You can claim a digital entitlement from some Xbox One and Xbox Series X game discs by inserting the disc into a disc-drive console and launching the game. Eligibility varies by title, and you must keep the qualifying disc: this is not a way to trade in or give away the disc and keep permanent digital access.
How to claim the digital entitlement
- Use a disc-drive console. The process applies to supported discs on Xbox One and Xbox Series X consoles. The Xbox Series S has no disc reader, so it cannot read the game disc.
- Insert the game disc and launch the game. Xbox describes this as the claim action for a supported disc. Exact menu labels, buttons, and prompts are not established as a universal sequence.
- Check the eligibility result for that disc on the console. Not every Xbox One or Xbox Series X disc qualifies, and eligibility may change for technical, licensing, publishing, or other reasons. Microsoft does not provide a complete title-by-title eligibility catalog in the cited rules, so do not assume a disc is eligible based on its format or console generation.
- Keep the qualifying disc. Microsoft conditions the digital license on continued possession of the disc and may require revalidation. If you no longer possess it, access may be suspended or revoked.
Xbox announced the process on August 26, 2026, saying players can claim a digital entitlement by inserting a supported disc into an Xbox One or Xbox Series X console and launching the game: Xbox, “Your Discs. Now Also Digital.”
What happens if you do not have the disc or a compatible console?
An Xbox Series S cannot claim an entitlement from a disc because it cannot accept or read one. If you have a Series S, you need access to a supported disc-drive console for the claim process.
If the disc is ineligible, or you later lose access because you no longer possess the qualifying disc, Microsoft’s stated fallback is to purchase the digital version separately. That purchase does not convert the physical disc; it is a separate license. Microsoft’s applicable rules explain that the disc-conditioned entitlement may be revalidated and that access can be suspended or revoked when the disc is no longer possessed: Microsoft Services Agreement.
