Before moving between cold and warm environments, seal the camera in a bag or case and let it acclimate before opening it. If condensation forms, stop using the camera and follow its model-specific manual.
Before you enter: check the camera and limit exposure
Read the handling instructions for your exact camera and lens. Dust- and drip-resistance varies by model and is not a guarantee against dirt, dust, water, or salt getting inside. Canon makes that limitation explicit for the EOS R5; its guidance is not a rating for other cameras. Canon EOS R5 handling precautions
- Secure the battery, card, and terminal covers before entering.
- Keep the camera dry. A weather-resistant label or an improvised cover does not make a damp location safe.
- Avoid changing lenses in dusty surroundings. Panasonic advises avoiding lens changes in dusty environments and fitting a lens or body cap when storing an interchangeable-lens camera. Panasonic guidance on lens or sensor debris
During the visit: keep the body closed
Minimize the time the camera is exposed, and do not open the battery or card compartment just to inspect it in dusty or humid air. If you must change a lens, move to the cleanest, driest sheltered place available, point the open mount downward where practical, and keep the body open for as little time as possible. The positioning advice is a practical precaution; Panasonic’s manufacturer guidance is to avoid lens changes in dusty environments.
A bag or cover may reduce direct exposure, but the manufacturer guidance cited here does not establish a universal protective rating for improvised covers. Do not treat a plastic bag over an operating camera as tested dust protection or waterproofing.

Moving between temperatures: prevent condensation
Fogging happens when a camera encounters a substantial change in temperature or humidity. Panasonic describes condensation when equipment moves from outside or a cold room into a warm room. Panasonic fogging guidance
- Before moving the camera across a significant temperature boundary, place it in a sealed bag or case.
- Let the camera adjust to the new environment while sealed; open it only after it has acclimated. Canon and Nikon recommend this approach, and Panasonic recommends acclimation and a sealed bag for severe differences. The required time depends on the camera and conditions; follow its manual rather than assuming a universal interval. Canon EOS R50 handling precautions · Nikon ZR cautions · Panasonic fogging guidance
Keeping the camera sealed while it adjusts also avoids leaving it open to dust. Nikon Europe specifically notes this advantage when moving cold cameras and lenses into warm conditions. Nikon Europe: moving cold cameras and lenses into warm conditions

If the lens, viewfinder, or screen fogs up
Stop using the camera and let the moisture evaporate. Do not keep shooting or open the body while it is wet. Canon’s EOS R50 manual says not to use the camera or remove the lens, card, or battery while condensation remains. Follow your own model’s instructions; do not apply another model’s timing advice as a universal rule. Canon EOS R50 handling precautions
If the camera was wet, wipe it only as its manual directs and allow it to dry fully. If you suspect moisture, dirt, dust, or salt entered the body, Canon’s EOS R5 guidance advises prompt consultation with service. Canon EOS R5 handling precautions

Removing loose dust safely
For loose dust on accessible surfaces such as the lens exterior, viewfinder, or body, use a suitable hand-operated camera blower and follow the camera’s manual. Canon recommends a commercially available blower; Nikon recommends gently blowing away dust and lint before wiping the body with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid directing debris into openings. Storing the camera between visits
For extended non-use, Nikon advises storing the camera in a cool, dry, well-ventilated place. Its D850 manual describes using desiccant in a plastic bag and notes that desiccant gradually loses capacity and should be replaced. It does not establish a universal replacement interval or humidity target, so follow the storage guidance for your equipment. Desiccant supports appropriate storage; it is not proof that sachets protect a camera during continuous damp exposure. Nikon D850 care and storage guidance
Casio mentions silica gel in a bag for drying a camera interior in a specific fogging scenario. Treat that as model-specific troubleshooting, not a general remedy for water ingress. Casio: “Why does the lens fog up?”
