HDMI-CEC lets compatible devices send control commands over an HDMI connection, so actions such as switching a TV on, choosing an active source, or adjusting a sound system’s volume may work across devices. It is separate from ARC and eARC, which return audio from a TV to an external audio system. CEC features and menu names vary by model, and a working HDMI connection does not guarantee that every device will support every command.
What is HDMI-CEC?
HDMI Consumer Electronics Control (CEC) is a control feature carried over HDMI. Compatible devices can use shared commands to coordinate functions—for example, a TV remote may control the volume of a compatible audio device, or a streaming-device remote may turn the TV on or off. Android’s CEC implementation also describes One Touch Play, which lets a playback device request that it become the active source.
CEC is not a promise of universal remote control. Devices may support different commands, and some functions still require the original remote. Roku cautions that “CEC does not allow control of all aspects of every device.” Sony likewise warns that CEC features differ by brand and may not work across brands. An HDMI version number by itself does not establish which CEC functions a particular product implements. See Roku’s guide to HDMI-CEC and ARC and Sony’s HDMI Ports guide.
How do I enable HDMI-CEC?
Look for the CEC setting on the TV and, when the device documentation calls for it, on the connected device as well. Manufacturers use different names; Sony notes that “HDMI CEC functionality has different names on different brands.” Menu paths also vary by model and software version, so use the manual for your exact equipment rather than assuming a path applies to every set.

- Enable CEC on the TV and connected device wherever their instructions require it.
- Test the particular function you want—such as power control, source selection, or volume—rather than assuming every CEC feature is available.
Is HDMI-CEC the same as ARC or eARC?
No. CEC carries device-control commands; ARC and eARC carry audio from a TV back to an AVR or soundbar through HDMI. For audio return, the external audio device normally connects to the TV’s port marked ARC or eARC. HDMI Licensing Administrator describes eARC as carrying audio from broadcast, streaming, or connected sources to an AVR or soundbar over one HDMI cable, with support for high-bitrate formats. HDMI LA’s eARC overview
eARC is an advancement intended for higher-bandwidth audio, and not every ARC-capable device supports it. Roku’s support guide says eARC is not backward-compatible with ARC, so check both devices’ specifications before relying on an eARC connection. A port marked ARC does not prove that CEC is enabled; conversely, an audio-return issue does not by itself show that CEC control has failed. Diagnose audio routing and device control as separate functions, even when both are involved in the same setup.

Why is HDMI-CEC not working?
There is no single cause or universal fix established for CEC failures. The issue may be limited to one behavior, such as power or input switching, or it may concern ARC/eARC audio routing instead. Use this sequence to isolate the failure; the steps are diagnostics, not guaranteed repairs.
- Describe the failure. Write down the TV, source, and audio-device models; the HDMI ports in use; and whether the failed behavior is power, input selection, remote control, volume, or audio return.
- Check CEC at both ends. Confirm that CEC is enabled on the TV and the connected device, following their model-specific instructions. Sony says CEC must be enabled on both devices in its cited guide. If audio return is involved, also check the relevant ARC/eARC setting and connect devices through the marked ports.
- Check audio routing separately. Select the TV’s external audio output and confirm that the soundbar or receiver is on the corresponding input. Samsung’s cited TV flows recommend selecting Receiver (HDMI); they also advise setting Digital Output Audio Format to Auto when format support is limited by the connected equipment. Exact labels and availability may vary by model.
- Temporarily disconnect other HDMI devices. Samsung recommends removing external devices and retrying playback. If the behavior changes, reconnect devices one at a time and repeat the same test to see whether a particular connection correlates with the failure. This can help isolate a variable; it does not prove that the device is defective or guarantee a fix.
- Consider the cable only when relevant. Inspect for damage and check the exact model requirements if a cable fault or specific eARC requirement is plausible. Samsung recommends a certified HDMI cable as a troubleshooting step. Sony specifies an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable for eARC on the particular TV described in its guide; that is not a general requirement for ordinary CEC. Neither recommendation establishes that a more expensive cable will fix a CEC interoperability problem.
- Repeat the same test after each change. Record software versions and retry the same power, source-switch, and volume actions. If the problem persists, use the manufacturers’ model-specific support channels. The cited guides do not establish one reset sequence that resolves intermittent CEC behavior.
How do I test HDMI-CEC?
The right test depends on whether you are checking a household setup or verifying an implementation. A consumer can check whether intended functions work; that is not the same as certifying a product against HDMI requirements.

