Place your Wi-Fi router in an open, elevated spot as close to the middle of your home as practical—and nearer the rooms where you need a reliable connection. Keep it out of cabinets and away from major obstructions and likely sources of interference. Then check Wi-Fi in the rooms you use; no single position guarantees strong coverage everywhere.

Where should you place your Wi-Fi router?

Start with a location that is central to the rooms that matter, raised off the floor, and exposed to open air. Ofcom advises placing a router centrally and off the floor because Wi-Fi travels in all directions; a router at one edge of the home may send more of its signal outside, while a floor-level position can send more into the ground. The exact geometric center is not essential if another open location serves your priority rooms better. Ofcom’s guidance on improving your Wi-Fi experience explains the general placement principles.

A shelf or table can provide useful height. Avoid hiding the router inside a cabinet, behind furniture, in a corner, or directly on the floor. TP-Link offers similar placement advice, but these are general recommendations—not a promise of a particular speed or coverage improvement in every home. TP-Link’s router placement guidance gives its recommendations.

What can weaken Wi-Fi between the router and a room?

Walls, floors, furnishings, and other objects can weaken a wireless signal, and some materials block more of it than others. Ofcom specifically identifies water, metal, and glass; its examples include radiators and fish tanks. Dense or structural walls and floors can also make it harder for a signal to reach rooms on another side or level. Ofcom puts it plainly: “Wifi signals weaken as they pass through objects and some materials block the signal more than others.”

TP-Link AX1800 WiFi 6 Router (Archer AX21 V5)
  • DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
  • AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.

When choosing between two possible router locations, consider what lies along the path to the rooms you use—not just how close the router is on a floor plan. A spot that is nearer to a bedroom but separated by a substantial wall may work less well than a slightly more distant, open location. Homes with multiple floors may need testing on each level because one position may not serve them equally.

Which locations and nearby devices should you avoid?

Keep the router away from large obstructions and electrical devices that could interfere with Wi-Fi. Ofcom names microwave ovens, baby monitors, fairy lights, and cordless phones as examples. A crowded or unusual environment can make a practical location different from the apparent center of the home.

TP-Link AC1200 WiFi Router Dual Band Wireless Internet Router (Archer A54)
  • Dual-band Wi-Fi with 5 GHz speeds up to 867 Mbps and 2.4 GHz speeds up to 300 Mbps, delivering 1200 Mbps of total bandwidth¹. Dual-band routers do not support 6 GHz. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • Covers up to 1,000 sq. ft. with four external antennas for stable wireless connections and optimal coverage.
  • Supports IGMP Proxy/Snooping, Bridge and Tag VLAN to optimize IPTV streaming
  • Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
  • Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks
  • Avoid enclosed spaces: do not put the router inside a closed cabinet or hide it behind furniture.
  • Avoid floor-level and corner placement: choose an elevated, open surface when possible.
  • Give it space from likely obstacles and interference sources: avoid placing it right beside large metal objects, a microwave, or cordless devices.

How to find the best spot in your home

  1. Identify priority rooms. List the places where people work, stream, make calls, or otherwise rely on Wi-Fi.
  2. Choose a practical open location nearer the middle of the home. If possible, move the router closer to those rooms than its current position, while accounting for walls and floors in between.
  3. Raise it onto a shelf or table. Keep the router unobstructed rather than enclosing it or placing it behind furniture.
  4. Move it away from likely interference sources. In particular, avoid placing it immediately beside a microwave or cordless devices.
  5. Check the connection where it is used. Walk through the priority rooms and test the devices and activities that matter to you. If the home has multiple floors, check each one.

There is no universal pass/fail signal threshold or guaranteed speed gain for a router move. Building materials, layout, nearby networks, router design, and client devices all affect results. Judge the change by how Wi-Fi works in the rooms you actually use.

What if moving the router does not fix weak coverage?

First consider whether the problem is concentrated in one area or spread across several rooms or floors. A range extender may be worth considering for a limited weak spot; a mesh Wi-Fi system uses additional nodes around the home and may suit dead zones spread across a broader area. Neither option guarantees better results in every home, and additional equipment needs appropriate placement and a usable connection to the existing network.

Option May suit Trade-off
Move the existing router The router is at an edge of the home, low down, enclosed, or close to an obstruction. Often costs nothing, but the broadband entry point and wiring may limit where it can go.
Range extender One limited area has weak coverage. Adds another device; results depend on the existing signal and the home layout.
Mesh Wi-Fi system Dead zones affect multiple rooms or floors. Adds nodes and cost, and the nodes themselves need suitable placement.
Wi-Fi installation or wired access point The router cannot be moved or a wired access point is being considered. Availability and cost depend on local services and the home; installation requires planning or a quote.

Ofcom describes mesh networks as a way to place additional points around a home, and NETGEAR lists placement, home layout, interference, extenders, and mesh among considerations for weak range. Neither source establishes a universal measured comparison or guarantees that an extender or mesh will outperform the other in a particular home. NETGEAR’s support guidance for poor wireless range or a weak WiFi signal discusses possible causes and remedies.

If you are considering changing antenna angles, follow the guidance for your specific router rather than assuming one arrangement works for all models. TP-Link’s antenna advice is vendor-specific and should not be treated as a universal standard. TP-Link’s placement article and TP-Link’s router antenna guidance provide its recommendations.
