IPL teams can spend heavily on one player because they are bidding under a fixed purse for scarce skills, roles and opportunities to strengthen a squad—not simply choosing whether a player is “worth” a large sum in isolation. Auction theory helps explain why competitive bids can overshoot value, but a high winning price alone does not prove a team was irrational or fell for the winner’s curse, sunk cost fallacy or FOMO.

How does an IPL mega auction work?

A mega auction is a larger squad-building event than a mini auction: more players are available, and franchises may have to reshape more of their rosters. A 2025 peer-reviewed study describes mega auctions as typically occurring every four seasons, but that is a general description, not a guarantee that the IPL must follow a fixed timetable.

The auction is only part of the process. Before bidding, franchises can retain players and, where permitted, use a Right to Match (RTM) option. Those choices affect how much of a squad is already assembled and how much budget remains to compete for players at auction. In the 2025–27 cycle, a franchise could retain up to six players in total through retention and/or RTM, with a maximum of five capped and two uncapped players. The combination was at each franchise’s discretion, so teams did not all enter the auction with the same roster or purse. These rules were announced by the IPL Governing Council on 28 September 2024 and apply to that cycle, not automatically to later ones.

What did “budget” mean in the 2025–27 rules?

The 2025 auction purse and the overall salary cap are different figures. The Governing Council set the 2025 auction purse at INR 120 crore. It listed total salary caps of INR 146 crore for 2025, INR 151 crore for 2026 and INR 157 crore for 2027. The total cap comprised the auction purse, incremental performance pay and match fees.

Season Auction purse Total salary cap
2025 INR 120 crore INR 146 crore
2026 Not stated separately in the 28 September 2024 IPL Governing Council release INR 151 crore
2027 Not stated separately in the 28 September 2024 IPL Governing Council release INR 157 crore

The release also introduced a per-match fee of INR 7.5 lakh for each playing member, including the Impact Player, and said the Impact Player regulation would continue through the 2025–27 cycle. These figures help explain why “the team has INR 120 crore to spend” is not a timeless or complete description: the purse figure was specified for the 2025 auction, while the listed total salary caps covered three seasons.

Why do IPL teams spend so much on one player?

A franchise is not buying a player in a vacuum. It is trying to assemble a workable squad under constraints: a limited purse, retained players, role requirements and uncertainty about which alternatives will still be available later in the auction. If several teams value a scarce role highly, competition can push the price up even when each team began with a different estimate of the player’s value.

A large bid may reflect a team’s view that a player can fill a difficult-to-replace role, improve the balance of the XI, or address a performance need. It can also reflect the changing alternatives as bidding proceeds. Once another bidder wins the player, that option disappears; the relevant comparison is therefore not only “Is this player worth this amount?” but also “What can we still acquire with the money and roster spots we have left?”

DESI BOARD GAMES Cricket Champions Boardgame | Light Strategy Dice Game | 2-5 Players
  • IT'S A LIGHT STRATEGY GAME WITH A TOUCH OF LUCK. Players take on the role of one of eight cricket teams competing in a championship. In each round, players bat and bowl one over using six dice. As the game progresses, players gain experience, allowing them to enhance their skills. The game lasts for five rounds (45-60 minutes) and offers four different ways to earn winning points.
  • 2–5 PLAYERS, DESIGNED FOR ALL LEVELS OF EXPERIENCE. The game is made for both cricket fans and newcomers. No cricket knowledge is required to play, but the game can be a fun way to learn the basics! Its mechanics are easy to pick up while offering enough depth to keep things interesting across multiple plays.
  • KICKSTARTED AND COMMUNITY-TESTED. The game was funded on Kickstarter by a global community of board gamers and cricket lovers. It’s been playtested across age groups and regions, with feedback helping refine gameplay into a smooth, balanced experience.
  • HIGH REPLAYABILITY WITH MULTIPLE STRATEGIES. Will you go for high-risk sixes or a slow build-up with power cards? With each match playing out differently, no two games are ever the same. The more you play, the deeper your strategy gets.

