Digitizing a DVD or Blu-ray involves reading the disc with a compatible optical drive, saving or converting its video, then checking the result on the devices you plan to use. HandBrake can convert supported video files, but it does not bypass copy protection; whether you may make a copy or circumvent an access control depends on the law where you live and the details of your use.
What you need to digitize a disc
- A computer and compatible optical drive: The drive must read the format on the disc. For Blu-ray collections, use a Blu-ray-capable drive and check whether the specific model also supports DVDs.
- Software for the job: Disc reading and video transcoding are different tasks. HandBrake converts video it can open; it is not a universal disc-copying or decryption tool.
- Storage space: Keep the resulting files on the computer or an external HDD or SSD. How much space you need depends on the number of discs and whether you retain source copies as well as converted files.
If your computer has no suitable drive, an external USB optical drive is an option. Check that an external Blu-ray drive supports the formats in your collection, as well as your computer’s operating system and connection needs.
Choose whether to keep a source copy or make a smaller file
First decide whether you want a file for archiving or one intended for convenient everyday playback. HandBrake can output MP4, MKV, or WebM and can reduce file size, but it always converts video rather than passing it through unchanged. Conversion settings affect the resulting size and quality; there is no single setting established here as best for every disc, device, or viewer.

HandBrake’s documentation names MakeMKV as an application that can create DVD or Blu-ray disc copies HandBrake can open. That describes a technical relationship between applications, not a guarantee that a particular disc can be copied or that copying it is lawful.

Follow the workflow in separate stages
- Check the disc and drive. Identify whether the disc is a DVD or Blu-ray and confirm the optical drive supports that format. A drive that reads DVDs is not necessarily a Blu-ray drive.
- Read the disc using software that supports it. HandBrake says many commercial DVDs and Blu-rays are protected and that it does not defeat or circumvent copy protection. Its documentation describes MakeMKV as one way to create a disc copy that HandBrake can open; this may not work for every disc and does not settle whether the copying is permitted.
- Decide whether to convert. If you have a supported input file and want a smaller or differently compatible output, open it in HandBrake and choose MP4, MKV, or WebM. If you want video passed through without conversion, HandBrake is not the right tool for that step.
- Check the output. Play the file and verify that it is the intended title, that the audio language and subtitles are right, and that chapters and playback work as you expect on the target device. These checks matter because disc contents and device support vary.
- Store and organize the files. Use the computer’s storage or an external HDD or SSD if needed. Choose capacity based on your collection and whether you keep source copies alongside converted files; there is no universal storage estimate.
What HandBrake can and cannot do
HandBrake is a video transcoder: it converts supported video to formats including MP4, MKV, and WebM, and can reduce file size. It is not a tool for defeating disc copy protection. The HandBrake Team states, “HandBrake also does not defeat or circumvent copy protection of any kind.” Its documentation also cautions: “Do not use HandBrake or any other application to copy materials you do not own or have the right to copy.”
Owning a disc does not, by itself, establish that you have permission to bypass its access controls or make a digital copy. Software that can read or convert a file does not determine whether a particular use is lawful.

Understand the legal limits where you live
Copyright and anti-circumvention rules vary by jurisdiction. In the United States, the Copyright Office’s 37 CFR § 201.40 sets out conditional exemptions for specified classes of works and uses. Among them are narrowly described cases involving short portions of lawfully made and acquired DVD or Blu-ray motion pictures for particular criticism, comment, or educational purposes, subject to conditions. Separate provisions address defined accessibility work and preservation by eligible libraries, archives, or museums. These are not a general personal-viewing exemption, and buying a disc does not automatically authorize circumvention.
The U.S. Copyright Office’s Copyright Law of the United States page says its Title 17 publication incorporates amendments enacted through December 18, 2025. If you are outside the United States, check the law that applies in your location. For a question about your specific circumstances, seek qualified legal advice.
