If a foldable phone’s hinge resists movement, stop and do not force it. Forcing the hinge, prying at the screen, or pushing hard on the fold can make damage worse. First check for an obvious loose obstruction without flexing the phone. If the hinge moves normally but the display or controls are frozen, troubleshoot it as a software problem instead.
First, identify whether the problem is mechanical or software-related

What to do when a foldable phone will not open or close
1. Stop applying force
Do not push hard on the center of the flexible display, bend the device backward, or use a fingernail or tool to pry it open. Samsung specifically warns: “DO NOT use excessive force when unfolding or folding.” The instruction is on its foldable phone care page. Google also cautions Pixel Fold owners against picking at the screen edges because the flexible display is softer than a traditional phone display.
2. Look for an obvious loose obstruction
Without flexing the phone, look for a card, coin, key, grit, or other object caught between the screens or visible at the hinge. Remove an object only if it is loose and can be lifted away gently without prying or force. Do not insert anything into the hinge or try to dig out hidden debris. Objects and fine particles can interfere with closure or damage the display or hinge; Google says to check for them before closing a Pixel Fold, and Motorola gives similar obstruction guidance for the Razr Fold.

3. Leave the factory screen protection in place
Do not peel the protective layer from the main screen or add adhesive accessories as a troubleshooting attempt. Google warns Pixel Fold owners not to pick at the screen edges or remove the protective film; Samsung also advises against removing the main-screen protective layer or attaching adhesive accessories. These are model-specific care instructions, not directions to replace a factory layer yourself.
4. Get service if the hinge still binds or the phone looks damaged
If the hinge remains stuck after you have checked for an obvious loose object—or the phone appears bent, damaged, or abnormal—stop trying to move it and contact the manufacturer’s support route for your exact model and country. Google advises Pixel Fold owners to contact customer service if the phone is damaged or not working properly. Its safety guide also warns that self-repair can cause electric shock, device damage, fire, or personal injury. Warranty coverage, repair prices, and local service availability depend on the device and location.

If the hinge moves but the phone is frozen
When the phone folds normally but its display or controls stop responding, use software troubleshooting rather than trying to work the hinge. Google’s Android Help recommends restarting the phone, checking for system updates and available storage, and checking whether an app is causing the problem. If those steps do not resolve the freeze, contact the phone’s manufacturer. These general Android steps address unresponsiveness; they will not free a mechanically binding hinge.

For a Pixel Fold, Google says not to open or close the device at or below -20°C (-4°F), because doing so may damage it. This limit is specific to Pixel Fold guidance and should not be treated as a temperature rule for every foldable phone. What not to try
- Do not force a resistant hinge or bend the phone backward.
- Do not pry with a fingernail, knife, pick, or other tool, and do not press hard on the middle of the flexible screen.
- Do not insert an object into the hinge or attempt to extract debris you cannot remove gently.
- Do not peel off factory screen protection as a fix.
- Do not treat cleaning or software troubleshooting as a repair for a hinge that physically binds.
