To add live chat, enable a chat widget in a provider account, configure when and where it appears, and install that account’s generated code on the relevant website pages—or use a documented platform integration. Before publishing, decide who will answer messages, what visitors see when agents are offline, how you will handle visitor identity and consent, and how you will test the experience.

The exact installation path depends on the provider and account: for example, Zendesk documents distinct setups for Chat-only, Chat with Support, its older Web Widget (Classic), and messaging. The steps below cover a practical implementation and the distinctions that matter for Zendesk, Intercom, and HubSpot.

Before you install: choose the right chat workflow

First decide what visitors should be able to do. A real-time live chat workflow is designed for a conversation with an available agent. A persistent messaging workflow lets a visitor send a message that the team can handle through an inbox, including when an agent is not immediately available. Your provider may offer both, but their configuration and installation steps can differ.

Also identify the main job of the widget: sales lead qualification, customer support, or both. That decision affects which pages should show chat, which team owns incoming conversations, and whether to ask for contact details before a conversation starts.

  • The adjustable universal clip lets you attach the camera securely to your screen or laptop, or fold the clip and set the webcam on a shelf. You’re always ready for your next video call.
  • Sales: Consider showing chat on pricing or product pages and routing messages to the sales team.
  • Support: Consider showing it on help or account pages, with a clear plan for messages that arrive outside staffed hours.
  • Both: Decide how to distinguish sales questions from support requests and who handles messages that do not fit either route.

Check whether your organization already uses a support or CRM platform. An existing product may have a widget you can enable; a new widget generally requires its own account setup and website installation. Do not assume that an older tutorial matches your current product or account type.

How to add live chat to your website

1. Enable and configure the widget in your provider account

Open the provider’s chat or messaging setup and create or enable the widget. Configure the available branding and appearance options, language, team availability, and any chatflow or forms the provider requires. Use the provider’s current setup instructions for your account: a generated script is account-specific, and sample code in a help article is not a substitute for that code.

2. Decide where the widget should appear

Choose whether chat belongs on every page or only on selected pages. For a sales flow, a pricing or product page may be a more relevant entry point than every page on the site. For support, help content may be the better location. HubSpot documents targeting chatflows by page URL and visitor criteria, so a site can configure different audiences or page groups rather than treating the whole site alike.

Check the resulting rules from a visitor’s perspective: a widget may be correctly installed but intentionally hidden on pages that do not match its targeting conditions.

3. Copy the account-specific code or choose a documented integration

In the provider dashboard, find the website installation instructions and copy the generated snippet for your workspace or account. Avoid copying a placeholder snippet from an example. If the provider offers a supported integration for your site platform, follow that integration’s instructions and confirm that it applies to your product and account.

4. Add the snippet to the pages where chat should appear

For a code-based installation, add the provider’s snippet to the shared website template used by the intended pages. This is usually preferable to pasting it individually into many pages because the widget can then be managed consistently. Follow the provider’s placement instructions:

  • Zendesk’s legacy Chat directions allow placing the script in the document head or just before the closing </body> tag; the latter is recommended when avoiding render blocking is a concern.
  • Zendesk’s messaging Web Widget instructions say to paste its code before </body>.
  • Intercom instructs website owners to place the Messenger code before </body> on pages where the Messenger should appear.

These placement details come from different product workflows; do not treat them as interchangeable instructions. In particular, Zendesk says its route varies according to whether the account uses Chat alone or Chat with Support, and whether the site uses Web Widget (Classic) or messaging.

5. If you use WordPress, check the integration’s requirements

Intercom documents an official WordPress plugin installation for WordPress 4.2.0 or newer. The plugin method is unavailable on EU-hosted Intercom workspaces; Intercom advises using another installation method for those workspaces. If you use another provider, consult that provider’s current WordPress documentation rather than assuming a plugin supports every product or account configuration.

6. Keep anonymous visitor identity separate from logged-in identity

For a visitor who is not logged in, do not attach identity fields belonging to a signed-in customer or employee. Intercom specifically warns against including user_id, email, or user_hash in the logged-out visitor installation. Its July 10, 2026 help article warns that passing another session’s identity to an anonymous visitor causes privacy issues.

If the site needs chat to recognize authenticated users, use the provider’s separate logged-in-user setup and make sure identity is bound to the correct session. A visitor installation and an authenticated-user installation are not the same configuration.

7. Set up how conversations will be handled

A visible widget is only useful if its conversation path is clear. Assign ownership to a team, set the hours or availability the widget should communicate, and decide whether to request details such as a name or email address. Define what happens when nobody is available, including whether the visitor can leave a message and what response expectations you can realistically meet.

