Adam Osborne, the technical writer and entrepreneur behind the Osborne 1, died in India on March 18, 2003, aged 64. Introduced in 1981, the Osborne 1 became the first commercially successful portable computer—not the first machine anyone could call portable—and helped make computing practical for people who needed to carry a computer between places.

Who was Adam Osborne?

Osborne built a career across technical writing, book publishing and personal computing. Born in Thailand to British parents, he grew up in India. He studied chemical engineering at the University of Birmingham, then earned a master’s degree and doctorate at the University of Delaware, in 1966 and 1968 respectively. The University of Delaware’s 2003 memorial records his education.

He started out writing technical books and went on to establish a publishing company before turning to computer hardware. The Guardian described his work in publishing and computing as three distinct careers in less than two decades. In 1981, he founded Osborne Computer Corporation and introduced the Osborne 1.

What made the Osborne 1 important?

Osborne presented the Osborne 1 at the West Coast Computer Faire in June 1981. Its significance lies in its commercial success and its attempt to make a useful computer travel with its owner. The University of Delaware and the Computer History Museum describe it as the first commercially successful portable computer. Calling it simply the “first portable computer” is less precise: the answer depends on what counts as portable and whether the claim is about a working prototype, a product for sale or a commercial success.

The Osborne 1 was a compact, suitcase-sized computer meant to be carried like luggage and stowed under an airline seat. It was a luggable, not a modern laptop: it ran on mains power rather than a battery. The Washington Post reported a 1981 retail price of $1,795.

Feature Osborne 1 details
Processor Zilog Z80, according to EE Times
Memory 64 kilobytes of RAM, according to EE Times
Storage Two internal 5.25-inch floppy drives; no hard disk, according to EE Times
Screen Five-inch display, according to EE Times
Weight About 10 kilograms (22 pounds), according to EE Times; 24 pounds, according to The Washington Post and the University of Delaware
Power Mains-powered, as described by The Guardian
Reported retail price $1,795 in 1981, according to The Washington Post

The weight varies across the accounts; the figures should be treated as source-specific reported values, not averaged into a single exact measurement. The Washington Post also reported Osborne calling the machine “adequate” and saying it delivered “90 percent of what most people need.” The bundled software and all-in-one design helped make it useful despite its small screen and lack of a hard disk.

Why did Osborne Computer Corporation fail?

Osborne Computer Corporation grew quickly, but growth did not guarantee a lasting business. Competition increased, and customers had a reason to delay purchases after the company announced a successor, the Vixen, before it was ready. Buyers who expected a newer model could wait rather than buy the Osborne 1. This customer hesitation became known as the “Osborne effect,” though it was one contributor, not a complete explanation for the company’s troubles.

Business problems and competition also weighed on the company. EE Times reported that it filed for bankruptcy in 1983. Osborne later described announcing the new machine as “a big mistake,” according to EE Times. The episode is often reduced to a single ill-timed announcement, but the company’s decline also involved the broader challenge of sustaining a fast-growing computer business in a competitive market.

What did Osborne do after the computer company?

After Osborne Computer Corporation, he founded Paperback Software. Its spreadsheet program became the subject of a lawsuit brought by Lotus; EE Times reported that Lotus won. Osborne’s later career therefore continued in software and publishing, rather than ending with the failure of his hardware company.
