Start by checking where you bought the Grok subscription: on grok.com, through Apple’s App Store, or through Google Play. That channel determines where to manage payment details, cancel, or request a refund. If you were charged but still see an upgrade prompt, first confirm that Grok is signed in to the account used for the purchase.
First, identify where the payment was made
Grok web purchases, App Store purchases, and Google Play purchases use different billing and refund routes. Use the same account that made the purchase when checking its subscription or contacting support.
| Purchase channel | Manage payment or subscription | Refund route |
|---|---|---|
| Web | Sign in at grok.com and open Settings → Billing. | Submit a request to xAI using the Refund Request form, signed in with the account used for the subscription. |
| Apple App Store | Manage the subscription and transaction through Apple’s subscription settings. | Apple handles App Store transaction refunds. |
| Google Play | Manage or cancel the subscription through Google Play. | Submit a request to xAI using the Refund Request form, signed in with the account used for the subscription. |
Grok consumer subscriptions are separate from xAI API billing, even if you use the same sign-in. Manage API billing in the xAI Console, not in Grok Settings → Billing. X Premium is separate as well; xAI says X handles X Premium refunds where required by law.
If a Grok web payment fails or the billing page will not open
Open billing while signed in to the purchasing account
- Go to grok.com and sign in to the account that made the purchase.
- Open Settings → Billing to manage the subscription or update the payment method.
- If Manage Subscription does not open the billing portal, try an incognito window or a different browser. xAI says ad blockers and other apps or extensions can block the button.
- If you still cannot reach payment settings, contact Grok support and ask for help updating the card.
The Grok consumer FAQ explains where to update a payment method, but it does not publish a Grok-specific list of decline codes. If a card is declined, verify the details with your card issuer and ask whether it blocked the transaction; the FAQ does not establish a particular cause for an individual decline.

- No hidden fees and no long-term contracts
- Mobile card reader that accepts payments anywhere & anytime
- Use the free SumUp App on your smartphone or tablet to start accepting transactions
- Simply pay 2.6% +10 per in-person transaction
X Help lists incorrect card or billing-address details, account daily limits, issuer restrictions on internet transactions, and proxy or VPN use that can interfere with bank IP verification as possible causes for failed X subscriptions. That is adjacent guidance, not an xAI diagnosis or a confirmed Grok policy.
If a payment is pending
The xAI Grok FAQ does not state how long a pending authorization should take to clear. Do not treat the refund estimate as a pending-payment timetable: xAI says approved refunds for web and Google Play purchases are typically returned to the original payment method within 5–10 business days. That is an estimate for approved refunds, not a guarantee or a timeline for a pending card authorization.

If you were charged but Grok still asks you to upgrade
Check that the account matches
Grok ties a subscription to the account used to buy it. If web or mobile appears not to recognize the subscription, compare the sign-in account on each device with the purchasing account. A mismatch can make access appear absent without indicating that you paid twice.

Refresh an active subscription’s status
If the subscription shows as active but Grok still prompts you to activate or upgrade, the FAQ recommends these checks:
- Confirm the subscription status in Grok and, for an app-store purchase, in the relevant app-store subscription list.
- Update the Grok app, then sign out and back in.
- Restart the app; if the mismatch remains, clear its cache or reinstall it.
These are access and activation checks; they do not prove that a card payment succeeded. If you find charges on both web and a mobile platform, contact support to resolve the duplicate billing and discuss a refund.

Check service status and contact the right support route
Check the xAI status page while troubleshooting. On October 4, 2026, it showed “No incidents declared” and listed Grok web, iOS, and Android as available; its status can change. A clear status page does not confirm that a card issuer, app store, or individual transaction is working.
For Grok billing concerns, xAI’s FAQ directs users to contact support through the app or grok.com; xAI also lists support@x.ai for Grok product support. Include:
