Integrate warehouse automation by first deciding which system owns each part of the work, then mapping the data and state changes between systems, agreeing on supported interfaces and recovery behavior, and testing complete warehouse flows with operators and equipment vendors. The right design depends on your WMS release, automation, and operating processes; there is no universal WMS-to-equipment interface.

1. Scope the warehouse processes and equipment

Start with the processes the integration must support, rather than with a list of APIs. For each process, document its start, expected outcome, equipment involved, and the events the WMS must receive.

  • Receiving and inbound putaway
  • Replenishment and inventory movement
  • Picking, sortation, and packing
  • Shipping, returns, and inventory adjustments

Include the actual equipment in scope. The India-focused DPIIT Standards for Warehouse Management Systems names WCS connections to equipment such as sorters, diverters, put-to and pick-to-light systems, ASRS, pallet shuttles, and robotics. Treat this as an example list, not a requirement for every warehouse.

For each process, note where work begins, what event changes its status, what the operator sees if it cannot proceed, and what constitutes a completed transaction. This gives the WMS, automation, and operations teams a shared scope before interface design starts.

2. Assign system ownership and boundaries

Write down which system is authoritative for each business or operational responsibility. Product labels such as WMS, WES, and WCS do not guarantee identical roles across vendors or installations; document the responsibilities of the products you are actually deploying.

Responsibility to assign Question to resolve
Item, location, and facility data Which system creates and maintains each master record?
Inventory and warehouse transactions Which system is the source of truth for on-hand quantities and transaction history?
Work creation and release Which system creates a task, and which decides when it is ready for execution?
Execution and equipment control Which layer sequences work, controls equipment, and reports progress? Which functions remain in equipment controllers?
Exceptions and overrides Which system defines exception codes, presents them to operators, and permits manual intervention?

If a WES is part of the design, specify what orchestration it performs and what remains with the WMS and WCS. Honeywell describes WES as providing visibility across disparate automation systems and orchestrating fulfillment, but this is a vendor description, not a universal architecture requirement: Honeywell’s WES overview.

ISA-95 can help teams discuss enterprise-control boundaries and terminology. The International Society of Automation says that “ISA-95 Part 2 specifies conceptual interface content exchanged between manufacturing control functions and other enterprise functions.” Its overview also describes Parts 4 and 8 in relation to operations-management objects and information-exchange profiles. Use the standard as a vocabulary and modeling reference, not as a ready-made WMS-to-robot API: ISA-95 Series of Standards.

3. Map master data, identifiers, and transactions

Create a field mapping for every exchanged entity. For each field, record its meaning, format, allowed values, system of origin, and how the receiving system validates it. Resolve identifier ownership and aliases explicitly: two systems must not silently treat different item, bin, or work IDs as equivalent.

Master and setup data

Check whether the integration requires item and barcode records, facility-specific item properties, vendors, stores, locations, or assets. Oracle’s release 23D integration guide lists examples of setup data in these areas; the exact entities and schemas depend on the product pair and release. See the Oracle Warehouse Management Cloud Integration API Guide, release 23D.

Transactional data and state changes

Map the records needed to execute and report work, such as purchase orders, inbound shipments, task IDs, quantities, statuses, timestamps, and exception results. Oracle’s release 23D guide separately covers transactional and setup-data integration with host systems. Use the selected products’ current specifications for the actual field names and required payloads.

For each transaction, document its trigger, payload, acknowledgement, and resulting state transition. Define how the WMS learns that work was accepted, completed, partially completed, rejected, or diverted to manual handling. Include units of measure and, where the operation uses them, lot or serial details. The integration contract should establish which system’s state prevails if records disagree.

4. Choose an interface for each flow

Use an interface that both products officially support for the specific flow. Record the product releases, API or schema version, authentication method, network path, payload format, and process for handling interface changes. Do not choose a transport merely because another warehouse used it.

Oracle’s release 23D guide documents XML and delimited flat-data formats, REST over HTTPS, and SFTP through a site hosted externally. It says Oracle automation interfaces generally use REST web services rather than SFTP or files. These are Oracle-specific details, not a general rule for other WMS or automation products.

Documentation changes with product releases. Oracle’s release 26B WMS documentation index lists current guides, including REST API and Integration API guides. Confirm the detailed interface behavior for the deployed product and release rather than carrying a 23D example forward unchanged.

5. Compare feasible architecture patterns

Compare candidate designs against the same processes and responsibilities. These patterns are planning options, not universal recommendations; actual product capabilities determine which are feasible.

Pattern to assess Boundary questions What to validate
WMS connected directly to automation interfaces Can the WMS issue the required work and receive the necessary equipment feedback? Where does equipment sequencing occur? Supported transactions, device-level responsibilities, exception visibility, and whether the integration surface covers every in-scope flow.
WMS with a WCS layer Which work decisions stay in the WMS, and which equipment commands and responses are handled by the WCS? Task handoff, status mapping, equipment mix, and how WMS inventory and work state reflect execution outcomes.
WMS with WES and WCS layers What orchestration does the WES perform, and where do WMS and WCS responsibilities begin and end? Ownership of release and sequencing decisions, visibility across automation, exception routing, and the additional interfaces and support responsibilities.

For each candidate, also assess peak workload, manual fallback, training, upgrade windows, access control, network segmentation, audit records, and incident ownership. Set operational thresholds with the vendors and warehouse team; the sources cited here do not establish universal values for latency, queue depth, or throughput.

6. Define errors, reconciliation, and recovery

Write down expected behavior for failure cases before build completion. A successful response in a normal case is not enough to establish how the warehouse will recover when systems or equipment disagree.

  • Lost connection or delayed response
  • Malformed, rejected, or duplicate message
  • Out-of-order status update
  • Equipment fault or task that cannot proceed
  • Partial completion, diversion, or manual override

For each case, specify whether to retry, reconcile, cancel, or send the work to an operator; who can initiate recovery; what the operator should do; and how the WMS task and inventory state are corrected. Confirm retry, idempotency, acknowledgement, and ordering behavior in the actual vendor contracts. The reviewed materials do not establish one cross-vendor recovery standard.

7. Test complete flows before cutover

Test the integration as warehouse work, not only as isolated messages. Use representative scenarios in a test environment and include the operators and equipment vendors who will be involved in commissioning and acceptance.

  • Verify identifier and field mappings across master and transactional data.
  • Run normal process paths from work creation through completion and WMS update.
  • Test peak and interrupted flows, including rejected, delayed, partial, and manually handled work.
  • Exercise message replay and system restart, then confirm that duplicate or stale updates do not leave work in an ambiguous state.
  • Reconcile WMS inventory and task state against automation results after exception and recovery scenarios.
  • Validate operator instructions, escalation paths, and manual procedures.

DPIIT’s India-focused WMS standards list integration and testing among implementation aspects, alongside business requirements, configuration, project management, training, and deployment. Adapt any jurisdiction-specific implications to the warehouse’s location and requirements: DPIIT Standards for Warehouse Management Systems.

8. Prepare monitoring and ongoing ownership

Before go-live, assign named owners for interface changes, incident response, version upgrades, and inventory or task reconciliation. Decide how the team will observe interface latency, rejected or ageing work, queue depth, equipment availability, inventory mismatches, and manual workarounds. Set thresholds to fit the warehouse’s processes and vendor-supported behavior; no universal target values are established here.

Agree on an escalation route that connects warehouse operations, IT, engineering, and the vendors. Include who may pause or resume work, how unresolved transactions are reconciled, and how changes to schemas or equipment behavior are reviewed before deployment.
