Travel chatbots can help search for flights, answer routine trip questions, retrieve some booking or flight details, and complete selected tasks such as check-in or seat selection. Their abilities are provider-specific: some are mainly discovery tools, some can act on an existing reservation, and some send travelers to an airline website or app to finish a purchase. For urgent disruptions or unusual cases, the key question is whether the provider offers a route to a human agent.

What a travel chatbot can—and cannot—do

“Travel chatbot” covers several different experiences. An airline’s customer-service bot may look up flight status or help with an existing booking. A conversational flight-search tool may suggest destinations and compare fares without managing a reservation afterward. A provider’s business-side virtual agent, meanwhile, is software used by travel companies to automate customer-service workflows.

It helps to distinguish three levels of capability:

  • Information: Answers general questions about baggage, itineraries, check-in, or a flight’s status. An answer about a specific booking may require a booking reference or account context.
  • Discovery: Searches or suggests flights and destinations based on a request, budget, or flexible dates. The chat may only help find an option; the purchase can happen elsewhere.
  • Action: Performs a task such as retrieving a boarding pass, selecting a seat, checking in, or creating a support case. These actions are not standard across all bots.

A conversational answer is not necessarily a completed transaction or a guaranteed live operational update. Before relying on a bot for a change, refund, or disruption, check what it can actually do and how to reach the airline if it cannot resolve the issue.

Travel chatbot examples compared

The comparison below reflects capabilities described by the providers, not a common independent test. Features, availability, and handoff terms can vary by market and over time.

Service What it is described as doing Where it appears or what happens next Important qualification
Air India AI.g Answers itinerary and flight questions; can check flight status, provide boarding-pass downloads, and create or track support cases. Air India’s capability page; Air India also described an AI.g WhatsApp experience. Air India’s January 2024 announcement said the WhatsApp bot covered more than 1,300 travel-related topics and four languages: Hindi, English, French, and German. Those are Air India’s figures for that announcement, not industry-wide measures.
Singapore Airlines Kris Booking and waitlist status, flight status, fare and next-flight lookup, baggage topics, check-in, and seats. Singapore Airlines’ chatbot page; it says Kris may offer a customer-service agent if it cannot resolve an issue and an agent is available. The stated handoff is conditional on agent availability.
Iberia GPT Flexible flight search, destination suggestions tailored to a traveler, budget-based recommendations, and multi-destination planning. Exploratory conversational search experience. Iberia’s June 4, 2025 announcement framed it as a channel for exploring travel, not a replacement for traditional customer service.
Virgin Atlantic flight search in ChatGPT Conversational flight search and comparison. The selected option is passed to Virgin Atlantic’s website or app for booking completion. Chat helps with discovery; the described flow completes the booking on another channel.
Virgin Atlantic Concierge Conversational planning for flights and holidays, with tap, type, or voice interaction. Virgin Atlantic’s Concierge experience. The announcement describes planning; it does not establish that every suggested trip can be purchased or managed within the conversation.
Talkdesk travel CX tools Vendor-described virtual agents can present rebooking options, handle confirmation, and escalate. Business-side customer-experience tooling for travel providers. These are vendor-described capabilities, not evidence of a particular airline’s deployment or a consumer chatbot’s universal features.
Hopper Technology Solutions Vendor-described support for reservations, changes, cancellations, refunds, and disruption management. Business-side travel technology offering. Hopper’s October 1, 2025 product announcement also included performance claims; those are vendor claims, not independent comparative results.

Consumer subscription prices or chatbot fees are not stated in the cited provider descriptions. Talkdesk and Hopper Technology Solutions are business offerings, rather than consumer-facing airline chatbots with a comparable consumer plan.

1. Air India AI.g: questions, flight details, and selected tasks

Air India’s AI.g capability page describes a bot for itinerary and flight questions, flight-status checks, boarding-pass downloads, and support-case creation and tracking. Its example prompts include “Can you help me book a flight from Delhi to Mumbai for tomorrow?”, “How can I check my flight status online?”, “Create a case for my lost baggage,” and “I need a status update on my case.” These examples show the breadth of requests the airline presents, but a booking-search prompt does not by itself establish that every purchase is completed in chat.

In a January 8, 2024 announcement about AI.g on WhatsApp, Air India said the bot covered more than 1,300 travel-related topics and supported Hindi, English, French, and German. The same announcement listed flight status, baggage information, boarding-pass and e-ticket access, seat selection, and support-request status. Treat the topic count and language list as Air India’s description at that time, rather than a current industry benchmark.

Best suited to: Air India travelers who want routine trip information or the specific self-service tasks the airline lists. Whether an answer is personalized may depend on providing booking or account details.

2. Singapore Airlines Kris: booking lookup and service guidance

Singapore Airlines says Kris can retrieve booking status, including waitlist information, and provide flight status, lowest-fare and next-flight lookup, baggage information, check-in guidance, and seat-related help. Its service page says Kris will offer a connection to a customer-service agent if it cannot resolve an issue, if an agent is available.

That caveat matters: escalation is not an unconditional promise of immediate human service. For a disrupted itinerary or a time-sensitive exception, use the airline’s stated support routes if the bot cannot help, and do not assume that every issue can be settled through chat.

Best suited to: Singapore Airlines customers checking common booking and travel details, especially where the airline’s listed lookup and check-in functions match the need.

3. Iberia GPT: exploratory flight and trip planning

Iberia’s June 4, 2025 announcement describes an experience for flexible flight searches—up to five days around selected dates—along with tailored destination ideas, budget-based recommendations, and multi-destination plans. It is useful to think of this as a conversational discovery layer: travelers can describe what they are looking for rather than begin with a fixed destination and date.

