These metrics answer different questions. In particular, on-chain transactions do not, by themselves, show that someone returned to a particular crypto app.
What each metric measures
| Metric | Unit and denominator | Question it answers | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| DAU | Unique users who perform a chosen action during one daily interval | How many users were active today under this definition? | A daily count does not show whether users return over time. The event and identity rules affect the count. Amplitude’s glossary and Mixpanel’s DAU explainer describe these choices. |
| Cohort retention | Members of a defined starting cohort who meet a return-event condition, measured against the eligible cohort | Which users return, when, and after which starting behavior? | Results depend on the cohort start, return event, interval, and calculation method. See Amplitude’s retention FAQ, chart interpretation guide, and time settings guide. |
| Wallet activity | Depends on the measure: in-app events may count users or sessions; on-chain measures may count addresses or transactions | Are people using wallet features in the app, or are blockchain addresses transacting? | An address is not necessarily a person or an app user. On-chain data alone cannot establish app retention. Blockchain cohorts can be analyzed, as in this 2021 study of Bitcoin data, but that is a different measurement unit. |
Define DAU so it reflects meaningful activity
DAU is not a universal count of everyone who opened or installed an app. It is the number of unique users who triggered the action your team has designated as active during the chosen daily interval. Amplitude defines active users through logged events in a selected interval; Mixpanel emphasizes that teams must choose what counts as a user and an action.
For a crypto app, an app-open event could measure reach, while viewing an asset or starting a send flow could represent more substantive use. These are possible tracking choices, not a universal standard. Separate user-visible actions from automatic events such as background refreshes; otherwise, routine app behavior can inflate the count without showing that someone actively used the product.
If you report both a broad activity measure and a core-action measure, label them separately and state each event definition. Also document how the product identifies a unique user, including how it handles multiple devices, accounts, or wallets. Without consistent identity rules, changes in DAU may reflect deduplication or tracking changes rather than changes in behavior.

Use cohort retention to measure return behavior
Retention starts with a defined group and asks whether its members meet a specified return condition in a later interval. Its meaning depends on two event choices: how a user enters the cohort and what qualifies as a return. Amplitude defines retention as how often users return to an app over time; the events and interval turn that broad idea into a reproducible metric.
Choose the cohort start event
A cohort may begin with a person’s first app use, account creation, wallet setup, or first successful transaction. These starts describe different populations: someone who installed an app has not necessarily set up a wallet, and someone who set up a wallet has not necessarily completed a transaction.

Acquisition cohorts group people by when they started. Behavioral cohorts group people by shared actions or properties. Label the chosen cohort clearly, and do not compare results as if they were equivalent when one starts at first use and another at a later activation milestone.
Choose a return event that matches the question
Returning to view a balance and completing a transaction are not interchangeable definitions of continued use. Choose the event that answers the question you are investigating, and keep it consistent when comparing cohorts. If the product question concerns transaction behavior, an app open alone is not evidence of a completed transaction.

Distinguish exact-period retention from return-on-or-after
“Return On” asks whether a user returned during a particular interval. “Return On or After” counts a return during that interval or later. The second method can include someone who did not return in the exact period, so the two calculations can produce different answers. State which method the chart uses; Amplitude documents this distinction in its retention FAQ.
Specify calendar or rolling time and timezone
A calendar-day interval and a rolling 24-hour window do not assign activity to time in the same way. The selected timezone also affects which calendar day contains an event. Amplitude explains these settings in its retention time guide. Include the interval type and timezone in the metric definition, especially when comparing reports or cohorts with different settings.

Keep in-app and on-chain wallet activity separate
In-app wallet analytics can record events such as wallet creation or import, asset views, the start of a receive or send flow, and a completed transaction. These events describe what a user did in the product, provided the app’s identity and event tracking support that interpretation.
On-chain analytics instead observe blockchain data, such as transactions associated with addresses. A single person may use multiple addresses, and an address may not be attributable to an identifiable app user. Therefore, an address transacting is evidence of on-chain activity, not proof that a particular user reopened or retained a particular app. Amplitude describes product analytics as event-based measurement in its overview; the distinction between app users and blockchain addresses follows from the different units those analyses observe.

Keep app and chain measures in distinct series unless you have a valid, privacy-conscious way to connect them. If you do link data, document identity resolution, deduplication, and the treatment of multiple devices, accounts, and wallets. Do not present a chain-level cohort as app retention without a defensible link between the address and the app user.
Compare the measures without conflating them
- Use DAU for the count of unique users who performed a named action in a daily interval.
- Use cohort retention to understand whether a defined starting group performs a chosen return action over time.
- Use in-app wallet events to assess engagement with wallet features, and on-chain data to assess blockchain behavior.
- Compare cohorts across acquisition channel, onboarding path, geography, or wallet setup only when groups and event instrumentation are sufficiently consistent. Differences in how groups are defined can undermine the comparison.
- When DAU rises while retention is weak, treat those as separate observations: the daily count can grow while the share of a starting cohort that returns remains low. DAU alone does not explain why.
The sources cited here establish measurement methods, not a representative, current crypto-app retention benchmark. Do not treat example percentages in an analytics chart as an industry norm. For a useful comparison, report your own like-for-like cohorts and disclose the event, identity, interval, timezone, and retention-method definitions.
