Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFor a more comfortable, smoother Steam Frame experience, start with headset fit, then tune each game for a frame rate it can sustain. Lower per-eye resolution if performance is uneven before raising the refresh target. The right balance depends on whether you are playing locally or streaming PCVR, and on the game itself.
Which Steam Frame settings should I change first?
Steam Frame is a standalone SteamOS headset that supports local VR and non-VR experiences, as well as PC streaming. Valve describes it as “a standalone virtual reality headset designed primarily for low-latency streaming of player’s Steam Library from a PC, while also supporting standalone experiences for both VR and Non-VR.” The mode matters: a locally running title and a PC-streamed title rely on different hardware and connection paths, so a setting that works well in one may not suit the other. Valve’s Steamworks overview explains the headset’s intended use.
Make changes in this order: get a clear, comfortable fit; check the game’s frame-rate and refresh behavior; then adjust per-eye resolution and, if needed, throttling or motion smoothing. Change one setting at a time and judge it in the game you actually play. The goal is consistent frame delivery, not the highest number on every slider.
Get the fit right before tuning performance
Adjust the headset until the image is clear and the device rests comfortably. Valve lists an IPD target range of 60–70 mm and a maximum glasses width of 140 mm. These specifications can help you check whether the headset may fit your measurements, but they cannot predict individual comfort or replace careful adjustment. Valve also says the core module can be separated from the headstrap for use with other headstrap solutions. See the Steam Frame product page for the published specifications.

The available Valve guidance does not establish a complete consumer fit procedure or provide individualized medical advice. If the image is unclear or the headset is uncomfortable, resolve that before interpreting performance changes: discomfort and poor image clarity are not fixed by increasing refresh rate or render resolution.
Find per-game video controls in SteamVR
SteamVR provides per-application video preferences, including resolution per eye, a frame-limit or refresh override, throttling behavior, and motion smoothing. These controls let you tune one title without assuming that the same values suit every game. Valve documents them in its Steamworks Steam Frame documentation.

Valve’s developer-facing documentation gives 1728×1728 per eye and 72 Hz as defaults when the corresponding app preferences are unspecified. Those are documented defaults for the preference mechanism, not a universal consumer preset or a promise that every game will run smoothly at those values.
Balance refresh rate, frame limit and resolution
Choose a refresh target the game can sustain
The product page lists a 72–144 Hz refresh-rate range and identifies 144 Hz as experimental. A higher refresh target is not automatically better: if a title or streaming setup cannot deliver frames consistently, chasing that target can work against smoothness. Begin with a rate the specific game can hold reliably; raise it only if performance remains stable.

Adjust per-eye resolution in small steps
Steam Frame’s listed display resolution is 2160×2160 per eye, but the per-eye render resolution is an adjustable game preference. If frame delivery is inconsistent, try reducing render resolution before pursuing a higher refresh target. Increase it gradually only while the game remains smooth. This is a practical way to use the available controls, not a Valve-published test result or a guarantee about any particular title.
Use the trade-off that matches your priority
| Setting choice | What it changes | When to try it |
|---|---|---|
| Lower per-eye resolution | Reduces render detail in exchange for more performance headroom. | When frame delivery is uneven. |
| Higher refresh target or frame limit | Sets a more demanding timing target for the game and setup. | Only when the title can sustain it consistently; 144 Hz is experimental. |
| Throttling or motion smoothing | Changes how SteamVR handles titles that do not meet the target. | When tuning a particular application; assess the result in that game. |
Tune throttling and motion smoothing per game
SteamVR documents half-framerate throttling and motion-smoothing choices in its per-application settings. They affect how a title behaves when it does not meet its target, so evaluate them individually rather than treating either option as a universal comfort improvement. A setting that helps one game’s presentation may not feel right in another.

Valve’s SteamOS 0.3.0 release notes, dated September 17, 2026, mention a fix for per-app “Force Always-On” motion smoothing and improved motion smoothing in Alyx. The notes also record a game-dimming setting while the dashboard is visible and a change to play-area bounds behavior. These are version-specific change-log details, not recommendations that every player should enable a particular option. Read Valve’s SteamOS release notes for the relevant update details.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Keep standalone play and PCVR streaming distinct
For a standalone title, assess performance while the game runs on the headset. For PCVR streaming, consider both the game’s performance on the PC and the streaming connection to the headset. The per-game controls still matter, but a PC connection problem is not necessarily solved by changing the headset’s render resolution or refresh target.

If PC streaming has connection issues, check the headset and PC software versions against Valve’s current release notes. In its October 1, 2026 SteamOS 0.4.3 beta notes, Valve said the PC also needed SteamVR 2.18.2 or later to reduce Error 17 issues. That requirement is specific to the beta notes and may not describe later releases; verify the current version guidance rather than treating it as a permanent minimum.
Optional SteamOS beta settings and battery changes
Beta-channel software is still being tested, so its features and guidance can change. Valve’s October 1, 2026 SteamOS 0.4.3 beta notes added a dominant-eye-only option under VR Settings → General, exposed by enabling advanced settings. Valve describes it as an accessibility option; it is not a general performance preset.
The same beta notes reported power-efficiency and battery-lifetime gains of up to 12% during streaming and local gameplay, with results varying by frame rate and content. Treat this as Valve’s qualified beta-release claim, not a guaranteed improvement for every use case. Check Valve’s SteamOS release notes for the dated beta details and newer updates.
Quick Recap
A practical tuning sequence
- Fit: Adjust the headset until the image is clear and it rests comfortably; use the published IPD and glasses-width specifications as fit checks, not guarantees.
- Identify the mode: Decide whether the title is running standalone or streaming from a PC, then assess performance in that mode.
- Open the title’s SteamVR video preferences: Select the individual application’s per-app video settings to access its resolution, frame-limit or refresh override, throttling, and motion-smoothing options.
- Stabilize frame delivery: Start with a sustainable refresh target. If performance is uneven, lower per-eye resolution in a small step and recheck the same game scene.
- Test behavior options individually: If needed, adjust throttling or motion smoothing for that title, then keep the option only if the result suits you.
- Check versions for streaming errors: Consult current SteamOS and SteamVR release notes. Apply the 2.18.2-or-later PC SteamVR guidance only where the dated 0.4.3 beta notes remain relevant.
