Data-center growth can contribute to electricity costs, but a higher bill alone does not show that it did. To find out whether it may be a factor where you live, compare the charges on your bill over time, then trace any changes to your utility’s rate filings, tariff and state regulator decisions. The answer depends on your utility and region: rates, bill labels and regulatory authority vary.
How data-center growth can affect electricity costs
Large data centers use substantial amounts of electricity. Serving new large loads may require utilities or grid operators to add generation and transmission capacity. Whether those investments raise a household’s costs depends on available capacity, market conditions, how regulators allocate costs and whether projected facilities are actually built and use the load they requested.
The key issue is not just whether demand is growing, but who pays for the resulting investments—and who bears the risk if expected demand does not materialize. The U.S. Department of Energy identifies fair cost allocation and stranded-investment risk as central questions in large-load rate design: DOE’s brief on large-load growth and rate design.
What national data-center electricity estimates do—and don’t—tell you
Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory’s June 2026 reference case estimates that U.S. data centers will consume 649 terawatt-hours (TWh) in 2030, equal to 11.8% of projected U.S. electricity use. Its scenarios span 9.5% to 15.3%; compounded uncertainty bounds for consumption are 521 to 843 TWh. These are model estimates of future use, not measured outcomes or estimates of how much an individual household’s bill will change. See LBNL’s 2026 report.

- Various Monitoring Parameters: The power meter plug can monitor the power (W), energy (kWh), volts, amps, hertz, power factor, cost, minimum and maximum power (W), cumulative days and time of your appliances. By switching 7 display modes, you can easily know the various parameters while the appliance is working. The home energy monitor can also calculate and display how much power your appliance uses and how much electricity bill it cost in cumulative time
- Upgraded LCD Display: With large screen size 2.36 inch x 1.85 inch, clearer monitor backlit, our electrical usage monitor can display the data clearer and more visible no matter day or night. 180°full wide viewing angles is great for reading and recording the data in any angles. No need to stand on the front of the display and bend over to read the numbers
- Adjustable Backlight Time: Our upgraded watt meter has 5 options of backlight time. The default backlight time duration is 10 minutes(bL-0). If you want to change the backlight time, you can press and hold "UP" and "DOWN" button at the same time to enter backlight time setting, then press "UP" and "DOWN" to select the backlight time (bL-0 =10 minutes, bL-1=1 hour, bL-2=4 hours, bL-3=8 hours, bL-4=always on), finally press the "COST" to save the backlight time settings
- Overload protection: When the power of the appliance exceeds the overload power, the LCD will display “OVERLOAD” to warn the user. All the buttons will quit working and can only be workable when you lower or remove the load power. The default overload power is 3680W and is adjustable from 0 to 3680W. In general, you need to set the overload power to 1800W before using. Just press the "function" button for more than 3 seconds to enter the setting
- Data Memory Function: The wattage meter will record your power consumption data when you remove it from socket, or remove appliances from the electricity monitor. You can directly see the last data when you use it next time. This function can also automatically save the data when there is a sudden power failure
For context, a 2024 LBNL report put data-center consumption at 176 TWh, or 4.4% of U.S. electricity use, in 2023. That report estimated a 6.7%–12% share by 2028; its forecast has since been superseded for the later-year outlook by the 2026 update. DOE summarizes the 2024 report here. Neither set of national figures identifies the cause of a particular utility’s rate change.
Check your bill before assigning a cause
- Compare equivalent billing periods. Note the number of days, kilowatt-hours (kWh), rate plan and total due for each bill. Higher usage, a rate change, or both may explain an increase. The labels and fields depend on your utility.
- Separate the charges. Look for generation or supply, transmission, distribution, fuel or power-cost adjustments, taxes and riders. Utilities use different labels. In Virginia’s example, those categories are shown separately, along with deferred fuel charges.
- Find the effective dates. Locate the tariff or rate schedule and the state commission order in effect during each billing period. Identify which component changed and when. A change in supply charges, by itself, does not show that a data center caused it.
Trace rate changes through utility and grid filings
Utility rate cases and tariffs
Search your utility’s rate-case filings, tariffs and commission orders for evidence linking large-load service to investments and customer charges. Useful details include data-center load forecasts, planned generation or transmission projects, cost-of-service studies, separate customer classes, minimum bills or usage commitments, deposits or other financial security, and rules for recovering costs if forecast load does not arrive. A filing that discusses data centers is relevant context; the stronger evidence is a documented investment, a decision assigning its costs and the bill charge that follows.

Regional transmission proceedings
Regional grid-operator and transmission proceedings may clarify how costs are studied and allocated. In June 2026, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) directed six regional grid operators to justify or reform large-load tariff rules. The proceedings cover transmission-study processes, cost-shifting transparency, co-location and behind-the-meter generation, flexible service for large loads, and generation-adequacy reporting. Check the FERC proceeding for current status. These orders do not, on their own, establish a change to any particular household’s bill.
Why a bill increase is not proof of a data-center cause
Electricity use, wholesale prices, utility spending, approved rates and a customer’s final bill are related, but they are different measures. FERC reported that demand across organized regional markets grew 2.8% in 2024, while wholesale electricity and natural-gas prices declined overall and retail prices continued to rise. Its account also cites extreme weather, resource mix and load growth as influences on wholesale markets. The differing price trends illustrate why a bill increase alone cannot establish a cause; see FERC’s 2025 report on 2024 market outcomes.

To make a local connection, look for a dated chain: a utility or grid investment, a rate or tariff decision that allocates its cost, and the specific charge on your bill. Without that chain, data-center growth may be one pressure among several, but the bill does not prove it was responsible.
What Virginia’s estimate can—and cannot—show
Virginia’s Joint Legislative Audit and Review Commission (JLARC) estimated that a typical Dominion residential customer’s monthly generation and transmission charges could rise by $14–$37 by 2040, depending on the modeled scenario. The estimate assumes typical use of 1,000 kWh, uses 2024 constant dollars, and excludes distribution charges and several other costs customers typically pay. It is a scenario analysis for one utility, not a national forecast of total household bill increases. JLARC also found that rates at the time of its commissioned study appropriately allocated costs to responsible customers, while warning that growing demand could increase system costs for others and that new approaches may be needed. See JLARC’s report.

What to look for when comparing proposed protections
- Cost responsibility: Do large loads bear the generation, transmission and other system costs they drive, or are costs shared more broadly?
- Forecast risk: If a project is delayed, scaled back or never built, who pays for infrastructure left underused? DOE’s brief discusses stranded-investment risk; the related source addresses forecast and investment risk.
- Transparency: Are load assumptions, tariff terms, transmission costs and cost-allocation methods visible in public filings? FERC’s 2026 proceedings include transmission-cost transparency.
- Reliability: Do plans credibly address adequate generation and transmission as large loads connect?
- Connection to your bill: Which specific charge changed, under what decision, and on what effective date?
FERC Chairman Mark Christie said in a March 20, 2025 release: “The combination of rapidly increasing electricity demand, driven by hyperscale customers such as data centers, paired with the alarming rate of base load generation retirements and lack of new dispatchable generation, is not sustainable and must be addressed.” This is the chairman’s attributed statement, not a finding that data centers alone caused household price increases. Read the FERC release.
