On an iPhone or iPad, open Settings > Bluetooth, tap your AirPods, then tap the Info button to see their charge status. To check that each earbud is charging, put both in the case, open its lid near your device, and inspect the status. How you recharge the case depends on its model: it may use Lightning, USB-C, or a supported wireless charger.
Check AirPods battery levels on iPhone or iPad
- Open the AirPods case lid, or take the AirPods out of the case.
- On your iPhone or iPad, open Settings > Bluetooth.
- Tap the name of your AirPods, then tap the Info button to view charge status.

Check AirPods battery levels on a Mac
- Open the AirPods case lid or take the AirPods out.
- Hold them near your Mac.
- Click Control Center in the menu bar, choose Sound, then select your AirPods.
Check whether each AirPod is charging
Seat both earbuds in the case and open the lid near your iPhone or iPad. Check the charge status for each one. If one appears not to charge or is not working, Apple recommends this check:
- Leave both AirPods in the case for 30 seconds.
- Open the case near your iPhone or iPad and check the status again.
- Test the affected AirPod while leaving the other AirPod in the closed case.
Apple provides this sequence for an AirPod that is not working: If your left or right AirPod isn’t working.

Understand the case status light
The light indicates different things depending on whether the earbuds are inside the case: with AirPods inside as you open the lid, it shows their charge status; with the AirPods out, it shows the case’s charge status. Apple defines green as fully charged and amber as less than one full charge remaining.
The light’s position varies by case. Many later cases have a light on the front, while the Lightning Charging Case for AirPods 1 and 2 has an internal light. If you cannot find it, identify your case model rather than assuming the light is in the same place as another generation.

Charge the AirPods and their case
Recharge the earbuds
Put the AirPods in their charging case when you are not using them. The case stores multiple full charges for the earbuds.
Charge by cable
Check the connector on your case before choosing a cable: connect its Lightning or USB-C cable to a USB charger or port. Apple says you can charge the case with or without the AirPods inside.

Charge wirelessly, if your case supports it
MagSafe and Wireless Charging Cases can charge on a Qi-certified charging mat or MagSafe charger. Close the case and place it on the charger with the status light facing up. Apple Watch charger support applies only to specific case models listed in Apple’s instructions; do not assume that every wireless case supports it. What low-battery alerts mean
Apple says iPhone and iPad low-battery notices appear at 20%, 10%, and 5% remaining. A tone sounds at 10% and again shortly before the AirPods turn off. Separate low-charge and charge-complete notifications are not universal: Apple’s current instructions limit them to listed AirPods models with current firmware and iOS or iPadOS 26 or later.

Optimized Battery Charging is designed to reduce the time AirPods Pro and AirPods 3 or later spend fully charged; Apple’s guide says it learns from charging routines with an iPhone or iPad. AirPods Pro 3 also has an Optimized Charge Limit. These features can affect whether the displayed level immediately reaches 100%; availability depends on model and software.

Check seating and status first
Make sure each earbud is seated in the case, then check the charge status on your iPhone or iPad. If one side seems unresponsive, follow the 30-second check above and test that AirPod by itself.

Check the power connection
For a persistent problem, make sure the cable and power adapter match the case and are firmly connected, and confirm the outlet works. Apple advises connecting the AirPods and case to power for at least 15 minutes as a troubleshooting step.
Reposition a wireless case
If you have a Qi-compatible case, place it on the charger with the status light facing up. If the light does not turn on, reposition the case. If it still will not charge, try a compatible cable and power adapter.
Check for debris before resetting
Check the case charging port for debris and clean it according to Apple’s model-specific instructions. Reset only after the earlier checks: Apple notes that resetting also clears custom settings. See Apple Support: If your AirPods won’t charge for its troubleshooting steps.
