For routine hard-floor cleaning, start with normal or balanced suction; use carpet boost when your robot offers it, and choose mop settings according to whether rugs should be lifted over, avoided, or crossed. Increase suction or mop intensity only when the cleaning task calls for it. These controls differ by model, so confirm their availability and behavior in your robot’s app or manual.
What suction setting should you use?
For everyday vacuuming on hard floors, normal or balanced suction is a sensible starting point. If debris remains, increase suction or run another pass if your robot supports it. There is no universal setting chart for every robot and floor; treat this as a practical starting point, not a manufacturer rule.
On carpet: enable carpet boost if available
Carpet boost raises suction automatically when the robot detects carpet. Roborock says suction returns to normal when the robot is back on hard flooring. It is an automatic adjustment, not a reason to run maximum suction across every surface. Roborock explains how Carpet Boost works.
Maximum suction is most useful when a job calls for extra pickup, such as debris embedded in carpet or a targeted second pass. Check the floor-care guidance for your flooring and the controls available on your model.

When quieter operation or longer runtime matters
Some robots offer lower-power modes for lighter maintenance. For example, iRobot’s support information for the Roomba 900 series describes Eco-Mode as using less power for longer cleaning and quieter operation, while Performance Mode increases vacuum power across surfaces. This is specific to that series; do not assume other Roomba models or brands use the same modes. See iRobot’s Roomba 900 series Power Boost information.
How do you stop the mop from wetting a rug?
Before a combined vacuum-and-mop run, check whether the robot detects carpet and what it does when it reaches one. On supported Roborock models, the available carpet behaviors have distinct results:
- Rise: lifts the mop and stops water flow on detected carpet.
- Avoid: skips the carpet.
- Cross: travels over the carpet without mopping it.
- Ignore: treats the carpet as an area that may be mopped; Roborock describes this option for homes without carpets or mats that may be mopped.
Choose the behavior that matches the rug: keep it dry, avoid it entirely, or allow the robot to cross without cleaning. The options and their names are model-dependent. Roborock describes its carpet settings here.

Confirm carpet detection and mop lift on your model
Roborock lists the S7, S7MaxV, S7Max Ultra, S8, S8+, S8 Pro Ultra, and Q Revo as models that can recognize carpet ultrasonically and lift the mop automatically; the company recommends that function for short-pile carpet. Do not assume another model detects every rug or lifts its mop to the same height. Check Roborock’s model-specific mop-lift information.

Standard route for routine mopping
On the Roborock models covered by its route FAQ, Standard Mop Route permits suction and mop-intensity adjustments. It is the more suitable option when you want a regular cleaning run and control over those settings.
Deep route for denser coverage
On those same listed models, Deep Mop Route uses a Z-shaped path that Roborock says is almost twice as dense as the standard route. It minimizes suction and takes longer. Roborock recommends mild or moderate scrub intensity for deep routing. These details are not a universal description of other robot brands or models. How much water should you use?
Water-flow controls vary by model. Roborock’s Q7 family page lists three water-flow levels. Its S7/S8 support information describes three scrub levels and says water flow changes along with scrub intensity; that linkage applies to the models covered by that information, not necessarily every Roborock. If you are managing dampness, begin with the lowest flow or intensity that cleans effectively, then adjust based on the result and your floor manufacturer’s care directions. This is cautious general guidance, not a setting prescribed by all robot manufacturers.
Use only the cleaner specified for your robot
Roborock says to use only its branded floor cleaner in the water tank to prevent corrosion or damage. This is Roborock-specific advice; follow the instructions for your own robot rather than assuming the same cleaner guidance applies across brands. Read Roborock’s S7/S8 guidance.
Check the exact model before relying on a setting
Settings, menu labels, and feature availability can vary by model and software. Roborock notes that some Q7-series functions may arrive for certain models through an over-the-air update. Check the live app or owner manual for your robot before relying on carpet detection, mop lift, route, water-flow, or scrub controls. The Q7 series page notes feature availability and updates.
