Materials engineering studies how materials’ properties, processing, and uses relate to one another. Mineral processing engineering focuses on separating and upgrading valuable minerals from ore so they can be used in further processing. The fields overlap in materials science, metallurgy, and extractive processing, but degree names and course boundaries vary by university.

Students typically combine science and engineering foundations with mineral and material characterization, processing operations, laboratory work, and process design. Graduates may pursue roles in plant operations, metallurgy, process control, consulting, research, or environmental and sustainability work.

What does materials and mineral processing engineering cover?

Materials engineering is concerned with the properties, processing, and applications of materials. Mineral processing engineering applies engineering and science to ore: it characterizes the feed, separates valuable minerals from less valuable material, and prepares the resulting products for further use. Depending on the program, study may extend into extractive metallurgy, recycling, and process control.

The work links scientific understanding of ores and materials to the operation and improvement of industrial processes. That means considering not only whether a process can separate or transform material, but also its safety, economic feasibility, pollution control, and environmental effects.

Typical mineral-processing operations

Representative topics include sampling, particle sizing, crushing and grinding (comminution), screening, classification, gravity and dense-medium separation, froth flotation, and aqueous processing. Which operations receive the most attention depends on the program.

For a concrete course example, Penn State’s 2026–27 undergraduate bulletin describes MNPR 301 as covering sampling, sizing, comminution, physical and chemical processes, industrial applications, and pollution control. Its MNPR 401 description includes comminution, screening, classification, slurry pumping, thickening, and filtration, with applications to plant design. These are examples from one university, not a universal curriculum.

What courses might you take?

Programs commonly build from mathematics, chemistry, physics, and engineering foundations into mineralogy and mineral characterization, sampling and particle-size analysis, processing operations, laboratory work, and process design. Environmental and economic considerations may also be part of the course sequence. Depending on the degree, advanced study can include extractive metallurgy, hydrometallurgy, pyrometallurgy, recycling, or process control.

How course plans differ

The University of Pretoria’s 2024 NMP 310 module covers liberation analysis, particle sizing, comminution, screening and classification, gravity and dense-medium concentration, and flotation. Its published workload is three lectures and four practical sessions per week; that figure applies to this module alone. The university places the module in mining and metallurgical engineering degrees.

The Pakistan Engineering Council’s 2024 curriculum includes mineral classification and identification, comminution, ore sampling, particle-size analysis, gravity, electrostatic and magnetic separation, froth flotation, selective flocculation, leaching, and agglomeration. It frames the subject around comparing processing techniques and selecting appropriate ones.

How to compare programs

Similar degree titles do not guarantee the same content. Compare the actual study plan and look for:

  • The required mathematics, chemistry, physics, and engineering foundation.
  • The balance of laboratory sessions, practical work, and process-design projects.
  • Which separation and extraction processes are covered.
  • How safety, environmental effects, and economics are addressed.
  • Whether internships or other industry experience are available.
  • The program’s accreditation status and stated graduate outcomes.

For example, Papua New Guinea University of Technology describes its cited bachelor’s program as four years of full-time study. That duration is specific to that program, not a rule for all degrees with similar names.

What skills are useful?

A strong foundation in mathematics, chemistry, physics, and mineralogy helps students understand materials and interpret measurements. Depending on the role, useful technical capabilities include sampling, particle sizing, crushing, screening, classification, separation, and evaluating process performance.

Engineers also need to solve practical problems and communicate decisions clearly. Process design and optimization call for teamwork, ethical judgment, and attention to operating costs, safety, environmental effects, and social constraints.

UBC’s mining-engineering career guidance names mineral processing, material handling, mine management, sustainable facility design and operation, production-performance analysis, and methods such as sampling, crushing, screening, classification, and separation. This is related guidance from mining engineering, not a universal checklist for every materials or mineral-processing degree.

What careers can you pursue?

Published university career examples include several kinds of work across mineral processing, metallurgy, and related industries. Role names and day-to-day responsibilities vary by employer and region.

Career direction Typical work focus
Process engineer Designing, operating, and improving processing-plant operations.
Metallurgist or extraction specialist Working on the extraction and refining of materials; specialties may include hydrometallurgy or pyrometallurgy.
Process-control specialist Monitoring and optimizing process operations.
Process mineralogist Connecting ore properties and mineral characteristics to process performance.
Consultant Supporting clients on engineering and processing projects.

Curtin University lists mineral process engineer, metallurgist, process engineer or control specialist, process mineralogy specialist, and beneficiation, hydrometallurgy, or pyrometallurgy specialist among possible career options. It identifies mining and minerals processing, transportation, housing, energy, and engineering as relevant industries. Curtin describes the aim of its major as preparing students to “design, develop, optimise and manage mineral processing plants.”

How do you choose a degree?

Start with the work you hope to do. A program weighted toward separation operations and plant design may suit someone interested in processing facilities; one with more metallurgy or extraction may better match an interest in recovering and refining materials. Then compare required courses, practical experience, environmental and safety content, accreditation, and graduate outcomes rather than relying on the degree title alone.

Course catalogs and program descriptions can change. Confirm current requirements, accreditation, and course availability directly with the university before making an enrollment decision.
