A fast internet plan does not guarantee fast Wi-Fi in every room. First compare an Ethernet connection with Wi-Fi, then compare Wi-Fi beside the ISP gateway with Wi-Fi in the room where it feels slow. Those checks show whether to focus on the ISP connection, the gateway’s wired path, or wireless coverage.
1. Find out what is slow
Before changing settings or buying equipment, note whether the problem affects one device or all devices, one room or the whole home, and whether it happens constantly or intermittently. Run a speed test under consistent conditions. A single slow test far from the gateway does not identify the cause.
For a useful comparison, test one device over Ethernet and another over Wi-Fi, using the same speed-test service around the same time. Then test Wi-Fi close to the gateway with few obstacles and again in the affected room. Client capability, frequency band, distance, walls, and nearby wireless traffic can all affect the result, as Google explains in its slow-internet troubleshooting guidance.
| What you find | Likely next step |
|---|---|
| Ethernet and Wi-Fi are both slow | Check the service, plan, modem, gateway, and cables; contact the ISP if the wired result remains below expectations. |
| Ethernet is good; Wi-Fi is slow even beside the gateway | Investigate the device, band, gateway settings, and wireless interference. |
| Wi-Fi is good beside the gateway but poor in particular rooms | Focus on gateway placement and coverage; consider an access point or mesh only after checking compatibility. |
2. Check the ISP connection and wired path
If wired service is slow too, adding Wi-Fi coverage is unlikely to fix the underlying limit. Check for local service notices, confirm your plan, and ask the ISP to verify service and provisioning if the problem continues.

If your setup permits it, you can compare a computer connected by Ethernet directly to the ISP modem with the same computer connected through the router. Follow the ISP’s instructions: modem and gateway configurations differ, and equipment may need to be reconnected in a particular order. TP-Link recommends a direct-to-modem test to determine whether slow speed persists upstream of its router (TP-Link’s slow-internet guide).
For a slowdown affecting both wired and wireless devices, check the Ethernet cable between modem and router. Try a known-good cable if the existing one may be damaged or unreliable. TP-Link recommends Cat6 or better for that connection; this is its guidance, not proof that every older cable is faulty. A cable swap will not fix a weak Wi-Fi signal or an ISP outage.

Restart modem and router in order
- Restart the modem first.
- Wait two to three minutes for it to reconnect.
- Restart the router after the modem is back online, then retest.
This sequence follows TP-Link’s advice for its equipment; your ISP gateway may combine modem and router functions, so use the provider’s instructions for your exact setup.
3. Improve Wi-Fi where it is slow
If Ethernet performs well, test wireless close to the gateway and in the problem room. A major drop between those locations points toward coverage, obstacles, or interference rather than a slow internet plan.

- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
Reposition the gateway
Where cabling and ISP rules allow, place the gateway in a central, elevated, open location. Avoid enclosing it in a cabinet or putting large obstacles between it and the areas where you use Wi-Fi. Nearby networks and household electronics can also contribute to interference. TP-Link’s router-placement guidance discusses placement for signal quality.
Compare available Wi-Fi bands
If the gateway and device offer more than one band, compare them in the same location. A 2.4 GHz connection may not deliver the same speed as 5 GHz, while walls and distance can affect the higher-frequency link. The device must support the band, and results depend on the home and surrounding wireless traffic. Do not assume that one band is always best throughout the house.

Change settings only for your gateway
Channel and channel-width options, QoS, parental controls, and firmware controls vary by ISP, make, and model. Use the instructions for your exact gateway rather than following a menu path intended for another router. TP-Link’s troubleshooting guide suggests channel or channel-width adjustments and, on supported TP-Link equipment, temporarily disabling QoS or parental controls as checks. Treat those as model-specific tests, not universal fixes.
Change one setting at a time, record its original value, and restore it if performance does not improve. Install firmware only from your ISP or the device maker for the exact model.

4. Decide whether an access point or mesh system makes sense
Consider additional coverage equipment only when Wi-Fi is satisfactory near the gateway but poor in specific rooms. Reposition the existing gateway first. If the gap remains, compare a compatible access point or mesh system based on where coverage is needed, whether it works with the ISP gateway’s functions, and whether a wired backhaul is practical. Google’s guidance covers mesh-point placement and Wi-Fi performance.
A mesh system or access point can improve coverage; it cannot increase the bandwidth delivered by an underperforming ISP connection. If the wired test is poor, contact the ISP rather than treating a coverage upgrade as the fix.
