There is no demonstrated PS5 Pro test in the available reporting. The reported Linux-and-RPCS3 experiment ran on a base PlayStation 5: Ridge Racer 7 reached 4K at 60fps, but performance varied sharply by game. That result does not establish PS5 Pro support or mean PS3 games generally run at 4K/60fps.
What the PS5 test actually demonstrated
Coverage of Digital Foundry’s experiment describes a base PS5 running Linux and the RPCS3 PlayStation 3 emulator—not a PS5 Pro. The test shows that some PS3 games can run on this unofficial setup, but the reported results differ by title and include frame pacing problems, low frame rates, and compromises such as disabling an effect. Digital Citizen’s May 25, 2026 account and Push Square’s May 24, 2026 coverage summarize the game-specific observations.

Here is how the reported results compare:
| Game | Reported result | What to make of it |
|---|---|---|
| Ridge Racer 7 | 4K at 60fps; minimal stuttering in Notebookcheck’s account | The strongest result, but it applies to this game, not the PS3 library as a whole. |
| Resistance: Fall of Man | 4K output, generally around 30fps | Frame pacing issues were reported, so resolution alone does not indicate smooth performance. |
| Heavenly Sword | Near 30fps at 5120×2880 (2880p) | A very high output resolution did not produce 60fps. |
| Grand Theft Auto IV | Around 17fps at 720p in TweakTown’s account | A reported example of poor performance despite reducing resolution. |
| Metal Gear Solid 4 | Reported to struggle | Coverage attributed the difficulty to CPU emulation demands. |
| Killzone 3 | Around 4K/30fps, with drops in some scenes | Reported results improved after disabling MLAA through RPCS3 patches. |
| MotorStorm: Pacific Rift | 4K/30fps | Another game-specific result below 60fps. |
These are reported observations of Digital Foundry’s tests, not a guarantee for every console, firmware version, RPCS3 build, or game. The coverage does not establish a comparable PS5 Pro result. Additional reporting appears in Notebookcheck and TweakTown.
Why one game can reach 60fps while another struggles
RPCS3 has to emulate the PS3’s Cell processor, including work handled by its Synergistic Processing Units (SPUs). Games place different demands on that hardware. Where a game depends heavily on work that is difficult to reproduce on the PS5’s CPU, the emulator can hit a CPU-side bottleneck even if the GPU can render a high-resolution image.

#1 Best Overall
- Ray Tracing - Immerse yourself in worlds with a new level of realism as rays of light are individually simulated, creating true-to-life shadows and reflections in supported PS5 games.
- Faster Loading - Fast-travel across the map and get back into the game almost instantly with the PlayStation 5 console’s ultra-high-speed SSD and fast load times.
- Stunning Visuals - Experience the vast world in stunning 4K and HDR at 120 FPS (with a 4K and HDR compatible TV or display)
- Breathtaking Immersion - Discover a deeper gaming experience with support for haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, and 3D Audio technology.
- Backwards Compatibility - Play over 4,000 PS4 games on PS5. Enjoy faster and smoother frame rates in some of the PS4 console's greatest games.
That is why 4K output is not a reliable measure of playability. A game can produce a high-resolution picture and still run at about 30fps, suffer uneven frame pacing, or perform poorly at a lower resolution. In the reported tests, disabling MLAA helped Killzone 3, but it did not turn the results into a general performance guarantee.
How the Linux and RPCS3 setup worked
The reported arrangement used Linux installed on an SSD in the PS5’s M.2 slot, with RPCS3 running as a native Linux application and using the RADV driver. Digital Citizen’s account says the setup did not rely on Proton translation. The SSD describes the reported configuration; it is not evidence that any particular drive enables a jailbreak or improves emulation performance.
Running Linux required exploiting the console rather than changing a normal PS5 setting. Tom’s Hardware reported on April 29, 2026, that the public ps5-linux toolchain supported original PS5 “Phat” consoles on firmware 3.00 through 4.51, with a separate umtx2 exploit needed for initial code execution. The report described possible reduced-performance limitations on firmware 5.xx and said firmware 6.xx or later was ruled out for that project at publication. Those are dated project-support details, not a permanent compatibility promise—and they do not show PS5 Pro support. See Tom’s Hardware’s project and firmware report.

- Includes DualSense Wireless Controller, 1TB SSD, 2 Horizontal Stand Feet, HDMI Cable, AC power cord, USB cable, printed materials, ASTRO’s PLAYROOM (Pre-installed game)

The project was described as a soft mod: the exploit must be run again to boot Linux, while a standard reboot returns the console to normal PS5 operation. The process can require local tools and display troubleshooting. It is an enthusiast experiment outside Sony’s normal system software, not an official PS3 backward-compatibility feature.
What this means if you own a PS5 Pro
The reports establish a base-PS5 Linux/RPCS3 experiment, not a successful PS5 Pro setup. They neither demonstrate that the Pro can run the same configuration nor prove that doing so is impossible. If your question is whether you can count on the PS5 Pro to play PS3 games at 4K/60fps, the evidence does not support that expectation: even the base-PS5 reports show sharply different outcomes from game to game.
