Which Android option should you choose?
Valve’s Steam Link is the official, documented route for remotely viewing the Steam Frame headset view. Stream Frame by Boxtree, Inc. is an independent option that adds recording and capture retrieval, with more setup and a distinct live-stream security trade-off.

The documented facts do not establish that Steam Link is more secure than Stream Frame: Valve’s cited pages do not describe the viewing path’s encryption. They also provide no comparative latency, image-quality, reliability or phone-compatibility measurements.
How to view Steam Frame with Valve’s Steam Link app
- Install Steam Link for Android. Valve’s Android Steam Link support page directs users to Google Play for the free app and says Android users without Google Play can download it from Steam.
- Put the phone and host PC on the same network. This is the general network guidance on Valve’s Android support page.
- Connect to the Frame. Valve’s Steam Frame Debugging documentation says: “You can use Steam Link to view the headset’s view remotely. Using the iOS or Android app just connect to frame.”
The Frame-specific instructions identify the device as “frame”; Valve’s Android support page supplies general app and network context. Valve also documents a desktop route: open Steam settings, select Remote Play, then choose Connect next to the Frame.

When Stream Frame may be useful—and what it requires
Choose Stream Frame only if its recording features meet a need that Steam Link’s documented viewing workflow does not. The Google Play listing describes live preview, recording and retrieval of captures. These capabilities and setup details are developer-provided descriptions, not independent test results.
Live-stream setup
The listing describes connecting to the headset with frame.local, a DNS hostname or the headset’s local IPv4 address, then connecting over SSH. Live streaming requires Developer Mode, an SSH password configured on the headset, ffmpeg/ffprobe with the specified codecs, access to /dev/video99 and the phone on the same local network. The listing does not give a universal step-by-step configuration path for those prerequisites.

Audio and recording behavior
- The live preview is silent; selected headset audio is included in recordings.
- The developer lists a default recording mix of 35% game audio and 65% microphone audio. The mix can be changed before connecting.
- In the described recording mode, the original MP4 is saved on the headset before transfer, and downloads are verified after capture.
- Recording is on by default. Files remain in
/home/steamos/Videos/StreamFrameuntil deleted, so remove originals deliberately if storage or privacy matters. - The listing says streaming stops when you switch apps or lock the Android device.
What the security disclosures mean
Stream Frame’s Google Play description separates its SSH-protected operations from the live media channel: SSH encrypts login, control and recording downloads, while video and selected audio are sent over unencrypted UDP on the local network. The developer advises using a trusted network. Do not treat the live preview as encrypted in transit.
The listing’s developer-provided data-safety answers say “No data shared with third parties” and “No data collected.” Those declarations may change and do not alter the separate disclosure that live media uses unencrypted local-network UDP.

For Steam Link, Valve’s cited Frame and Android support pages explain the official viewing workflow but do not give protocol-level encryption details for it. That absence is not evidence that the traffic is either encrypted or unencrypted; it means the available documentation does not support a security comparison.

Both options are Android phone or tablet software routes, and the available documentation does not identify a phone model requirement. Start with a device you already have and check the relevant app listing and setup requirements before considering hardware.
