Virtual prototypes can let automotive software teams begin MCU-dependent integration before target silicon is available, then inspect software and peripheral behavior with more visibility and control than a conventional function trace alone. A 2014 use case by Victor Reyes of Synopsys shows how that approach can help with AUTOSAR configuration, software bring-up, CAN debugging and multicore analysis; it describes a workflow, not a measured performance comparison.

Why AUTOSAR bring-up crosses so many layers

An AUTOSAR application does not usually interact directly with an MCU peripheral. Application behavior is divided into software components, and the configured Runtime Environment (RTE) connects those components and provides their communication mechanisms. Beneath the RTE, Basic Software (BSW) supplies the operating-system, communication and hardware-facing infrastructure.

That layered design supports separation and reuse, but it also means a hardware-dependent behavior can involve a chain of configuration and software: software component (SWC), RTE, OS, services, and microcontroller abstraction. A peripheral event travels back up through software layers to reach application logic. When integration fails, the symptom and its cause may therefore appear at different points in the chain.

Reyes’s article, “Dealing with automotive software complexity with virtual prototyping – Part 2: An AUTOSAR use case,” was published May 27, 2014, and excerpted from Better Software. Faster! It describes the architecture and workflow as understood in that period; it is not a replacement for current AUTOSAR specifications.

How the AUTOSAR layers fit together

Application software components

Software components encapsulate control functionality. Their configured interfaces let application developers express interactions without tying every component directly to a specific MCU peripheral.

RTE: configured communication glue

The RTE is generated from configuration. In the article’s explanation, it provides the glue for configured mappings and logical communication between software components and the underlying software environment.

BSW: services and hardware-facing layers

The article divides BSW into several kinds of infrastructure:

What a virtual prototype adds before silicon is ready

A virtual prototype models a target system sufficiently for software work to proceed before physical MCU silicon is available. In Reyes’s account, this lets a team start MCU-dependent software development earlier and inspect how software interacts with peripherals. The article makes a workflow claim, not a quantified claim about schedule savings, performance, or debug productivity.

Its central debugging advantage is observability and controllability: engineers can correlate software execution with modeled hardware state and can drive peripheral inputs in a repeatable way. This can make a virtual prototype useful while configuration and software are being brought up, rather than requiring a team to wait for the final silicon or to rely only on a hardware prototype board.

Approach When it helps Visibility and control described in the 2014 article
Virtual prototype Early MCU-dependent software work, before target silicon is ready Can expose software execution alongside modeled peripheral state and accept controlled stimulus.
Wait for target silicon Work that requires the actual MCU The article does not describe this as an early-start option; it offers no comparative measurement.
Hardware prototype board Software work on available physical hardware The article positions virtual prototyping as an alternative with additional visibility and control; it reports no head-to-head results.

How software and CAN hardware state can be correlated

The article’s CAN example illustrates the value of looking across abstraction layers instead of treating a transmitted frame as an isolated output. A software trace can be followed alongside controller state, memory-mapped registers and mailbox data, then connected to controller-side bus state and the frame that appears on the bus.

In the example, the transmitted CAN message has identifier 555 (hexadecimal 0x22b) and payload Hello. The point is not that this message is a benchmark or a prescribed AUTOSAR test. It is an illustration of a debugging path: follow the executing instructions and software activity into the register and mailbox state that leads to the observed frame.

How to inject CAN stimulus and coordinate it with software

Reyes describes using model commands to inject CAN messages, with scripts coordinating the stimulus against simulated time or hardware breakpoints. That makes it possible to reproduce a peripheral event at a chosen point in software execution rather than relying on an uncontrolled external event.

  1. Choose the CAN message to inject, including its identifier and data bytes.
  2. Set the desired simulated time or breakpoint condition in the model/script workflow.
  3. Inject the message and inspect how the software and modeled controller respond.

The article’s concrete example injects CAN ID 720 with two bytes at a specified simulated time; it does not state the bytes or the time value. For more complex closed-loop scenarios, it says a virtual prototype can connect to external ASIC or plant models made with tools such as Simulink or Saber, or to a rest-bus simulation tool such as Vector CANoe. Those are examples from the 2014 article, not a statement of current compatibility or support.

Why AUTOSAR-aware monitors can make traces more useful

A raw function-call trace can become difficult to interpret when a large software stack generates a long sequence of calls. Reyes proposes AUTOSAR-aware monitors that surface higher-level events—tasks, interrupt service routines (ISRs), RTE events and service APIs—so the engineer can understand the execution in terms of the software architecture rather than only individual functions.

The article’s example follows a timer-triggered task, a message send, preemption, an event wake-up and receive behavior. Monitors can filter task and ISR activity from the function-call graph and add logging for RTE and service APIs. Compared with a standard function trace, this makes the architectural sequence easier to inspect; the article supplies no quantitative signal-to-noise or debugging-time comparison.

Trace approach What it exposes Best suited to

AUTOSAR-aware monitors Tasks, ISRs, RTE events and service API activity layered onto execution visibility Relating a long function trace to task scheduling and AUTOSAR-level interactions.

What the article says about multicore debugging

The 2014 article says AUTOSAR 4.0 included methods for multicore development and distributing execution across cores. Its historical description has each core with an RTE and OS copy, while BSW access is limited to one core, with inter-OS-application communication connecting the pieces. Treat these details as period-specific: verify current multicore architecture and configuration requirements against the applicable AUTOSAR specifications.

For debugging, Reyes describes synchronously pausing the complete simulated system—including cores, peripherals and connected plant models—to inspect state at the same simulated moment. That can help when a cross-core or software-to-peripheral interaction depends on event ordering. The claim is the article’s description of a capability; it does not report an independent test.

Where this use case is useful—and what it does not establish

The workflow is most relevant when software integration depends on configured AUTOSAR layers and hardware events that are hard to observe or reproduce on their own. It offers three complementary techniques: inspect software and peripheral state together, inject controlled stimulus, and elevate a noisy function trace into tasks, interrupts and RTE-level activity.

Reyes’s article does not provide an independent product evaluation, comparative performance results, schedule-savings figures, or a current compatibility matrix. It also does not establish that a virtual prototype substitutes for testing on target hardware. Its value is best read as an engineering approach for starting integration earlier and making interactions easier to inspect, with final claims about a specific current tool or AUTOSAR release requiring current documentation.
