1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsChoose Shopify apps by starting with a specific store problem, then compare candidates on workflow fit, compatibility, quality signals, merchant feedback, data access, total cost, support, and how you will remove them if they are no longer needed. There is no single best app for every store: the right choice depends on your products, operations, markets, budget, and existing tools.
Start with the job your store needs done
Before browsing the App Store, write down what is missing from Shopify’s built-in features and what outcome an app should deliver. Shopify’s selection guidance frames the decision around three practical questions:
- What does my store need outside of Shopify’s core features?
- What would increase my sales?
- What would make managing my store easier?
Add a spending limit and a way to recognize success. For example, define whether you need to reduce a manual task, support a particular customer workflow, or add a capability not currently available in your setup. Search the App Store by function or browse a relevant category only after you have that brief. Shopify also offers personalized app suggestions based on similarities such as industry, location, and store age; treat them as discovery leads, not proof of fit. Shopify’s app discovery guidance says developers cannot pay to place an app in recommendations.
Compare candidates against the same criteria
Use the same questions for every app that addresses the job. Weight them according to the importance of the workflow, your tolerance for data access, and your budget. There is no universal score or ideal number of apps that fits every store.

| Criterion | What to check |
|---|---|
| Job fit | Does the app perform the workflow you need, or does Shopify already provide the feature? |
| Store fit | Does it work with your store settings, theme, sales channels, and customer markets? |
| Quality and integration | Does it have the Built for Shopify badge, and does its Shopify integration suit the way your team works? |
| Merchant evidence | Do recent written reviews describe a similar use case and support experience? Do developer replies address concerns? |
| Data and privacy | Are the requested view and edit permissions proportionate to the app’s stated purpose? Does its privacy policy explain how relevant personal data is handled? |
| Total cost | What will the app cost at your expected usage, including recurring, one-time, usage-based, and developer-billed charges? |
| Support and exit | Is there a clear way to reach the developer, and do you understand what uninstalling does—and does not—confirm about data deletion? |
Check compatibility before you install
An app can be useful in general but incompatible with a particular store configuration. The App Store marks an app “Not compatible” when store settings do not meet the developer’s installation requirements, and the listing explains the mismatch. Pay particular attention to requirements tied to settings that may be difficult to change, such as business location or shipping countries. Shopify’s app-finding guidance explains compatibility checks.
Confirm that the app supports the store settings and sales channels involved in your actual workflow. A listing’s general feature description is not a substitute for a store-specific compatibility result.
Interpret Built for Shopify as a signal, not a guarantee
The Built for Shopify badge means Shopify says an app has passed testing against its standards for performance, design, and integration. Shopify’s stated performance criterion limits an app’s storefront speed decrease to no more than 10 performance points. Shopify also says it reviews certifications annually and removes the status if an app no longer meets the requirements. See Shopify’s Built for Shopify guidance.
This is Shopify’s certification claim, not independent evidence that an app will perform equally well in every merchant’s store. Use the badge as one quality signal alongside compatibility, reviews, permissions, and the fit of the app’s workflow.

Read reviews for evidence about your use case
Do not make the decision from the star average alone. Shopify says its overall ratings are weighted toward more timely and relevant reviews, and that reviews may be removed or archived over time. Look at recent written feedback for details about the workflow you need, reliability, and customer support. Developer replies can show how the company handles reported issues, but neither reviews nor responses guarantee the same experience for your store. Shopify’s guidance on finding apps describes how ratings and reviews are handled.
Inspect permissions and privacy before authorizing access
The installation screen lists the personal-data access and store-data areas an app wants to view or edit and links to the developer’s privacy policy. Match each requested permission to the app’s stated job. If the connection between a requested scope and the feature is unclear, pause before authorizing and ask the developer to explain it.
Order access deserves particular attention. Shopify distinguishes access to recent orders, limited to the last 60 days, from access to all past and future orders. Shopify says it reviews requests for all-orders access to ensure that access is required. The 60-day period and review process are described in Shopify’s app-permissions guidance and its protected-data access guidance.
Calculate the full cost—not just the advertised starting price
App charges can be recurring, one-time, or based on usage. Many paid apps offer a free basic plan or trial, but that does not establish what the app will cost once the store needs more capacity or the trial ends. Estimate cost at the usage you expect and include any one-time charges.

Some third-party apps bill outside Shopify, so those charges will not appear on the Shopify bill. Include direct developer billing in your estimate. If you pause or deactivate a store, app charges may continue until the apps are uninstalled. Shopify explains billing types and app charges in its app-charge billing guidance.
Install, review, and remove apps carefully
Before installation
- Open the app listing and check its stated features, plan terms, compatibility information, and developer support details.
- On the installation screen, review the requested personal-data access and store-data areas, including whether each permission allows viewing or editing.
- Open the linked developer privacy policy and check how it covers the data relevant to the app’s purpose.
- Compare expected charges, including recurring, one-time, usage-based, and charges billed directly by the developer.
Shopify’s app installation guidance notes that third-party install links work only for apps created before December 5, 2019; apps created later cannot be installed through those links. Use the App Store listing and its installation flow rather than relying on an old third-party install link.
After installation
In Shopify admin, go to Settings > Apps and open the app’s details or About page. Depending on the app, this area can show billing and usage charges, privacy details, permissions, recent activity, compatibility issues, and available extensions, functions, or pixels. Shopify also identifies unused permission scopes when they have not been used in the last 30 days. Use that view to review whether access is still needed. See Shopify’s app monitoring guidance.
When you uninstall
Uninstalling revokes the app’s access to the store. Shopify says that 48 hours after uninstalling, it sends the developer a request to erase customer personal information collected during installation. That request is not confirmation that deletion has been completed: contact the developer directly to confirm that the data was deleted. Shopify explains the process in its app removal guidance.

Build a shortlist without mistaking discovery for endorsement
Search by the function you identified, browse the relevant category, and filter for Built for Shopify apps if that signal matters to your shortlist. Shopify may also show suggestions based on characteristics such as industry, location, and store age. Its recommendation guidance says app developers cannot pay Shopify to have an app appear in recommendations. Whether an app comes from search, a category, or a suggestion, evaluate it using the same job-fit, compatibility, quality, review, permission, cost, and support criteria.
How to choose when two apps look similar
Compare the candidates side by side using the requirements that matter to your store, rather than comparing feature counts in isolation. A practical decision order is:
- Remove apps that cannot support the required workflow or are marked incompatible with your store.
- Compare how directly each app handles the job and how its integration fits your team’s workflow.
- Read recent reviews for the same type of use and examine how developers respond to issues.
- Compare permissions and privacy explanations, especially access to customer or order data.
- Calculate total cost at expected usage, including charges outside Shopify billing.
- Choose the candidate whose benefits justify its cost and access, with a clear support contact and a known removal process.
