No sequel to Insomniac’s Marvel’s Wolverine is confirmed in the official material reviewed as of October 4, 2026. That means there is no confirmed sequel release date, story, or character roster—and it does not establish that a sequel has been cancelled or is not planned. The currently announced game is a standalone Logan adventure centered on Team X, not an X-Men team game.

Is there a sequel to the Wolverine game?

There is no official sequel announcement in the PlayStation and Insomniac material covered here. Consequently, any claims about a sequel’s release window, plot, platform, or returning characters are unconfirmed. The absence of an announcement is not proof that a sequel will never happen.

The confirmed project is Marvel’s Wolverine, a single-player, narrative-driven action-adventure developed by Insomniac Games with Marvel Games and Sony Interactive Entertainment. Sony describes it as a worldwide PlayStation 5 exclusive. PlayStation’s game page provides the current official overview.

What story and characters are confirmed in Marvel’s Wolverine?

The official premise follows Logan as he returns to Team X three years after walking away. Mutants are being hunted, and Logan seeks answers about his past. PlayStation’s story and gameplay details identify Bolivar Trask and his Reavers as threats in the mutant-hunting crisis.

Marvel's Wolverine PS5
  • Marvel’s Wolverine is a new action-packed adventure from Insomniac Games
  • Play as Wolverine and Ravage enemies with explosive brutality and unleash razor-sharp adamantium claws to deploy fast, fluid attacks and overcome impossible odds
  • An Original, Emotionally Charged Story. Beneath Wolverine’s gruff exterior and violent temperament is a man fighting for a cause greater than himself
  • A Global, Adrenaline-Fueled Journey where you slice into enemies across detailed locales such as the frosted Canadian Wilderness, the narrow streets of Tokyo, and the high and low districts of the island nation of Madripoor

Jean Grey

Jean Grey is confirmed. PlayStation describes her as a powerful telekinetic and an emerging leader among captured mutants. Her presence does not mean the game is an X-Men team adventure; the story materials frame the mutant group around Team X.

Team X, Mystique, and Sabretooth

Team X is central to the game’s setup. Narrative director Walt Williams describes it as a mutant strike force founded by Nathaniel Essex. Logan’s unexplained departure has left the group resentful. PlayStation materials also identify Mystique and Sabretooth in the game’s cast and Team X context; that is not evidence of a sequel roster.

Bolivar Trask, the Reavers, The Hand, and Deathstrike

Trask and the Reavers are connected to the mutant-hunting threat. The official story trailer also highlights The Hand and Deathstrike. These are confirmed details about the current game, not confirmation that these characters will appear in a future project.

Are the X-Men in the new Wolverine game?

Not as the team at the center of the story. In a D23 interview, Williams said, “In Marvel’s Wolverine, there are no X-Men.” The game’s official setup instead focuses on Logan and Team X in a world where mutants are being hunted. This describes the current game; it does not settle whether a future X-Men game or sequel will be made.

What is Team X?

Team X is the mutant strike force at the heart of this game’s setup. Williams says Logan has been part of it for as long as he can remember, and that he left three years before the game’s events. His return puts him back in contact with teammates who resent his unexplained departure.

Sony presents the game as an original interpretation of Wolverine’s story rather than an announced adaptation of an X-Men team storyline. Its settings include the Canadian wilderness, Tokyo, and Madripoor. Williams described it as “a wholly original story that would surprise even the most hardcore Wolverine fan”; that is his characterization of the story, not a guarantee about how players will respond.

Do you need to read the Wolverine prequel comic?

No. The official prequel comic is optional context, not a stated requirement for understanding the game. Written by narrative director Walt Williams with art by Luke Ross, it covers events leading into the game and Logan’s strained relationship with Team X. PlayStation says it can be read through Marvel Unlimited; check the service for current access terms.

Will an X-Men game follow Marvel’s Wolverine?

Official material reviewed does not announce an X-Men game after Marvel’s Wolverine. The game’s confirmed focus on Team X and its mutant characters cannot establish what Marvel, Insomniac, or Sony may make next. Treat proposed follow-up titles, characters, and release dates as speculation unless those companies announce them.
