The published compatibility and transfer guidance covers the previous transition—PS4 to PS5—and does not promise the same support for a future console.
What Sony’s PS4-to-PS5 support does—and doesn’t—tell us
Sony’s current US support page says PS5 can play the “overwhelming majority” of more than 4,000 PS4 games. That is a useful example of Sony’s previous-generation support, not a PS6 statistic or a forecast. Sony also lists PS4-only games and warns that some PS4 features may be unavailable on PS5, while some games may show errors or behave unexpectedly. The exception list can change. PlayStation’s PS4-to-PS5 compatibility guidance explains the current limits.
In other words, even confirmed backward compatibility can depend on the title, format, hardware and features involved. Sony has not yet published the equivalent rules for PS5 games on PS6.
Will PS5 games work on PS6?
Sony has not confirmed whether PS6 will play PS5 games, whether support will differ between digital and disc games, or whether compatible games will retain all their features. PS4 games can be downloaded from an account library or played from disc on a compatible PS5, but those PS4-to-PS5 options establish nothing about PS6.

For the previous generation, physical PS4 discs require a PS5 model with a disc drive; they cannot be used with PS5 Digital Edition. That illustrates why a future console’s disc hardware and format policies matter, but it does not establish what PS6 will support.
Will PS5 controllers and other accessories work on PS6?
There is no confirmed PS6 accessory-compatibility list. On PS5, Sony’s rules vary by accessory and game: DualSense, DUALSHOCK 4 and officially licensed third-party gamepads work with supported PS4 games, while PS5 games require DualSense. Licensed racing wheels, arcade sticks and flight sticks may work with PS5 games and supported PS4 games. Sony also cautions that not every licensed or third-party controller works.

Headsets and specialty equipment can have additional connection or game requirements. For any accessory, the relevant details are its model, licensing, connection type, target game and console—not just the brand. Sony’s PS5 backward-compatibility page describes these conditions for PS5; it does not say which accessories PS6 will support.
Will PS5 saves transfer to PS6?
No PS5-to-PS6 save-transfer method has been announced in the official guidance reviewed. Sony’s current transfer guide covers moving data from a PS4 or another PS5 to a PS5. It describes console-to-console transfer, PlayStation Plus cloud saves and, for PS4 saves, USB copying. The guide’s destination is PS5, not PS6.

A PS4 or PS5 console with a wired connection via a LAN cable is recommended. Version 4.0 of the Remote Play App on iOS and iPadOS or version 4.1 on macOS is required for games to be playable with the controller over Bluetooth.
The distinction between PS4 and PS5 saves matters: Sony says PS5 saves cannot be copied from a PS5 console to a USB drive. Do not treat the documented PS4 USB-save option as a general method for exporting PS5 saves. Sony’s PS5 storage guidance explains which kinds of data can be managed using different storage options.

- Keep access to the PlayStation account tied to your games and saves.
- Use Sony’s current PS5 transfer and cloud-save options to protect or move data within the systems those instructions cover.
- Check compatibility for the exact game or accessory with PlayStation or its manufacturer rather than assuming a PS5 label guarantees PS6 support.
- Wait for PS6 specifications before buying a controller, adapter, drive or game specifically on the assumption that it will work with PS6.
Sony’s official PlayStation site and support pages are the places to check for future PS6 announcements. The fact that current material describes PS5 rather than PS6 is not proof that Sony has made no statement elsewhere; compatibility policy can change, so check official guidance again before making a purchase or trade-in decision.
