Disable only startup apps you recognize and do not need immediately after signing in. In Windows 10 and 11, review Task Manager > Startup apps, use the Startup impact label as a clue, and consider whether you rely on the app for syncing or notifications. There is no universal safe list of app names, and Microsoft cautions that older PCs with outdated hardware may not see significant improvements from performance steps.

Which startup apps should you disable?

Start with enabled apps you recognize that do not need to open automatically when you sign in. An app may still work when opened manually; disabling its startup entry changes whether it launches automatically, not whether it is installed.

Before switching an entry off, consider what it does in the background. For example, you may want an app to start on its own if you depend on its syncing or notifications. Microsoft describes background apps as potentially providing features such as syncing and notifications, so weigh those benefits against reducing background activity: Windows background apps and your privacy.

Do not disable an unfamiliar entry just because its name is unclear or its impact is high. Identify the app or publisher first. Microsoft recommends disabling apps you do not need to start automatically, but does not provide a universal list of names that are safe for every PC: Tips to improve PC performance in Windows.

How to review and disable startup apps

  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
  2. Select Startup apps and review the enabled entries, including each app’s name and Startup impact.
  3. Select an app you recognize and do not need at sign-in, then choose Disable. Begin with one or a few low-risk entries so you can tell what changed.
  4. Restart the PC and check whether startup or sign-in feels better, and whether any feature you rely on has stopped working. If necessary, return to Startup apps, select the entry, and choose Enable.

You can also go to Start > Settings > Apps > Startup and switch an app off. Task Manager provides a more detailed view of startup impact. Microsoft documents both routes for Windows 10 and Windows 11: Configure Startup applications in Windows.

What Task Manager’s Startup impact labels mean

Impact is based on the app’s CPU and disk activity during startup, not a promise of how much faster your particular PC will feel. Microsoft defines the categories as follows:

Label Microsoft’s definition
None The startup app is disabled.
Not measured The app is enabled, but there is no measurement data.
Low impact Total CPU usage is under 300 milliseconds and total disk usage is under 292 kilobytes.
Medium impact Total CPU usage is under one second but above 300 milliseconds, or total disk usage is under 3 megabytes but above 292 kilobytes.
High impact Total CPU usage exceeds one second or disk usage exceeds 3 megabytes.

These are Microsoft’s startup-impact criteria; its documentation does not say that a given label guarantees a specific end-user speed improvement. Use the label alongside whether you need the app to launch and whether its background features are useful. Definitions: Microsoft Support.

What if an app is missing from the Startup apps list?

Some apps can be managed through the Startup folders in File Explorer rather than the standard startup list. Microsoft also documents registry Run locations, but warns that modifying the registry can have unintended consequences and recommends backing it up before making changes. For ordinary startup cleanup, use Settings or Task Manager first; registry editing is not a routine speed-up step. See Microsoft’s startup-app instructions.

When a clean boot is useful

A clean boot is a diagnostic method for troubleshooting problems, not a routine way to speed up a PC. Microsoft’s procedure includes hiding Microsoft services before disabling other services, then disabling enabled startup items in Task Manager. Keep a record of what you change: some functionality may be temporarily unavailable, and you may need to restore normal startup by enabling services and re-enabling the startup programs you previously disabled. Follow Microsoft’s clean boot instructions rather than treating a clean boot as permanent cleanup.

What disabling startup apps can—and cannot—fix on an older PC

Startup apps are one possible contributor to slow performance. Microsoft also names limited storage, outdated software, and hardware that no longer meets current needs among potential causes. Its guidance covers Windows 10 and Windows 11 and specifically cautions: “Older PCs with outdated hardware may not see significant improvements from these steps.” There is no established average speed gain for disabling startup apps on older PCs, so judge the effect on your own device rather than expecting a particular result.
