A 10Gbps link indication confirms that the devices negotiated a link; it does not guarantee that a speed test, file copy, or application can move data at that rate. First separate the kind of test you ran, then benchmark the local network independently of storage and file-sharing software. That tells you whether to investigate the network path, the hosts, or the workload.
First identify what is slow
Different tests measure different parts of the system. Record the test, its units, the direction of traffic, and the endpoint pair before changing settings.
- Link rate: The rate reported by a NIC or switch describes the negotiated connection, not application payload throughput.
- LAN throughput test: A test between two local computers helps isolate the network path and host interfaces.
- WAN speed test: This also depends on your internet service, the route to the test server, and that server’s capacity; it is not a direct measure of local 10GbE performance.
- File copy: This includes the network, source and destination storage, CPU, and file-sharing software. A slow copy alone does not show that Ethernet is the bottleneck.
Establish a repeatable LAN baseline
Use a throughput tool such as iperf or Microsoft NTttcp between two 10GbE-capable endpoints. Intel recommends testing directly between interfaces and using a switch capable of full line rate without blocking. Follow Intel’s [direct throughput testing guidance](https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/articles/000005 ಟ). Compare the result with your actual workload rather than treating the link indication as a benchmark.
For a useful comparison, keep the same endpoint pair, switch path, direction, duration, and test configuration. Record the result and CPU load. If available, test in both directions and swap endpoints; a limitation that follows one host points toward that system rather than a general network-path issue.

Test settings can affect results. A single TCP stream, a brief run, storage limits, or a constrained host interface are possibilities to investigate, not universal explanations. Change one test parameter at a time and compare repeat runs; secondary iperf3 guidance discusses these factors at ServeTheHome’s iperf3 tutorial.
Check both hosts and their NIC capacity
Each endpoint must be able to feed or consume the traffic. Check the NIC model and capability, driver, CPU load, and the interface through which an add-in adapter connects. For a PCIe card, verify the slot’s actual generation and electrical lane count: a physically long slot may be wired for fewer lanes than its size suggests. Intel’s Ethernet throughput troubleshooting guidance recommends checking host and interface capacity as part of diagnosis.
If possible, test with another capable host or adapter. If performance changes when one endpoint is replaced or swapped, focus on that endpoint’s adapter, bus, driver, or CPU rather than immediately replacing the switch or cabling.

Verify link settings and the physical path
Check negotiated speed and duplex at both ends, then compare the NIC and switch-port configuration. Confirm that the cable or optical components are supported by both devices and appropriate for the intended rate and link length. Do not force a speed setting as a general fix; first establish what each endpoint and switch support.
A Broadcom support case documents a specific ESXi/Broadcom NIC and Cisco Nexus setup in which transmit traffic was capped at 1Gbps even though the link showed 10Gbps. The case discusses matching a manually fixed switch speed and checking firmware and physical-layer integrity. This illustrates why link status alone is not conclusive; it is not a universal instruction to force speed. See the Broadcom case details.
Inspect switch and NIC counters or logs for increasing CRC, symbol, or FCS errors. Cisco’s troubleshooting procedure treats stable error counters as the expected condition and advises validating physical connectivity and optics; see Cisco’s Ethernet interface troubleshooting guide. Check MTU compatibility and packet loss
Start with an MTU supported by the endpoints and every relevant part of the switching path. If you use jumbo frames, verify that the chosen frame size is supported end to end; they are not a prerequisite for useful 10GbE throughput. Avoid changing the MTU on only one computer and assuming the rest of the path will adapt.
A mismatched or unsupported MTU can cause packet loss. NVIDIA’s WinOF-2 v24.10 documentation warns that packets may be lost when the port MTU exceeds the switch’s maximum; consult the MTU configuration guidance for that driver and version. Check for loss before treating a frame-size change as a performance tweak.

If the benchmark is fast but file copies are slow
A healthy network-only test shifts attention to the rest of the file-transfer path. Measure the source and destination storage independently, and observe CPU use and the file-sharing application during a copy. Compare more than one file or workload if practical. The network benchmark does not measure the complete SMB, NFS, or other file-copy path, and there is no single storage threshold that guarantees a particular copy speed across systems.
If the LAN benchmark itself is also slow, continue with host capacity, link configuration, physical-layer errors, and packet loss before tuning file-sharing settings. This keeps changes focused on the component implicated by the measurements.
Quick Recap
Use the result to choose the next check
| Observation | Next check |
|---|---|
| Only a WAN speed test is slow | Compare with a local host-to-host test; the WAN result includes the internet connection and test server. |
| LAN throughput is low in both directions | Check both hosts’ NIC, CPU, drivers, PCIe wiring, switch capability, physical counters, and packet loss. |
| One direction is much slower | Compare transmit and receive settings, errors, and behavior on each endpoint; use a host swap to see whether the limitation follows a machine. |
| LAN throughput is healthy but file copies are slow | Measure storage and observe CPU and file-sharing behavior on both ends. |
| Errors increase during testing | Investigate the cable, optics or modules, fiber patching, and physical link before changing application settings. |
