Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

Check comfort, recording controls, privacy and data handling, phone and internet requirements, ongoing costs, and what happens if the provider stops supporting it. A polished demo or broad promise of “AI” is not enough to establish that a device will be useful.
First, decide what job the wearable should do
AI wearables do different jobs, so compare products intended for the same purpose rather than treating them as interchangeable.
Hands-free visual or voice assistance
Camera-equipped smart glasses may suit tasks that involve asking about what you see or getting assistance without taking out a phone. For example, Meta’s FAQ describes privacy features for its AI glasses, including a capture LED. That is Meta’s description of its own product; it is not an independent privacy audit, and it does not establish that every nearby person will notice or understand the signal. Read Meta’s FAQ.
Audio capture and meeting notes
A wearable recorder such as Plaud NotePin S is designed to capture spoken material and generate transcripts or summaries. Evaluate the recording controls alongside the full data path: whether processing happens locally or in the cloud, how long recordings and derived notes are retained, whether content may be used for model training, and how to export or delete it. Plaud’s product information and data policy describe the company’s functions and stated controls; check the policy and settings that apply to your product and region. Health or activity monitoring
Assess health and activity devices as a separate category. Before comparing them, specify which measure you need and what decision you intend to make with it. Verify the exact sensor, intended use, app support, and evidence for that measure. A general AI label does not establish health accuracy, and the sources available here do not support a specific health wearable recommendation.
Test the device against your real task
- Write down the task and success test. Choose something that recurs, such as capturing key points from a meeting or getting hands-free help while doing a task. Decide what would count as useful: fewer missed details, less time spent on a step, or an answer you can act on. Avoid judging it only by a staged demonstration.
- Try ordinary conditions. If the seller offers a return period, test in the lighting, noise, movement, interruptions, and wearing pattern you actually expect. Check accuracy and response time, how easy it is to correct an error, and what happens when it fails. No consistent independent hands-on comparison establishes how current competing products perform in these conditions.
- Test the interaction and fit. Wear it for a normal session, not just a brief try-on. Confirm that it stays comfortable and that starting and stopping capture, seeing or hearing activity signals, and using its controls fit your routine.
- Repeat enough to expose friction. Use it on more than one ordinary occasion if you can. A single successful interaction may not reveal setup steps, interruptions, missed captures, or corrections that make the device inconvenient day to day.
Check privacy and recording signals
Before enabling recording, find out what the device captures, when capture starts and stops, and what indication it gives while active. For a camera or audio wearable, consider the people nearby as well as your own preferences: decide where recording would be inappropriate, and check applicable local requirements and workplace rules before using recording features.

Read the privacy policy for the exact product and region. Look for where processing occurs; where recordings, transcripts, images, or other derived data are stored; whether content can be used to train or develop models; and how export and deletion work. Distinguish a vendor’s stated policy from independent verification. For example, Plaud’s policy, updated May 20, 2026, says that AI functions such as transcription and summarization are initiated at the user’s request, describes local default storage and optional Private Sync Cloud, and says user content is not used to train or develop models without explicit consent. These are Plaud’s policy statements; check the current policy and settings that apply to your account. Read Plaud’s policy.
Find out what the device depends on
List the requirements for the functions you care about. A wearable may depend on a compatible phone, an account, an internet connection, a subscription, or the provider’s servers. Confirm which features stop working without each dependency, and what remains available if you cancel a plan, lose connectivity, or the provider changes or closes the service.

Humane’s official consumer FAQ illustrates why this matters: it says that on February 28, 2025, the Ai Pin stopped connecting to Humane’s servers and no longer functioned as a cellular device or connected to those servers. This example does not predict what another company will do, but it shows why server-dependent functions and offline behavior belong in a buying decision. Read Humane’s consumer FAQ.
