Use broad, diffused light instead of shining a bare lamp or on-camera flash directly at a LEGO model. Diffusion softens reflections on the bricks’ shiny plastic and makes shadows less abrupt. Start with two diffused lamps in front and slightly to either side, then check a test photo for hotspots, hard shadow edges, color casts, and dark areas.
Set up the model and background
Choose a surface and background that fit the picture you want. For a clean display or listing image, curve a large sheet of neutral poster board behind the model to create a seamless sweep. A tabletop or LEGO-built scene can work better when it adds context or atmosphere. There is no single background that suits every build.
Light the model first. If the background looks too dark, adjust its light separately rather than over-lighting the bricks or directing a stronger lamp at the model. An extra light above the work area may help even out the backdrop, but check the model and background independently. For general miniature photography, Games Workshop recommends a plain white paper background and cautions against lighting it so strongly that the subject is neglected.
Soften the light to reduce glare and hard shadows
LEGO bricks’ shiny plastic can reflect a light source as a bright, distracting patch. Brick Architect recommends putting white fabric between the light and the model or using a softbox. Both approaches spread the light, making its apparent source larger and its reflections less harsh.

- Place the model where you can move lights around it without blocking the camera’s view.
- Diffuse each lamp with white fabric or use a softbox. Avoid aiming a bare lamp directly at the bricks.
- As a starting arrangement, put two lamps in front of the model, slightly to either side. This gives you room to adjust how the highlights and shadows fall.
- Take a test photo. If a bright rectangular or circular reflection lands in a distracting spot, move the light or model and try again.
- Inspect the shadow edges. Crisp, sharply defined edges indicate hard light; softer edges indicate more diffuse light. Adjust the diffusion or light placement until the shadows are less distracting.
Games Workshop’s miniature-photography guide also advises against on-camera flash for this purpose: it can produce harsh, high-contrast light. Its two-lamp setup is a practical starting point, not a fixed formula for every LEGO model; larger or unusually shaped builds may need different light positions.
Choose a lighting setup that suits the shoot

Keep color consistent across the model
When you use more than one lamp, choose lights of the same type or color temperature. Mixed lighting can make one side of a model look warmer or cooler than the other. For a straightforward setup, avoid mixing light sources and check that neutral-colored bricks look neutral in the photo.

If you need consistent color across a batch of images, Brick Architect suggests using manual color settings, including occasional frames with a neutral gray card, and synchronizing calibration across the series. This is a more involved workflow; it is most useful when matching color from shot to shot matters.
Keep the camera steady and frame the build
A tripod or another stable support can help keep photos sharp when the exposure is long. A timer can reduce movement from pressing the shutter. These steps address camera shake; they do not reduce glare or soften shadows.

Leave a little space around the model so you can crop later, and choose a viewpoint that shows its shape naturally. For rectangular architecture builds, camera angle and converging lines can noticeably affect how the structure appears. For small figures, try a viewpoint near eye level; for larger models, a slightly higher angle can reveal more of the build.

- Bright hotspots on bricks: Diffuse the light, or move the light or model so the reflection falls somewhere less distracting.
- Sharp, dark shadows: Soften the light and reassess its placement. Look at the edge of the shadow, not just how dark it is.
- Uneven brightness across the background: Adjust the background lighting separately from the model’s lighting.
- Different color on each side: Check for mixed light sources and use lamps with consistent color.
- Soft or blurred details: Stabilize the camera and consider using a timer, especially during a longer exposure.
