The report does not document a blackmail case tied to a named game, but it is a reminder to keep conversations open and act promptly if a child is threatened.
What the warning says—and what it does not
In a 1 September 2026 report, Muscat Daily quoted Dr Hussain bin Ali Al Senani, Assistant Public Prosecutor, warning that offenders can use online games and social media to approach children and groom them. The report mentions serious abuse in some cases, but gives no case details, platform names, or figures on how often this happens.
Grooming and blackmail are not the same thing. The report describes a risk of contact and gradual luring; it does not establish that a particular game was used in a documented blackmail scheme. The practical lesson is to take a child’s online interactions seriously without treating every stranger or gaming conversation as dangerous.
How parents can reduce the risk
Ask about the child’s online world
Ask which games your child plays, who they talk to, and whether they use voice chat, messaging, or other social features. Make it routine to talk about online interactions, rather than waiting for a problem to appear.

Agree on simple safety rules
- Do not share personal information with people met online.
- Do not respond to requests from strangers that feel intrusive or uncomfortable.
- Tell a trusted adult if someone asks to move a conversation elsewhere, requests private material, or makes a threat.
Al Senani’s guidance, as quoted by Muscat Daily, is: “Parents should monitor their children’s Internet use, understand the nature of their online interactions and teach them not to share personal information or respond to requests from strangers.”
Use supervision to support trust
Monitoring should go alongside a calm, open relationship. Make clear that a child can bring you an uncomfortable message or mistake without being blamed or having their device immediately taken away. Parental controls can be an additional support, but they do not replace conversation and attention to a child’s interactions.

What to do if someone threatens or blackmails your child
A separate 17 September 2026 report describes ROP guidance on electronic extortion. It advises people not to give in to demands, to preserve relevant evidence, and to report threats. The report discusses electronic extortion generally; it does not say the methods it describes are specific to online games.
- Listen without blame. Reassure your child that telling you was the right thing to do. Avoid shaming them or making them feel responsible for the offender’s actions.
- Do not comply with demands. Do not pay, send photographs or videos, or take other actions requested by the blackmailer.
- Preserve what is available. Keep screenshots, messages, threats, usernames or account details, and other relevant evidence. Avoid deleting the conversation before it can be documented.
- Report the threat to ROP. The ROP contact page lists 80077444 for “Report Cyber Extortion (Blackmail).” Verify the number on the official page because contact details can change.
The same ROP page lists 9999 separately as the Police Operations Center emergency number. It is not the cyber-extortion reporting line.

What is known about the scale of the risk
The cited reports do not provide a prevalence figure for blackmail through online games, a count of affected children, or a trend over time. A 17 September 2026 report describes possible electronic-extortion tactics such as fake accounts, malicious links, hacking, and demands for money or images, but these are general methods and should not be assumed to describe gaming incidents.
