In Great Britain, you can use an operator’s account limits to cap deposits, stakes or losses, and its time-out setting to pause play. To exclude yourself from multiple licensed online gambling operators, consider GAMSTOP. These controls have different scopes: check what each one covers before relying on it.
Choose between a spending cap and a break
If you plan to keep gambling but want to set a budget, use a financial limit in the operator’s account settings. If you want to pause gambling with one operator, look for its time-out or break control. If you want to stop across multiple online operators in Great Britain, consider self-exclusion through GAMSTOP.
A financial limit is not a time-out or self-exclusion. The UK Gambling Commission (UKGC) describes self-exclusion as a formal agreement to stop gambling for people who recognise gambling is harmful and want support to stop. Read the UKGC’s self-exclusion guidance.
Find the limit controls in your app
Open the account or profile area and look for labels such as “Safer gambling,” “Responsible gambling,” “Limits” or “Time out.” These are suggested search terms, not universal menu labels: the exact path depends on the operator. If you cannot find the controls, use the app’s help section or contact customer support.

For remote gambling covered by its standard, the UKGC requires financial-limit tools to be easy to access, linked from the homepage and deposit screens, and available with few clicks. Operators must also prompt customers to set a limit and explain when it will take effect. See the current RTS 12 requirements.
Pick a limit by what it measures
Read the definition before entering an amount. A “deposit limit” has a specific meaning in the UKGC standard: it caps gross deposits. Other limits can track different activity, so the same amount will not necessarily control the same thing.

| Net deposit limit | Deposits minus withdrawals during the chosen period. |
Check whether the limit applies to the whole account or only to a particular product or channel. RTS 12 says the operator must make the scope clear. The operator may offer more than one kind of limit, but gross deposit limits are required by the standard.
Choose a period and understand when it resets
RTS 12 requires limits for 24 hours, 7 days and 1 month. If you set limits for more than one period, the most restrictive combination applies. For example, the UKGC says a £10 daily deposit limit together with a £100 weekly limit means no more than £10 can be deposited per day and £70 in that week.

Before saving, check when the chosen period resets and whether the operator uses a fixed reset point or one tied to your account. The standard requires operators to explain when a limit takes effect; the app’s own wording should tell you how its periods work.
Save the limit and know how changes work
Under the current RTS 12, operators must implement limits as soon as practicable and tell you when they will take effect. A request to reduce a limit must take effect immediately unless a technical failure prevents it. Increasing a limit is slower: you must request the change, wait at least 24 hours, then positively confirm it after the cooling-off period.
For active accounts, operators must prompt customers to review account and transaction information at least every six months. These requirements are described in the UKGC’s RTS 12 page, last updated 30 September 2026.
Take a break or exclude yourself
Use the operator’s time-out for a pause
In the app, search for a time-out, break or safer-gambling setting. Read the duration and scope before confirming: options vary by operator, and a break with one service may not stop you accessing other gambling apps. The UKGC says there is no evidence establishing an ideal break duration, so choose based on what you need rather than assuming one length suits everyone. Use GAMSTOP for broader online self-exclusion in Great Britain
GAMSTOP lets you self-exclude from online gambling websites and apps operated by businesses licensed in Great Britain with one request. Check the scheme’s coverage and terms when you register. A service may have product-specific exceptions: for example, National Lottery Responsible Play says GAMSTOP covers its Instant Win Games but not its Draw Games. It says customers seeking exclusion from all National Lottery games need to use its own settings too. For the National Lottery service specifically, its page lists short breaks from one day to five months, longer breaks from six months to five years, and lifetime exclusion; it says those settings take effect immediately for that service. These durations are not a general rule for other operators.
The UKGC’s player guidance says self-exclusion requires the operator to close the account and return remaining account funds. Check the full guidance for details.

Gambling-blocking software is another possible barrier. National Lottery Responsible Play names Gamban and BetBlocker; check each service’s current terms, device coverage and availability before installing it. A bank block or blocking app can supplement limits or self-exclusion, but should not be treated as a guarantee that access is impossible or as a replacement for seeking support.
Reality checks and time trackers can also help you notice how long a session is lasting. The UKGC lists them as ways to monitor time; check whether your operator currently offers these features. See the Commission’s time-and-money guidance.
Get support if gambling is causing harm
The UKGC lists the National Gambling Helpline as free and available 24/7 in England, Scotland and Wales: call 0808 8020 133 from England or Scotland, or 0808 2819 265 from Wales. If you are elsewhere, seek local official support. See the UKGC’s safer-gambling information.