Zendesk distinguishes between pre-chat forms, shown before a chat starts, and offline forms for times when agents are unavailable. Configure only the fields needed for your workflow. HubSpot’s targeting controls can help show a chatflow to selected pages or visitor groups, but targeting does not replace a response plan.

8. Review consent and privacy settings

Review the provider’s privacy controls alongside your own site notices and data practices. Zendesk documents a privacy notice option in its messaging widget. HubSpot documents chat-cookie consent and data-processing consent controls, and distinguishes chat-cookie settings from its analytics cookie banner.

HubSpot notes that its chat-cookie consent settings will not appear to visitors identified through its Visitor Identification API. If your setup uses that API, account for that behavior when reviewing the visitor experience. Provider controls do not by themselves establish what notices or consent mechanisms your site needs: requirements depend on jurisdiction and on the data flows involved, so involve the person responsible for privacy compliance.

9. Preview, publish, and verify the visitor experience

Use the provider’s preview or test option where available, then check the actual pages after publishing. HubSpot documents a preview step, and Zendesk’s messaging setup offers a preview or test option. A preview is not a substitute for checking the site in the states in which visitors will use it.

  1. Open each intended page as a logged-out visitor and confirm that the widget appears only where expected.
  2. If your site supports authenticated chat, check the logged-in experience separately and confirm it uses the correct identity.
  3. Send a test message through the intended route and confirm it reaches the team or inbox responsible for it.
  4. Check what happens outside staffed hours, including whether the offline form or message option appears as configured.
  5. Inspect the widget on a mobile screen and confirm it does not cover important page controls.
  6. Check keyboard navigation, focus order, screen-reader labels and announcements, zoom or reflow, and mobile operation. The implementation sources cited here do not establish accessibility conformance or tested outcomes; consult the selected provider’s current accessibility documentation and test the actual site.

How the documented provider paths differ

Provider and workflow Documented setup detail Important distinction
Zendesk Chat / Web Widget Legacy Chat uses a dashboard-generated script; setup includes enabling chat, configuring appearance and forms, and adding the snippet. Zendesk documents separate paths for Chat-only versus Chat with Support, and for Web Widget (Classic) versus messaging. Use the instructions for the product and account actually in use.
Intercom Messenger The visitor-and-lead website instructions place the Messenger snippet before </body>. Logged-out visitors need a visitor setup without logged-in identity fields. The documented WordPress plugin requires WordPress 4.2.0 or newer and is unavailable on EU-hosted workspaces.
HubSpot live chat External website pages need HubSpot tracking code; chatflows can be targeted by page and visitor criteria. Review chat-cookie and data-processing consent behavior, including the documented chat-cookie consent limitation for visitors identified through the Visitor Identification API.

The useful comparison is not a universal ranking. It is whether the provider already fits your support or CRM setup, whether its conversation workflow matches your staffing and response process, and whether its controls cover the identity, targeting, and privacy needs of your site.

Common installation problems and what to check

  • The widget does not appear: Confirm the snippet or supported integration is installed on the page, the correct provider account is active, and the page matches any visibility or visitor targeting rules.
  • The widget appears on the wrong pages: Review the URL and visitor criteria in the chatflow or widget settings, then check the affected pages again.
  • Messages go to the wrong place or receive no response: Check team ownership, routing, availability hours, and offline behavior in the provider account.
  • The wrong user appears in a conversation: Review identity handling immediately. For an anonymous visitor installation, do not pass a logged-in user’s identity fields; use the provider’s separate authenticated-user guidance for logged-in experiences.
  • The installation steps do not match your dashboard: Confirm the product edition and widget type. Zendesk’s documented Chat and messaging paths are distinct, and older Web Widget (Classic) guidance may not describe a messaging setup.
  • The site layout or interaction is disrupted: Recheck the snippet placement against the provider’s instructions and test the published pages on desktop and mobile. Do not assume that a successful preview confirms the production pages behave correctly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does live chat require installing a plugin?

No. A common method is to add the provider-generated JavaScript snippet to the site template. A plugin or other platform integration is an alternative when the provider documents one for your product and account.

Can website visitors use chat without logging in?

Yes. A visitor-and-lead workflow can serve people who are not logged in. Keep their anonymous session separate from authenticated-user identity rather than passing a signed-in person’s details into the visitor setup.

Should the chat widget appear on every page?

Not necessarily. You can make placement a deliberate choice: for example, show a sales chatflow on relevant product pages or support chat on help pages. Where available, page and visitor targeting can implement that choice.

What should happen when the team is offline?

Configure the widget to communicate availability and provide an appropriate next step, such as an offline form or a way to leave a message. Set expectations your team can meet, and route those submissions to an owner.
