You can make your PS5 library easier to manage now, but Sony has not confirmed whether PS6 will play PS5 games, restore PS5 saves, carry over PlayStation Store entitlements, or support current storage drives. Treat today’s PS4-to-PS5 instructions as useful precedent—not a promise about PS6. Keep access to your PlayStation account, understand where your games and saves are stored, and wait for official PS6 compatibility details before buying hardware specifically for the upgrade.

Will my PS5 games work on PS6?

Sony has not confirmed PS5 game compatibility on PS6 in the official material covered here. Current compatibility guidance describes PS4 games on PS5, not PS5 games on a future console, so it cannot establish what PS6 will support.

For context, Sony says PS5 supports the “overwhelming majority” of more than 4,000 PS4 games. Some titles may have missing PS4 functionality or errors, and a short list is marked PS4-only; the list can change. This describes PS4 games on PS5 and should not be read as a forecast for PS6. See PlayStation’s PS4 game compatibility guidance.

Will I keep my PlayStation account and digital games when I upgrade?

Sony’s current PS4-to-PS5 transfer instructions use the same PlayStation account on both consoles. That is a practical reason to keep access to the account you use for your library, but it does not confirm how PS6 will handle accounts or digital entitlements.

A game entitlement and its installed files are different things. On PS5, digital games can be downloaded from the Game Library; disc games are installed by inserting the disc. Sony’s current transfer process can move supported user and account information, saved data, captures, playable games, and certain settings, but what is eligible depends on the source console and whether you transfer during initial setup or later. It does not mean every item always moves. Details are in Sony’s PS4/PS5 data transfer instructions.

Disc ownership has a separate requirement: Sony says PS4 game discs need a PS5 with a disc drive, and the disc must remain inserted to play. PS4 discs do not work with PS5 Digital Edition. This tells you how current PS5 disc play works; it does not establish whether a future PlayStation will include a disc drive or support existing discs.

How do I transfer my PS5 saves to a new PlayStation?

Sony documents save-transfer options for moving data to a PS5, but not a PS6 migration process. For current PS5 use, its guidance identifies PlayStation Plus cloud storage for saved data and explicitly says PS5 saves cannot be copied from the console to a USB drive. A USB drive is therefore not a complete backup for a PS5 library’s saves.

For the documented PS4-to-PS5 workflow, Sony says to use the same account, install current system software, synchronize trophy information, and connect both consoles to the same network. The transfer utility can move supported data. Sony also lists cloud storage for saves; PS4 saves can additionally be copied to USB and then copied to the destination console. Check that wanted cloud saves have uploaded, and check your PlayStation Plus status before relying on cloud storage. Neither option is a confirmed PS6 restoration path.

Where should I keep game installs and saves on my PS5?

Game data and saved data have different storage rules on PS5. Sony’s storage guidance distinguishes PS4 and PS5 game installs, PS4 saves, and PS5 saves:

  • PS4 and PS5 game data: Sony lists M.2 storage for both. USB extended storage can hold PS4 game data; PS5 games must be moved back to console storage or M.2 storage before they can be played.
  • PS4 saved data: Sony lists cloud storage and USB copying.
  • PS5 saved data: Sony lists cloud storage, but not USB copying from the console.

These are current PS5 storage options, not a statement that the same drives or data will work on PS6. See Sony’s PS5 storage guidance.

Should I buy an external SSD now for PS6?

Do not buy a drive on the assumption that it will work with PS6. Sony has not confirmed PS6 support for PS5 M.2 SSDs, USB extended-storage drives, or any particular format or capacity requirement. A drive may still be useful for managing PS4 game data on your current PS5, but it cannot hold a USB copy of your PS5 saves.

If you buy storage for present-day PS5 use, choose it for the supported task you need now. Wait for Sony’s official PS6 storage requirements before treating any existing drive as a future-console upgrade.

PS5-to-PS6 preparation checklist

  • Keep access to the PlayStation account associated with your digital library. Do not create a replacement account just in anticipation of PS6.
  • Keep your PS5 system software current and synchronize trophy information, steps Sony includes in its documented transfer preparation.
  • Know which items are game installs and which are saves; they do not share identical storage and transfer options.
  • If you use cloud saves, verify that the desired saves have uploaded and that your account can use PlayStation Plus cloud storage.
  • If you need a removable copy of a PS4 save, USB copying is supported; do not expect the same for PS5 saves.
  • Keep physical discs if you rely on disc-based games, while recognizing that a future console’s disc support is unknown.
  • Check PlayStation’s official support information when Sony announces PS6 migration, compatibility, and storage requirements.

What is not yet confirmed for PS6?

The official PlayStation sources cited here do not confirm whether PS6 will play PS5 games, restore PS5 saves, preserve Store entitlements, support PS5 M.2 drives or USB extended storage, or include a disc drive. The previous PS4-to-PS5 transition is not evidence that any particular PS6 policy will be the same.

Sony’s overview of the PlayStation ecosystem discusses staying connected across PS4 and PS5; it likewise should not be treated as a PS6 migration announcement.
