Amazon employees reported strong dissatisfaction and intent to seek other work after the company announced a five-day office mandate. Those survey results point to a potential retention risk—not proof that employees actually quit because of the policy. The available reporting does not establish a verified count of RTO-caused departures.
What is Amazon’s five-day return-to-office policy?
In September 2024, Amazon CEO Andy Jassy announced that most corporate employees would be expected to work from their assigned office five days a week starting January 2, 2025. The company had previously described a plan for teams to try to work in offices at least three days a week in a 2021 update.
Jassy said Amazon wanted more in-person work to help teams invent, collaborate, and stay connected to company culture. That is Amazon’s stated rationale, not independent evidence that the policy improved innovation, collaboration, or performance. The announcement also acknowledged that some employees would need to adjust personal arrangements. Amazon’s September 2024 announcement set the policy and start date.
Are Amazon employees considering quitting over RTO?
Surveys conducted after the announcement found that many respondents said they were unhappy or considering leaving. They measure reported behavior and intentions among their participants; they do not show how many people later resigned.

Strategic Organizing Center survey
The Strategic Organizing Center (SOC) described an online survey of Amazon tech, sales, and other corporate employees. It reported that 48% of respondents had applied to outside jobs and 68% were somewhat or very likely to leave within a year. These are self-reported answers from the surveyed workers, not resignation figures or estimates for Amazon’s entire workforce. The SOC’s report on the survey contains its findings.
Blind poll reported by Fortune
Fortune reported that a Blind poll of 2,585 verified Amazon professionals found 73% were considering quitting after the announcement. This is a poll of verified professionals using Blind, not a census of Amazon employees or a count of departures. It should be read separately from the SOC survey: the populations and methods differ, so the percentages should not be combined into one estimate. Did Amazon employees actually leave because of the mandate?
The available reporting does not establish that. It provides no verified count of resignations caused by the mandate, no company-wide retention comparison against a credible counterfactual, and no role-by-role analysis that isolates the policy’s effect. Stated likelihood of leaving is a warning signal, but it is not the same as leaving—and a departure after the announcement would not, by itself, prove the policy caused it.
That distinction matters when interpreting the phrase “talent exodus.” The survey findings make increased retention risk plausible; they do not substantiate a completed exodus or show how large any policy-driven departure effect was.

What happened when the policy took effect?
Axios reported that approximately 50,000 Amazon employees returned to Seattle offices five days a week on January 2, 2025. The report cited INRIX data showing Seattle commute times rose 15% to 20%. Both figures are local implementation context: the employee count concerns Seattle, and the commute change does not establish that employees left Amazon. Axios also reported mixed reactions among employees. Its Seattle report describes the return and commute effects.
How should Amazon’s later workforce cuts be interpreted?
In October 2025, Amazon announced workforce reductions and said most affected employees would have 90 days to seek another internal role. The announcement did not attribute those reductions to the RTO mandate. Workforce cuts are distinct from voluntary resignations, and they cannot be used as evidence that the office policy caused attrition.
