Laurent Bosson’s career, as recounted in his company biography, began in production work and moved through skilled trades and evening university before reaching engineering and executive management. His later work spanned semiconductor manufacturing operations, research alliances and a solar-fab conversion project in Sicily.

How did Laurent Bosson move from factory work into management?

LB Consulting’s biography says Bosson started as a production worker, progressed through skilled trades while attending university in the evenings, and then moved into engineering and executive management. The biography’s own phrasing is that he “started his career as production worker, then progressing through skilled trades via evening University and on to engineering and Executive Management.”

That account describes a path built inside manufacturing: practical production experience came first, followed by further education and increasingly technical and managerial responsibilities. The biography does not provide a dated sequence of his early jobs or identify the university.

What roles did Bosson hold at STMicroelectronics?

According to the LB Consulting biography, Bosson was CEO of STMicroelectronics America from 1992 to 1996, then chairman of that subsidiary from 1996 to 2010. It also describes him as responsible for worldwide R&D and manufacturing operations.

The biography lists work across production, maintenance, product and manufacturing engineering, facilities, and site operations. It says he led organizations in Europe, the United States and Asia. Those descriptions and the stated scope are the company biography’s account; its publication date is not stated.

What semiconductor manufacturing and R&D work did he lead?

Fab construction and operations

The biography credits Bosson with work on fab construction and startups, manufacturing-operation transfers, and site operations. It presents him as an operations leader working across factory functions, rather than as an individual inventor of semiconductor processes.

International silicon R&D alliance

LB Consulting says Bosson led an international alliance involving ST, NXP and Freescale focused on 300 mm wafers and technologies up to 45 nm. It also says he participated in negotiations that led to ST and IBM cooperation on 32 nm and 22 nm CMOS logic and differentiated technologies. These are claims about alliance leadership and negotiations, not evidence that Bosson personally invented or fabricated those technologies.

What was the Sicily solar-fab project?

The biography describes a project from 2010 to 2012 to convert a 12-inch semiconductor fab in Sicily into a solar thin-film manufacturing operation with stated capacity of 200 MW. It names Enel, Sharp and STMicroelectronics as joint-venture participants, and says Bosson helped build operations and teams and manage operational and product qualification. The project details and capacity come from his company biography, not an independently cited project record in the available account.

What does “47 years of experience” refer to?

LB Consulting’s biography states that Bosson had 47 years of worldwide management experience, but gives no publication year for that figure. It also says he energized an organization of 18,000 employees, two R&D centers and seven manufacturing technical centers. These are self-published descriptions of the organization’s scope, not independently audited measurements, and should not be read as current company figures.

Is this the ST executive who became Ferrari CEO?

No. The “From Topsoil to Silicon” title is linked by Bosson’s biography to a profile about him. Benedetto Vigna is a different ST executive: a separate 2021 EE Times story covered his appointment as Ferrari CEO. That story does not establish the subject of the topsoil-to-silicon profile.

The original EE Times profile was inaccessible for verification. Its author, publication date and any additional sourcing are therefore not established here. The career and project details above are attributed to Laurent Bosson’s company biography rather than presented as independently confirmed facts.
