The disc-drive Xbox Series X plays DVD, Blu-ray and Ultra HD Blu-ray movies, as well as Xbox One game discs and selected Xbox 360 and original Xbox games. Movie playback requires the Blu-ray Player app; older Xbox games work only if they are on the backward-compatible list. Some Series X models are all-digital, so check for an optical drive before relying on discs.
Xbox Series X disc compatibility at a glance
| Disc type | Does it work? | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| DVD movie | Yes, on a disc-drive Series X | Install the Blu-ray Player app from the Store. |
| Blu-ray movie | Yes, on a disc-drive Series X | Install the Blu-ray Player app from the Store. |
| Ultra HD Blu-ray movie | Yes, on a disc-drive Series X | Install the Blu-ray Player app from the Store. |
| Xbox One game | Yes, for compatible games | The game installs to the console, and the disc is needed to play. |
| Xbox 360 game | Some titles | Check the Xbox backward-compatible catalog; the disc is needed to play. |
| Original Xbox game | Some titles | Check the Xbox backward-compatible catalog; the disc is needed to play. |
Xbox lists drive-equipped Series X models alongside a 1TB all-digital Series X. The product name alone does not tell you whether a particular unit accepts discs, so verify the exact model and SKU on Xbox’s Series X product page.
Can Xbox Series X play DVDs, Blu-rays and 4K Blu-rays?
Yes. The disc-drive Series X supports DVD, standard Blu-ray and Ultra HD Blu-ray movie discs. Ultra HD Blu-ray is the format commonly called 4K Blu-ray. Xbox’s instructions say to install the Blu-ray Player app from the Store to play movie discs. See Xbox Wire’s Series X|S FAQ.
- Open the Store on the console.
- Find and install the Blu-ray Player app.
- Insert the movie disc in the console’s optical drive.
The format support does not establish that every individual disc will play in every region. Xbox’s cited guidance does not settle region coding or unusual disc edge cases, so check the disc and console documentation if a particular movie fails.

Do Xbox One game discs work?
Xbox One games are part of the Series X game library, and compatible disc-based games can be installed on the console. Keep the game disc inserted when you play: it acts as the license check even after installation. Compatibility can still depend on the specific game.
Do Xbox 360 and original Xbox discs work?
Only selected Xbox 360 and original Xbox titles are backward compatible. Check the Xbox backward-compatibility catalog for the exact game before counting on its disc. For a supported disc game, inserting the disc starts a download to console storage; the disc must remain in the drive to play.

Do not assume that a disc will run just because it is for an older Xbox generation. The catalog, rather than the generation printed on the case, determines whether an older title is supported.
How to check whether your Series X can read discs
- Look up the exact Series X model or SKU on Xbox’s product page and confirm that it has an optical drive.
- If you have a movie, install the Blu-ray Player app before playback.
- If you have an Xbox game, check the backward-compatibility catalog when it is an Xbox 360 or original Xbox title.
- For a supported disc game, allow the console to download or install the game and leave the disc inserted while playing.
Xbox’s 2020 FAQ says the Xbox Series S is fully digital and does not support external USB disc drives. That statement concerns Series S; it should not be treated as a substitute for checking the specific Series X model.

Does the 2026 disc-to-digital feature change disc compatibility?
No. In a 2026 announcement about a disc-to-digital entitlement feature, Xbox Vice President, Next Generation Jason Ronald wrote, “Most Xbox One and Xbox Series X disc-based games support this new feature.” That statement describes the feature’s eligibility, not a guarantee that every physical game disc works on every console. The announcement also says not every title is included; see Xbox Wire.