- eARC/ARC to RCA Audio Extractor: eARC to RCA Audio Extractor can extract audio signals via the TV's eARC channel and transmit them as analog stereo to speaker/amplifiers.Compatible only with HDTV ARC/eARC ports; other HDMI ports are not supported
- CEC Volume Control: Set the TV’s audio format to PCM. (Not compatible with Dolby 5.1/DTS 5.1.) You can easily control the TV’s volume using the TV remote control without having to get up to adjust it manually
- Wide compatibility: Works with most TV brands that support ARC/eARC, such as Samsung, LG, and Sony. The RCA ports are compatible with amplifiers, powered speakers
- TV Settings 1. Enable the TV’s CEC feature. 2. Enable eARC (if your TV only supports ARC, skip this step). 3. Set the TV’s audio output to ARC device. 4. Set the audio format to PCM
- Plug and Play:No complicated driver installation required. Simply connect the converter's USB to the TV's USB port or power adapter
Testing a household setup
Choose the CEC behavior you expect and test it directly: for example, whether a device can turn the TV on or off, become the active source, or control compatible audio volume. If audio return is also in use, test that path separately by checking the ARC/eARC connection, TV sound output, and audio-device input. Record the equipment models, settings, ports, and outcomes so a change can be compared with the same baseline.
Testing an Android implementation
The Android Open Source Project describes an HDMI-CEC control service and a hardware abstraction layer (HAL) for sending and receiving messages and handling hotplug events. It says Android CEC implementations are tested and verified through CTS tests. Android device roles include playback devices that can issue One Touch Play and audio systems that handle system-audio mode and ARC. The AOSP documentation also describes configurable power-message scope. AOSP: HDMI-CEC control service

AOSP describes HDMI-CEC 2.0 as improving interoperability, Remote Control Passthrough, and certification testing, while noting that suitable device, user, and HAL configuration is needed for 2.0 operation. CTS is the Android implementation-testing route described by AOSP; it is not a substitute for HDMI compliance testing.
Testing HDMI specification compliance
HDMI Licensing Administrator describes an ecosystem of authorized test centers and authorized test equipment manufacturers. Its HDMI 2.2 Specification Overview says products must comply with the specification and its Compliance Test Specification (CTS) before claiming HDMI 2.2 compliance. That overview does not provide detailed CEC test cases. Access to HDMI specifications is through the adopter channel; HDMI LA notes that version 1.3a is available through a download form at its Specifications and Programs page.

- ARC Audio Extractor: Extract audio from the TV’s ARC/eARC port and transmit it to the ARC Optical 3.5mm port on a soundbar or amplifier. Supports Dolby DTS 5.1 and PCM 2.0 audio output (does not support 7.1 audio output). Ideal for TVs without standard audio output ports.
- Supports Simultaneous Audio Output: The ARC Optical 3.5mm port supports simultaneous audio output. You can connect different output devices
- Compatibility: The ARC input port is only compatible with the eARC/ARC ports on televisions; it is not compatible with HDMI ports. The ARC output port is only compatible with the ARC ports on soundbars and the HDMI IN ports on amplifiers. The ARC input or output ports must be connected to the correct devices; otherwise, they may not function properly.
- Volume Control Support: The ARC (Soundbar) and 3.5mm output ports on the ARC audio converter support volume adjustment via the TV remote control, but the optical output port does not.
- Support 192KHz audio sampling rate: YEUGICEO ARC audio separator supports 24 bit/192KHz audio sampling rate to ensure high-quality sound quality. The ARC port of the separator is connected to the ARC interface of the TV, and the optical interface is connected to the soundbar, amplifier, and active speaker The amplifier interface is connected to the HDMI IN interface of the amplifier (audio output only, no video)
For engineering evaluation, a useful test matrix can track device role, supported CEC version and features, power state, active source, audio-system participation, hotplug and reconnection behavior, brand/model/firmware combination, and observed messages or outcomes. These are practical dimensions to investigate, not a quoted official HDMI CTS checklist. Detailed normative coverage and pass/fail thresholds are not established by the public pages cited here; a cable swap or a consumer setup test cannot certify a device.
