After you claim a digital entitlement for an eligible Xbox One or Xbox Series X game disc, you can launch the game without inserting the disc each time—but you must keep owning the qualifying disc. Microsoft says the digital access is conditional: if you no longer possess the disc, access may be suspended or revoked. The disc itself remains usable.

What changes—and what does not

Claiming the entitlement changes how you access the game; it does not turn the disc into an unconditional digital purchase. Microsoft describes the disc-to-digital license as limited and says it remains conditioned on continued possession of the qualifying disc. Microsoft may revalidate eligibility, and access may be suspended or revoked if you no longer possess that disc. The license cannot be transferred separately from it. Microsoft’s digital-goods usage rules set out these conditions.

You do not have to insert the disc for each play after claiming the entitlement. However, retain it: Xbox says it continues to work as it did before. You can still use the physical copy by inserting it to play.

Can you sell or give away the disc?

Do not assume you can sell or give away the disc and keep digital access. Because the entitlement depends on continued possession, Microsoft may suspend or revoke access if you no longer have the qualifying disc. The rules do not describe an automatic, immediate cutoff; they state that access may be suspended or revoked and that the license cannot be transferred separately from the disc.

Which discs qualify, and how do you claim the entitlement?

The feature is for supported Xbox One and Xbox Series X game discs, and the console needs an optical drive. Xbox says most Xbox One and Xbox Series X disc-based games support the feature, but not every title qualifies and eligibility can change. Xbox 360 and original Xbox game discs are not supported under the published FAQ. Xbox’s Series X FAQ advises checking for a claim prompt on the console to determine whether a particular disc is eligible.

  1. Sign in on an Xbox One or Xbox Series X console with an optical drive.
  2. Insert the game disc you want to check.
  3. Launch and play the game, then follow any on-screen prompt to claim the digital entitlement. If no claim prompt appears, the disc may not be eligible.

Xbox’s feature announcement describes claiming by inserting a supported disc and launching the game. It also notes that Microsoft may add or remove eligibility for technical, licensing, publishing, or other reasons, so a title’s eligibility is not guaranteed permanently. Xbox Wire’s announcement gives the feature details.

Do Play Anywhere or Cloud Gaming come with every claimed game?

No. Xbox says the digital experience can include Xbox Play Anywhere and Xbox Cloud Gaming where supported, not for every eligible game. Play Anywhere is limited to participating games, and Microsoft’s general rules also limit use to compatible devices and one device or console at a time. The entitlement does not automatically provide access on every PC, handheld, cloud service, or account. Check the individual game’s support and applicable account or device rules. Microsoft’s usage rules explain the broader digital-game licensing context.
