It can add exterior coverage and grip, but it does not make the flexible screen or hinge damage-proof. If you choose one, match it to your exact phone model and generation, and keep following the manufacturer’s care instructions.
What a case can—and cannot—do
A foldable-phone case is an extra layer for the phone’s exterior. Samsung describes its foldable cases as protection for the device, but manufacturer care guidance does not say that every owner must use one. The available guidance also does not establish how much a case reduces damage risk or repair costs.
Think of a case as a personal choice based on how you handle your phone and what coverage you want—not a substitute for careful use. In particular, a case should not be treated as proof that the hinge or inner display is protected from drops, dust, or other damage.
How to choose a case for your foldable
- Check exact compatibility. Choose a case made for the phone’s precise model and generation. Foldable case designs are model-dependent; a case for a different version may not fit or work as intended.
- Decide how much coverage you want. Some designs may cover the hinge; others may leave it exposed. Hinge coverage is a design choice, not proven prevention of hinge failure.
- Balance grip and bulk. Consider whether the added thickness and feel suit how you carry and use the phone.
- Check normal operation. Confirm that the case does not obstruct buttons or ports and that the phone opens and closes normally.
There is no comparative case test in the available evidence that ranks these designs by protection. Choose based on fit and the coverage you value rather than assuming one style has demonstrated superior durability.

Care for the inner screen and hinge separately
Foldable displays need particular care. Google says the original Pixel Fold’s flexible display is softer than a traditional phone screen and advises checking for particles on the display and in the hinge before closing the phone. Samsung likewise describes its foldable screen protector as intended to protect against scratches and debris while withstanding folding and unfolding.
- Before closing the phone, check that crumbs, sand, dirt, and other fine particles are not on the display or in the hinge.
- Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the screen protector. Samsung does not recommend or authorize user removal of its protector and directs owners to an authorized service center for replacement, which may involve a cost.
- For the original Pixel Fold, Google says not to remove the preinstalled protector or apply a third-party one.
Those protector instructions are model-specific. Consult the support guidance for your own device rather than assuming that the same replacement or removal rules apply to every foldable.

Water and dust ratings are not guarantees
Ingress ratings apply to specific models and controlled test conditions; they do not mean a phone is waterproof or dustproof. For example, Google says the original Pixel Fold has an IPX8 rating but is not dust resistant, and its water resistance may diminish through ordinary wear, repair, disassembly, or damage. A drop may affect that resistance.
Google’s Pixel 11 Pro Fold guidance describes an IP68 rating when the phone leaves the factory, while warning that the device is not dustproof or waterproof and that resistance may diminish with wear or damage. That rating should not be applied to older Pixel Fold models.

Motorola says the Razr Fold was tested to IP46, IP48, and IP49 standards under controlled laboratory conditions, but also says it is not waterproof or dustproof. Its support guidance warns that dust exposure can reduce hinge life or damage the display, and advises avoiding drops, punctures, and scratches that could damage water-repellent features. These statements concern the Razr Fold, not foldables generally.

Manufacturer care guidance identifies risks to hinges and displays, but it does not establish how frequently hinges fail. Motorola specifically warns that dust can reduce the Razr Fold’s hinge life or damage its display; Google advises keeping fine particles out of the original Pixel Fold’s hinge. Neither statement shows that a particular case prevents hinge damage.

Samsung’s 2023 statement that the Galaxy Z Fold3 and Galaxy Z Flip3 were tested for “over 200,000 folds” is a limited durability figure, not a general promise. Samsung tied the result to certain temperature conditions and its quality standards, and said the tested life cycle was not guaranteed under other conditions. It does not establish drop resistance, durability for current models, or the effectiveness of cases.