Iberia explicitly presented the experience as exploratory and separate from traditional customer service. That distinction is important if the goal is to change an existing ticket, resolve a baggage issue, or handle a disrupted trip; the announcement does not position Iberia GPT as a replacement service desk.

Best suited to: Travelers who are still deciding where or when to go and want ideas shaped around a budget or flexible dates.

4. Virgin Atlantic flight search in ChatGPT: compare, then complete elsewhere

Virgin Atlantic’s April 20, 2026 announcement describes conversational flight search and comparison inside ChatGPT. When a traveler selects an option, the described process passes them to Virgin Atlantic’s website or app to complete the booking.

This is a useful example of the difference between finding a flight and buying one. The chat experience can help narrow choices, but the cited flow does not complete the purchase inside the conversation. Travelers should expect to continue in the airline’s normal booking channel.

Best suited to: People who want a conversational way to search and compare Virgin Atlantic flights and are comfortable finishing the reservation on the airline’s website or app.

5. Virgin Atlantic Concierge: conversational holiday planning

Virgin Atlantic has separately described Concierge as a conversational planning experience for flights and holidays, with tap, type, or voice interaction. The announcement supports describing it as a way to explore and plan a trip through a conversational interface; it does not establish that every recommendation can be booked, changed, or serviced within Concierge.

Best suited to: Travelers who prefer a guided, conversational planning experience and want to explore flight or holiday ideas using more than typed prompts.

6. Talkdesk travel CX: virtual agents for provider support workflows

Talkdesk describes travel customer-experience tooling in which virtual agents can present rebooking options, handle confirmation, and escalate. This is a business-side product category: airlines and other travel providers use such tools to shape customer-service workflows. It is not, by itself, a promise that a particular airline offers those functions to its customers through a Talkdesk-branded bot.

Best suited to: Travel businesses evaluating virtual-agent workflows for rebooking and escalation. The specific customer-facing functions depend on the provider’s configuration and the travel company using the software.

7. Hopper Technology Solutions: reservation and disruption workflows for businesses

Hopper Technology Solutions’ October 1, 2025 product announcement describes support for reservations, changes, cancellations, refunds, and disruption management. These are vendor-described capabilities for business travel products and workflows, not a guarantee that every traveler can use a Hopper interface to perform each task on every booking.

The announcement also includes performance figures, but they are Hopper’s own claims rather than independent comparative results. They should not be treated as proof that the service outperforms another provider.

Best suited to: Travel businesses considering technology for post-booking service and disruption handling, rather than consumers looking for one universal travel chatbot.

How to choose the right chatbot for a trip

Start with the task, not the label “AI” or “chatbot.” A tool designed for inspiration may not be able to retrieve a reservation, and a support bot may not be the best place to compare destinations.

  • For destination or fare discovery: Check whether the bot supports flexible dates, budgets, or multi-stop requests. Find out where the purchase takes place; a chat search may hand off to a website or app.
  • For a booking-specific answer: Look for booking-status or waitlist lookup, and be prepared to provide a booking reference or sign in if personalization requires it.
  • For a concrete task: Confirm the exact action—such as seat selection, check-in, boarding-pass access, or case creation—is listed for that provider. “Can answer questions” does not mean “can modify a ticket.”
  • For flight changes or disruptions: Check whether rebooking, cancellation, or refund actions are explicitly supported and how to reach an agent if the bot cannot complete the task.
  • For language and channel: Confirm that the bot is available in the language and channel you plan to use. Air India’s four-language WhatsApp description, for example, applies to its January 2024 announcement and should not be generalized to other airlines.
  • For current operational details: Determine whether the answer comes from flight or reservation information and whether the provider identifies it as current. A chatbot response alone is not a universal guarantee of real-time accuracy.

What to expect when a chatbot cannot solve the problem

Chatbots are most straightforward for routine lookup and clearly defined tasks. Exceptions—such as a disrupted itinerary, a complex itinerary change, or a problem requiring judgment—may need a human or a different channel. Escalation policies vary: Singapore Airlines says Kris may offer an agent when it cannot resolve an issue and an agent is available, while other described examples do not establish an equivalent handoff.

Keep the booking confirmation and relevant travel details accessible when you contact support. If the bot offers a case number, save it; if it redirects you to an airline app or website, continue through that official booking channel rather than assuming the conversation itself changed the reservation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a travel chatbot book a flight?

Some conversational tools help search for flights, but search is not the same as purchase. In Virgin Atlantic’s described ChatGPT flow, a selected option goes to the airline’s website or app to complete booking. Other providers’ capabilities should be judged by their own stated transaction steps.

Can a chatbot make changes to an existing ticket?

Some business-side travel systems describe change workflows, but that does not establish that every airline chatbot can change a traveler’s ticket. Check the specific airline’s listed actions and follow its official service route if the requested change is not available in chat.

Are travel chatbot answers always live?

No universal real-time guarantee is established across these examples. Flight status and booking data are among the listed lookup capabilities, but the cited descriptions do not establish the freshness or accuracy of every answer in every situation.

Will a chatbot connect me to a person?

That depends on the provider. Singapore Airlines says Kris may offer a customer-service agent if it cannot resolve the issue and an agent is available; the other examples do not establish a universal human-handoff policy.

Can I use a travel chatbot without sharing booking details?

General planning questions may not require a reservation reference, but personalized booking answers can require booking or account context. Share sensitive details only through a provider’s official channel.