That does not mean any price is sensible. A team can spend too much relative to its own plan, leave too little for other roles, or concentrate salary in a way that reduces squad depth. But a single bid cannot reveal the franchise’s full valuation, its alternatives, or whether its overall roster plan succeeded.

What is the winner’s curse in an auction?

The winner’s curse is a risk in auctions where bidders are estimating a common underlying value. Each bidder has an imperfect estimate; the winner is often the one whose estimate was highest. If that estimate was too optimistic, winning can mean paying more than the asset’s eventual or common value.

A 2010 paper in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences reported experiments in which the winner’s-curse effect appeared when people competed against human opponents, even after researchers reduced the calculation burden. That supports the general auction mechanism. It is not evidence that a particular IPL franchise misjudged a particular player.

In cricket terms, a high winning bid is consistent with a winner’s curse, but it does not establish one. To make that diagnosis, a reader would need a defensible measure of the player’s value to the team and evidence that the price exceeded it. Performance after the auction can inform that judgment, but injuries, role, team context and uncertainty also affect outcomes; a disappointing season by itself does not prove the bid was irrational when made.

Do teams get carried away by sunk cost or FOMO?

Sunk cost: past spending is not a reason to keep bidding

The sunk cost fallacy is letting money or effort already spent influence a decision that should be based on future costs and benefits. In an auction, a team might in theory continue because it has already invested time, planning or money in pursuing a target. The rational question at each new bid is whether the next increment is worth paying, given the player’s expected contribution and the remaining options—not how much effort has already gone into the pursuit.

The IPL’s purse rules make accumulated spending relevant as a constraint: money already committed leaves less for later players. That is different from treating past spending as a reason to bid again. The official rules and the IPL strategy study discussed below do not establish that any named franchise continued bidding because of sunk costs.

FOMO: scarcity is a plausible pressure, not a documented motive

Fear of missing out is a possible way to interpret public competition for a scarce player. If a franchise sees a role as hard to fill and expects few substitutes later, it may be tempted to bid more aggressively. Yet the sources cited here do not measure FOMO among IPL bidders or establish it as the cause of any specific bid. It is a useful question to ask about auction dynamics, not a verified explanation of a team’s motives.

Does an aggressive auction strategy improve a team’s results?

A 2025 study by Dhruv J. Joglekar, N. David Pifer and Sachin Narayanan examined 127 team-season observations from 11 teams that appeared consistently in the IPL, covering seasons from 2009 through 2024. The authors grouped teams by auction and roster characteristics, then tested whether strategy-cluster assignment was associated with winning percentage or playoff probability.

Their regression analyses found no statistically significant differences in either outcome across the clusters in that sample. That is a bounded observational result, not proof that all auction strategies are equivalent, that auction choices do not matter, or that a different strategy could not help a team. The study excludes teams that participated inconsistently, and its findings should be read within its sample and methods.

How can you judge a team’s auction choices?

Rather than calling a franchise’s approach a masterclass or a failure based on one headline price, assess the whole set of decisions against the roster it needed to build. Useful questions include:

  • Spending: How much did the team pay relative to the player’s base price and the purse still available?
  • Role coverage: Did the signings address the team’s needs and provide a workable balance of roles?
  • Continuity: How did retention and RTM choices shape what the team needed to find at auction?
  • Concentration and depth: Did salary commitments leave enough resources for the rest of the squad?
  • Fit: Does the player’s likely role align with the team’s performance needs?
  • Outcomes over time: Are conclusions based on enough seasons to account for uncertainty rather than one result?

Those questions separate a visible bidding decision from the harder task of evaluating a complete roster strategy. The available IPL study does not identify one universally successful approach, and the winner’s-curse framework explains a risk in competitive bidding rather than proving that a particular expensive signing was a mistake.
