You can build a LEGO Technic model that demonstrates hit-and-miss operation, but the documented community design is a vacuum engine—not a fuel-burning engine—and its forum post does not include a complete parts list or step-by-step instructions. It describes a governor that disengages the intake cam as the model speeds up, then restores it as the model slows. For a reproducible build, use the related pneumatic-engine plans below to learn the components and mechanisms, but do not treat them as instructions for that specific hit-and-miss model.
What “hit-and-miss” means in a LEGO model
In a conventional hit-and-miss combustion engine, a governor regulates speed by varying how many working cycles occur over time. When the engine exceeds its set speed, it skips cycles; as speed falls, firing resumes. A historical technical handbook describes a common arrangement in which the inlet valve is held closed and the exhaust valve open during missed cycles, with a pendulum or centrifugal governor controlling the valves. Technical handbook explanation of hit-and-miss governing
The LEGO example is different in what it demonstrates: its creator calls it a “Hit-And-Miss Vacuum Engine.” It uses a valve cam and a special governor to imitate intermittent operation; it does not burn fuel or reproduce combustion. The creator describes the governor pulling the intake cam away above a set speed, letting the model coast, and returning the cam as the speed drops. That is the arrangement of this model, not a universal description of historical hit-and-miss engines. LegoLord1880’s Eurobricks build post
What the documented LEGO design does
The builder says the model began as a single side-valve engine, then gained a cam on the valve and a governor. A 1×4 panel on the valve blocks a vacuum hose while still allowing the cylinder to breathe freely. In the builder’s words: “When the engine speeds beyond a set RPM, the governor pulls away the intake cam and the engine coasts until the governor closes again.” Eurobricks post, January 12, 2025

- An introduction to engineering – LEGO Technic buildable model sets feature realistic movement and mechanisms that introduce young LEGO builders to the universe of engineering
The builder also reports that, under no load, it fires about once every five to six rotations, while under a slight load it can fire every rotation like a normal two-stroke vacuum engine. Those are the builder’s own observations, not independently measured specifications. Eurobricks post, January 12, 2025
Why the forum post is not a complete build guide
The post describes the operating idea and links to an image, but it does not provide a full parts inventory, assembly sequence, air requirements, or troubleshooting procedure. That means it is not enough to reproduce the hit-and-miss model reliably from written instructions alone. Do not infer a precise bill of materials or a working recipe from adjacent pneumatic-engine projects: their layouts and requirements differ. Eurobricks build post

Use related pneumatic builds to learn the supporting mechanisms
Free single-cylinder pneumatic engine
Nico71’s single-cylinder pneumatic engine has free instructions and is described as using unmodified LEGO pneumatic parts. The creator warns that function depends on the condition of the pneumatic components, recommends a smooth switch and cylinder, and notes that the engine rotates in one direction only. It is a useful adjacent build for understanding pneumatic engine behavior, but it is not the hit-and-miss design. Nico71 single-cylinder pneumatic engine
Switchless pneumatic engine
Nico71’s separate switchless engine page describes a double-acting cylinder, hose loops serving as custom intake and exhaust valves, sliding pushers and a rod mechanism, plus a geared inertia wheel. The creator’s PDF instructions include a parts list. The model requires a constant-flow air supply; the page suggests LEGO pumps or compressors and other pump options. Its pressure and hose details apply to this switchless model and should not be assumed to fit the forum hit-and-miss design. Nico71 switchless pneumatic engine

Larger switchless pneumatic machine
A larger switchless machine from the same creator uses a single pneumatic cylinder and hose-loop valves, adding adjustable timing, throttle and idle mechanisms. The creator reports 160 RPM for the engine at 4 bar and an 800 RPM flywheel through its gearing; the page does not state a test protocol, and these are creator-reported figures for this machine, not expectations for a hit-and-miss model. The creator also notes that hose flexibility matters and discusses hose lengths and materials for this design. Nico71 switchless pneumatic machine

- If you want to reproduce the exact hit-and-miss model: the cited forum post does not contain enough build detail to follow as a complete set of instructions. Treat it as a mechanism description, not a ready-to-build plan.
- If you want to learn pneumatic engine basics: start with the free single-cylinder instructions, then compare the switchless design’s cylinder, hose-loop valves, linkage and flywheel.
- If you want to study the supporting mechanisms: LEGO Education’s Machines & Mechanisms page provides separate instructions for a cam, gears, a flywheeler and a pneumatic compressor, along with pneumatic models. It does not provide a hit-and-miss engine plan. LEGO Education Machines & Mechanisms
For any pneumatic build, the exact parts and air source depend on that design’s instructions. The documented adjacent builds show why functioning cylinders and other pneumatic components matter; they do not establish compatibility with the forum model or identify a complete hit-and-miss parts kit.
