To patch a Fortinet or Zimbra vulnerability safely, identify the exact product and installed version, match it to the vendor’s advisory and fixed release, follow the supported upgrade path for that product and deployment, then verify the version and affected service on every relevant device or server. Fortinet and Zimbra use separate release channels, so there is no universal patch number or one-size-fits-all update procedure.
Before you patch: identify the installation and the fix
Start with an inventory so you can match the advisory to what is actually running. Record the product, installed version or build, hardware model or operating system where relevant, enabled features, and deployment topology. For multi-node systems, record each node separately.
- Fortinet: Record the product and, for a FortiGate, its hardware model, firmware branch, and running firmware version. Note whether the feature named in the advisory is enabled.
- Zimbra: Record the release, patch/build, operating system, and whether the installation is single-node or multi-node.
Then read the full vendor advisory or security notice—not just the CVE headline. Check affected versions, the fixed release for your branch, affected components, configuration requirements, known exploitation status, workarounds, and any supported upgrade sequence. “Latest” does not necessarily mean that a direct jump to that release is supported for your installation.
How to patch a Fortinet product
1. Match the FortiGuard PSIRT advisory to your product
Search the FortiGuard PSIRT portal by product, version, advisory identifier, or CVE. Its filters cover affected product, version, date, severity, component, and attack type. Fortinet advisories can apply to different products or branches in different ways, so use the fixed-version entry for your exact product and branch. The portal also links to Fortinet’s recommended upgrade-path tool.

Check conditions as carefully as version ranges. For example, Fortinet advisory FG-IR-26-060 concerns FortiCloud SSO being enabled and reports known exploitation. Its fixed versions differ across Fortinet products, and the advisory describes a workaround. Do not treat that example—or a fix for one Fortinet product—as a patch instruction for another.
2. Choose a supported target and plan the change
Use the advisory’s fixed release together with the recommended upgrade path to select a target reachable from the installed version. Follow the maintenance instructions for the exact device and release. Preserve an appropriate configuration backup and change record, and schedule the work according to the deployment’s redundancy and maintenance requirements; the cited guidance does not promise zero downtime.

3. Verify the running firmware and affected service
After the update and any required restart, record the device’s running firmware version and compare it with the fixed version in the advisory. Review update or service logs for errors, confirm relevant services are healthy, and test the affected feature in a controlled manner.
On FortiGate, PSIRT entries are available at Security Fabric > Security Rating > Vulnerabilities. FortiGate administration guidance also explains how to check PSIRT package entitlement in the GUI or CLI. This confirms access to advisory data; it does not prove that the installed firmware contains the fix.

How to patch Zimbra
1. Find the current release notes and security notice
Check Zimbra’s current product-update archive, release notes, and security notice for the installed branch. The archive listed Zimbra 10.1.21 on September 24, 2026; a later release may supersede it. Match the specific vulnerability to the fixed release for your branch rather than assuming the newest listed release is the right target for every installation.
Recent notices illustrate why issue-specific matching matters: Zimbra 10.1.19 addressed a Classic Web Client vulnerability, while 10.1.20 included a permanent fix for a critical SNMP vulnerability. These July 2026 examples are not blanket targets for all Zimbra installations. Zimbra’s July 20, 2026 notice for 10.1.20 said, “We strongly recommend upgrading to this version to keep your environment secure.”

2. Check operating-system and topology requirements
Read the release notes and supported upgrade instructions before applying packages. Confirm that the target release supports the installed operating system and that the procedure fits the deployment’s topology. For multi-node systems, use the documented sequence for those nodes; do not assume that a single-node procedure applies. Zimbra’s May 2025 announcement linked in-place and rolling-upgrade guides for relevant topologies and recommended support for transition assistance. Check the current guides and their applicability before proceeding.
3. Update and verify every applicable node
Apply the update using Zimbra’s supported instructions. Retain installer and update logs. After the update, record the reported release and build on each relevant server and compare each one with the advisory’s fixed release. Confirm services are healthy, test mail flow, and test the affected component or client path.

4. Factor support lifecycle into the decision
If the installation is on an older branch, check Zimbra’s current lifecycle information before treating a historical patch announcement as evidence that the branch still receives fixes. Zimbra’s May 2025 notice gave historical end-of-life and support dates for versions 9.0 and 10.0 and recommended migration toward 10.1 at that time. For a branch that is no longer supported, assess migration as well as any short-term patch; also account for operating-system support limits.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Keep evidence that the vulnerability is fixed
A package download, completed installer, or visible advisory feed is not sufficient proof of remediation. Keep a before-and-after record for the product, version or build, device or node, and timestamp. For each affected system, retain evidence that its installed version meets the exact advisory’s fixed threshold.
- Save relevant version output or administration screenshots.
- Review update logs and confirm the affected services are healthy after restart.
- Test the vulnerable feature or interface in a controlled manner, using checks appropriate to that advisory.
- Recheck the vendor notice for changes to affected branches, fixes, or workarounds.
There is no universal post-patch test that applies to every Fortinet product and Zimbra release. Make the final functional check specific to the affected component and deployment.
Choose the patch by product, branch, and topology
Fortinet and Zimbra are separate patching tasks. For Fortinet, base the decision on the matching PSIRT advisory and recommended upgrade path. For Zimbra, use the current patch announcement, release notes, security notice, and topology-specific upgrade guidance. In either case, the installed branch and build, affected configuration, fixed release, supported route, lifecycle status, and per-device verification evidence determine whether the change is appropriate.
