting your saved progress. On an Xbox One or Xbox Series X with a disc drive, insert the compatible disc and follow the console’s installation prompts. To bring back cloud-synced progress, sign in to the Xbox profile that used the save, connect to Xbox network, and let any synchronization finish before playing. Xbox Series S has no disc drive, so it cannot install a game from a physical disc.
Check that your Xbox can use the disc
This disc-installation guidance applies to Xbox One and Xbox Series X models with an optical drive. Xbox Series S is digital-only. A disc also needs to match a game and console generation the system supports; owning a disc does not make every title compatible with every Xbox.
For some backward-compatible games, Microsoft says the game downloads from the disc and the disc must remain in the drive to play. That guidance applies to games on Microsoft’s backward-compatibility list, not necessarily every Xbox game: Microsoft’s backward-compatibility information.
Install or reinstall the game without deleting its save
- On an Xbox One or Xbox Series X with a disc drive, insert the compatible game disc.
- Follow the console’s installation prompts and allow the game to install. Keep the disc available; some games require it in the drive when you launch them.
- Sign in to the Xbox profile associated with the game’s progress and connect the console to Xbox network.
- Launch the installed game and wait for any save synchronization to complete before playing or responding to a conflict prompt.
Microsoft’s current disc announcement says supported Xbox One and Xbox Series X disc games can be claimed by inserting the disc and launching the game, while the physical disc continues to work as before. This does not establish that every disc title is supported: Xbox Wire’s announcement.
#1 Best Overall
- From the creators of Grand Theft Auto V and Red Dead Redemption
- The deepest and most complex world Rockstar Games has ever created. 4K Ultra HD not available on Xbox One or Xbox One S consoles
- Covers a huge range of 19th century American landscapes
- Play as Arthur Morgan, lead enforcer in the notorious Van der Linde gang
- Interact with every character in the world with more than just your gun
The installation and the saved progress are separate. Reinstalling game software is not the same as deleting its save. Avoid choosing a save-deletion option when your goal is only to install the game again.
Let cloud synchronization finish before resolving a conflict
Cloud saves can restore progress that has synchronized to Xbox network. Microsoft’s Xbox Game Development Kit documentation describes an active cloud-download synchronization flow; when a device reconnects and cloud data is newer, the game treats local data as stale and ends the session for synchronization. That is technical guidance for developers, so individual games may present different prompts: Microsoft Learn’s save-sync documentation.

If a sync or save conflict appears, do not rush through it. Let any active synchronization finish, and read the choices carefully before selecting a version or deleting data. The same profile and an online connection are important for retrieving that profile’s cloud-synced save.
Understand the difference between deleting locally and everywhere
A Microsoft Community answer distinguishes “Delete from console,” which removes the local save copy, from “Delete everywhere,” which removes it from the console, cloud, and other consoles. Because this distinction is described in a community answer rather than a current step-by-step support article, treat the prompt wording on your console carefully: Microsoft Community discussion.

- Delete from console: removes the local copy; it is not the same as erasing the cloud copy.
- Delete everywhere: removes the save from the console, cloud, and other consoles. Do not choose this to troubleshoot an installation if you want to keep your progress.
If your latest progress does not return
Cloud recovery depends on the save having synchronized. If your most recent progress existed only on the console and never reached the cloud, reinstalling the game cannot guarantee that it will be recovered. Preserve the console’s current state, avoid broad save-deletion choices, and check the game-specific support route before taking further action.
