Clean white canvas sneakers by hand with a mild soap solution, remove all cleaner residue, and let them air-dry at room temperature away from direct heat and sunlight. First check the care instructions for your exact shoe: bleach and machine washing are not safe defaults, and brand guidance differs.
What you need
- A soft-bristle brush or clean, soft cloth
- Mild dish soap and lukewarm water, or mild laundry detergent and warm water
- A second cloth and clean water for removing soap
- A towel to blot moisture and paper towels to help hold the shoe’s shape while it dries
How to clean white canvas sneakers
- Check the shoe’s care instructions. Follow the guidance for the specific model, especially if it prohibits washing or specifies a cleaning method. Converse, for example, advises against machine washing or drying its shoes. Converse’s care instructions and Clorox’s shoe-washing guidance both emphasize following the manufacturer.
- Remove the laces and dry-brush loose dirt. Brush gently so grit does not get worked into the canvas during cleaning.
- Prepare and test a mild cleaner. Mix a small amount of mild dish soap with lukewarm water, or mild laundry detergent with warm water, consistent with the product and shoe instructions. Test the solution on a hidden area first, as Converse recommends.
- Clean gently. Dampen a soft cloth or soft-bristle brush with the solution and work over the canvas without soaking the shoe. Avoid forceful scrubbing: adidas warns that hard scrubbing can fray or fade material.
- Remove the soap. Wipe the canvas with a separate cloth dampened with clean water, or use fresh clean water, until no soapy residue remains. Blot excess moisture with a towel. This is sensible cleaning practice, not a guarantee against yellowing.
- Air-dry slowly. Let the shoes dry completely at room temperature, away from direct heat and direct sunlight. Loosely stuff them with paper towels to help maintain their shape, replacing the paper if it becomes damp. The drying guidance is consistent with Converse and adidas.
- Clean the laces separately. Let them dry fully before putting them back in the shoes.
Why canvas sneakers can turn yellow
There is no single established cause for every yellowing case. DSW says harsh chemicals such as chlorine bleach may react with a shoe’s material or glue, and that excess heat or direct sunlight during drying may also contribute. Treat these as possible causes, not a universal explanation. DSW’s canvas-shoe guidance does not establish a guaranteed way to reverse existing yellowing.
Should you use bleach or a washing machine?
Neither is a universal solution. Care instructions conflict because shoes differ in materials, adhesives, and construction. Use a method only when the maker permits it for your specific shoe.

These recommendations are manufacturer and retailer care guidance, not controlled comparisons of cleaning performance. No universal method is established for reversing yellowing once it has appeared.
