Newark did not switch to the element14 name everywhere on a single day. The transition unfolded in stages: Premier Farnell later dated the Newark element14 and Farnell element14 business rebrands to 2008; element14 launched as an engineering community in June 2009; Asia Pacific’s transition began in 2010; and industry coverage reported Newark’s North American operational rebrand in May 2011. Newark returned to its familiar name with an Avnet endorsement on March 1, 2019.
Why accounts give different dates for Newark becoming element14
The dates refer to different parts and stages of the change—not necessarily conflicting versions of one rename. One date is the parent company’s retrospective account of business branding; another marks the launch of an online engineering community; later dates describe regional and operational adoption. The available accounts do not establish the exact switch date for every territory.
| Date | What it marks | Scope |
|---|---|---|
| 2008 | Newark and Farnell were rebranded as Newark element14 and Farnell element14, according to the company’s 2019 retrospective announcement. | Business-brand milestone |
| June 1, 2009 | Newark announced element14 as an online technology resource and community for design engineers. | Community launch, not proof that Newark’s distribution operation stopped using its name |
| 2010 | A letter from the CEO says the transition to element14 began in Asia Pacific. | Regional transition |
| May 2011 | EE Times reported that Newark officially rebranded itself as element14. | Reported North American operational rebrand |
| March 1, 2019 | Newark element14 became Newark, An Avnet Company. | Visible brand change following Avnet’s acquisition of Premier Farnell |
The company’s 2019 announcement is the source for the 2008 and 2019 business-brand dates; the launch release establishes what began in 2009; the CEO letter describes Asia Pacific; and the 2011 date comes from industry reporting. Read together, they describe a staged transition rather than one universal rename date.
What Newark and element14 each referred to
Newark: the distributor
Established in the 1930s, Newark was a North American distributor of electronic components and test equipment. It became part of Premier Farnell following the combined company’s formation in 1996. Newark’s 2009 launch announcement described a then-current selection from more than 440 manufacturers and same-day shipping; those are dated company claims, not current inventory or delivery guarantees.

element14: an engineering resource and community
When Newark announced element14 on June 1, 2009, it presented the service as an online technology resource and community for electronic design engineers. The described offering included product data, design tools, technical information, discussion and collaboration. User participation and knowledge-sharing were central to the community’s identity.
Kevin Yapp, Premier Farnell’s chief innovation officer, described it as “a very much needed one-stop resource for electronic design engineers.” The company reported more than 600,000 community members in its 2019 brand announcement; that is a company-reported figure for 2019, not a current or independently audited membership count.

Why Premier Farnell brought the names together
Premier Farnell intended element14 to become a shared name for its electronics distribution businesses and its global engineering community. In a CEO letter about the transition, the company said local service would continue during the change. Using one identity connected the distribution business with the engineering resource, although adoption did not happen everywhere at once.
In 2016, Avnet acquired Premier Farnell. By 2019, Avnet said bringing the businesses closer to its brand would give customers and suppliers a more cohesive proposition and make clearer that Newark and Farnell were part of Avnet. At the same time, the company recognized that customers had known the Newark and Farnell names for decades.

What changed in 2019—and what did not
Effective March 1, 2019, Newark element14 became Newark, An Avnet Company, while Farnell element14 became Farnell, An Avnet Company. The change restored Newark and Farnell as the prominent business names while retaining an explicit connection to Avnet. It was a visible brand adjustment; the announcement did not describe Newark as a newly created distributor.
So, “What happened to Newark Electronics?” Newark’s distribution business continued under a series of branding changes: Newark, Newark element14, and then Newark, An Avnet Company. element14 also had a distinct identity as an engineering community, launched in 2009. The shared branding linked those roles, but the community launch and the distributor’s regional rebrand were separate milestones.
