You can get exposure to ether (ETH) by holding it directly or buying shares in an ether exchange-traded product (ETP) through a brokerage account. The choice changes what you own, how custody works, which costs apply, and what risks you take. Direct ownership makes access to a crypto platform or wallet—and, with self-custody, private-key security—your responsibility. An ETP replaces personal wallet custody with product-level arrangements, but its fees, share price, custody terms, and any staking policy still matter.

Should I buy ETH directly or an ether ETP?

They are different investments. With direct ETH ownership, you hold ether through a crypto platform or control it using wallet keys. With an ether ETP, you own shares in a product whose structure and terms are set out in its prospectus; you do not own ether in a personal wallet. The SEC’s Investor Bulletin on spot bitcoin and ether ETPs, published September 9, 2024, explains this route and its risks. An iShares preliminary prospectus dated July 31, 2026 describes trust shares as beneficial interests in a trust whose assets consist primarily of ether; that prospectus is subject to completion, so its terms may change.

What to compare Direct ETH Ether ETP shares
What you own Ether held through a crypto platform or accessed with wallet keys. Shares in a trust or product, under the terms of its prospectus.
Access and custody Requires decisions about platforms, custody, and possibly wallet security. Losing self-custody keys can permanently remove access. Purchased through a brokerage account; sponsor and custodian arrangements apply at the product level.
Potential ongoing costs Platform, custody, and network costs may apply; check the current provider terms. A sponsor fee and brokerage costs may apply. Sponsor expenses reduce the ether exposure represented by shares over time.
Price relationship ETH trades in crypto markets, with venue and execution considerations. Shares can trade above or below net asset value (NAV), and may not track ETH exactly.
Staking May be offered through some arrangements, with technical and counterparty risks. Depends on the product’s current terms; staking can add loss and liquidity risks.
Regulatory structure Crypto custody and platform arrangements apply. Spot ether ETPs register under securities laws but, according to the SEC, are not registered as investment companies under the Investment Company Act of 1940.

Neither route is simply a cheaper or safer version of the other. Compare the specific platform or product, including its custody arrangements, charges, execution, and risks.

Do I need a wallet to invest in Ethereum?

No. You need a wallet only if your chosen route or use case requires one. Buying an ether ETP through a brokerage account does not require you to manage a personal ETH wallet. If you buy ETH directly, a crypto platform may hold it for you, or you may choose self-custody.

A wallet is a device or program that manages private keys or passcodes used to access crypto assets; it does not literally store the ether itself. Investor.gov warns that losing or compromising those credentials can mean an irreversible loss of access or assets. Self-custody therefore puts the responsibility for safeguarding keys on you.

When a hardware wallet may fit

A hardware wallet is an optional physical tool for someone who chooses self-custody. It does not eliminate scams, user mistakes, or every key-security risk, and it is not needed to own ETP shares. No particular brand or model is recommended here.

What fees should I compare?

Separate three different costs rather than treating them all as “Ethereum fees”:

  • Ethereum network transaction fees: costs associated with using the network. The amount depends on transaction conditions; check current official Ethereum information or a current estimator before sending a transaction. No live fee figure is provided here.
  • Trading costs: charges or spreads from a crypto platform or brokerage when buying or selling. Check the provider’s current schedule and the order’s execution details.
  • ETP expenses: a product’s sponsor fee and other applicable costs. Sponsor expenses reduce the ether exposure represented by shares over time. Fees and waivers can change, so check the specific product’s current prospectus and fee schedule rather than relying on a past promotion or another issuer’s terms.

These costs arise in different places: a network fee relates to a transaction on Ethereum, a trading cost to executing an order, and an ETP expense to holding a particular product.

How do ETP share price, NAV, and tracking differ?

NAV is the value of a product’s assets per share under its valuation method. An ETP share trades in the market, so its market price can be higher or lower than NAV. That premium or discount means the price you pay or receive may not match the value of the ether exposure represented by the shares. Tracking can also differ from ETH itself; read the product’s disclosures and consider both its current pricing and terms.

Do ether ETPs stake their ETH?

Not necessarily. Staking policy is specific to each product and can change. A Grayscale 2025 annual filing, filed in 2026, describes risks that include possible loss of staked ether and periods when it may be inaccessible. By contrast, an iShares preliminary filing stated that its trust did not then intend to stake its ether. That statement is product- and filing-specific, not a rule for all ether ETPs. Check the latest prospectus for the product you are considering.

What risks come with ETH and ether ETPs?

The SEC’s Office of Investor Education and Advocacy urged investors in its September 9, 2024 bulletin to weigh carefully the risks and benefits of products tied to bitcoin or ether, and described both as highly speculative investments. Past performance does not establish what ETH or an ETP will do in the future.

Risks of holding ETH directly

  • Self-custody keys can be lost, stolen, destroyed, or compromised, potentially causing permanent loss of access.
  • Using a crypto platform means relying on that platform’s custody and operations as well as handling the risks of trading and transfers.
  • Staking, where available, can involve technical and counterparty risks.

Risks of holding an ether ETP

  • Shares can trade at a premium or discount to NAV and may not track ETH exactly.
  • Sponsor fees and other product costs reduce net exposure over time.
  • You rely on the product’s sponsor, custodian, and operational arrangements rather than holding ether in your own wallet.
  • Staking, if permitted, may introduce risks such as loss of staked ether or delayed access to it.
  • The ETP label does not mean the product has every protection of a mutual fund: the SEC says spot bitcoin and ether ETPs are not registered investment companies under the Investment Company Act of 1940.

What about taxes on ETH or ether ETPs?

Tax treatment depends on jurisdiction and circumstances. The sources cited here do not establish current tax outcomes for buying, selling, transferring, or staking ETH, or for holding and selling ETP shares. Consult current tax-authority guidance for your jurisdiction or a qualified tax professional before relying on a tax conclusion.
