Your qualifying degree and branch, minimum marks, accepted GATE paper, and admission route depend on the specific university and program. Check the current official notice for the exact course and admission category before applying.
What determines whether you are eligible?
Start with the exact program name. Materials Science and Engineering, Materials Engineering, Mineral Engineering, and Industrial Metallurgy are related fields, but their published entry criteria are separate. A degree accepted for one course is not automatically accepted for another.
For each program, check these requirements together:
- Qualifying degree and branch: Does the program accept your undergraduate engineering discipline, a science postgraduate degree, or both?
- Minimum marks or CGPA: Check the threshold, how it is calculated, and any category-specific rule.
- GATE or another route: Find the accepted GATE paper or any stated alternative examination.
- Selection process: Admission may use counselling, a written test, an interview, or a combination.
- Admission category: Sponsored, self-sponsored, and working-professional routes may have different requirements, including work experience.
These are not interchangeable checks: satisfying a marks threshold does not establish that your branch or admission route is eligible.

How requirements differ at selected Indian institutions
The examples below illustrate why applicants should compare the rules for their intended course rather than rely on a general rule for “materials” or “mineral processing.” They are drawn from official institution pages and notices; only IIT Hyderabad’s example here is explicitly for July 2026 admissions.
| Program | Qualifying background and marks | GATE or other selection details |
|---|---|---|
| IIT Kanpur, M.Tech Materials Science and Engineering | The official department page describes an engineering-degree route requiring at least 60% or CPI 6.0/10. It also describes a science-postgraduate route with specified M.Sc. backgrounds, mathematics at B.Sc. level, and minimum marks at both B.Sc. and M.Sc. | The engineering route requires a valid GATE score in a listed discipline. The science-postgraduate route calls for a valid GATE score or CSIR-NET JRF. See the IIT Kanpur department criteria for accepted backgrounds and GATE disciplines. |
| IIT (ISM) Dhanbad, M.Tech Mineral Engineering | The official page lists qualifying engineering backgrounds including mechanical, mining, mineral, chemical, environmental, fuel, metallurgy, geology, and production engineering. Its general GATE-candidate threshold is 60% or 6.0 CGPA, reduced to 55% or 5.5 CGPA for SC/ST candidates. | The page lists GATE paper codes for Mineral Engineering and describes a separate direct-admission provision for qualifying IIT graduates. Check the complete current rules on the IIT (ISM) eligibility page. |
| University of Hyderabad, M.Tech Materials Engineering | The official page lists specified engineering degrees and science master’s degrees, with at least 55% in the respective qualifying examination. | Regular seats are described as being filled through CCMT with a valid GATE score. See the University of Hyderabad admissions information for the program’s listed qualifications and current instructions. |
| NITK Surathkal, Materials Engineering and Materials Process Technology | The M.Tech page lists these programs under Metallurgical and Materials Engineering. The complete branch-wise criteria should be checked in the current information bulletin. | The page describes regular admission through CCMT for candidates with a valid GATE score. Refer to the NITK M.Tech admissions page and current bulletin for full eligibility details. |
| IIT Hyderabad, M.Tech Industrial Metallurgy (July 2026 admissions) | The brochure distinguishes regular, self-sponsored, and online admission routes. The online route is for working professionals with more than two years of experience. | The regular route requires an eligible engineering or science background and a valid GATE score in listed papers. The self-sponsored route uses a written test and/or interview and does not require GATE. The online route also describes written-test/interview selection. Consult the IIT Hyderabad July 2026 brochure; this adjacent metallurgy example is not a universal mineral-processing rule. |
Is GATE compulsory?
Not in every route described by these institutions. Regular admissions at the University of Hyderabad and NITK are described as CCMT routes for candidates with valid GATE scores, while IIT Kanpur’s criteria specify GATE for its engineering route and GATE or CSIR-NET JRF for its science-postgraduate route. IIT Hyderabad’s July 2026 brochure describes a self-sponsored route that does not require GATE, with written-test and/or interview selection.
Even when GATE is required, the accepted paper matters. Use the program’s own list of eligible papers rather than assuming that any GATE score—or a score in a broadly related discipline—will qualify.

Can you apply with your B.Tech branch?
Possibly, but the accepted branches vary. IIT (ISM) Dhanbad’s Mineral Engineering listing includes several engineering disciplines as well as geology; the University of Hyderabad and IIT Kanpur publish their own specified engineering and science backgrounds. Check your exact degree title and branch against the program’s current list. If your branch is not named, do not assume it is accepted because it seems closely related.
What marks or CGPA do you need?
There is no common threshold across these examples. IIT Kanpur specifies 60% or CPI 6.0/10 for the cited engineering route; the University of Hyderabad lists 55% in the qualifying examination; and IIT (ISM) Dhanbad gives a general GATE-candidate threshold of 60% or 6.0 CGPA, with 55% or 5.5 CGPA for SC/ST candidates. These figures apply to the stated institutions and routes, not to all M.Tech materials or mineral-processing programs.
Also check which examinations count toward the threshold. For IIT Kanpur’s science-postgraduate route, the stated criteria include minimum marks at both B.Sc. and M.Sc.; a single overall percentage may not answer whether you meet that rule.
What if you are applying as a working professional or through a non-regular route?
Read the criteria for that category separately. IIT Hyderabad’s July 2026 Industrial Metallurgy brochure, for example, describes an online route for working professionals with more than two years of experience and selection by written test/interview. Its self-sponsored route is separate and does not require GATE. Those conditions apply to the brochure’s specified program and cycle, not to all online or sponsored M.Tech courses.

- Open the current official page or admission brochure for the exact program. Do not rely on a general department description if the admission notice provides cycle-specific rules.
- Match your degree and branch to the listed qualifications. Check whether the route is for engineering graduates, science postgraduates, or both, and whether specific subjects are required.
- Check marks and category conditions. Confirm the threshold, the degree stages used in its calculation, and any applicable category rule.
- Confirm the exam and paper. Check whether GATE is required, which paper codes are accepted, and whether an alternative such as CSIR-NET JRF applies to your route.
- Check how selection works. Confirm whether you apply through CCMT or a separate institutional process, and whether a test or interview is required.
- Verify category-specific conditions and dates. For sponsored, self-sponsored, or online admission, check experience requirements and the applicable cycle’s instructions.
Requirements can change between admission cycles. The institution’s current official notice for your program and category is the authority to use when deciding whether to apply.
