An action RPG gets complicated when its loot, character build, and endgame progression all affect one another. A gear affix may make a particular skill stronger; that can make the skill central to a build, which changes how you judge every later drop. The challenge is not just learning more systems—it is understanding how each one changes the value of the others.

Why an action RPG can feel hard to follow

In a simpler upgrade loop, a bigger number usually means a better item. In a system-driven action RPG, an item can have a higher general rating yet be worse for a character because its particular affixes do not support that character’s skills or play style.

Power may also come from several places at once: character level, skills, passive choices, equipment, crafting, and endgame progression. When these sources interact, a decision in one area can change the value of choices elsewhere. More options can make a character feel distinctive, but they also mean the player has more information to track.

That relationship is captured in Blizzard Lead Systems Designer David Kim’s early Diablo IV design discussion, which described the philosophy as “Easy to learn, difficult to master.” The post is historical design commentary, not a guide to Diablo IV’s current mechanics. How loot turns into a build decision

General ratings are clues, not verdicts

A broad value such as Attack or Defense can help a newer player notice a possible upgrade. But once a build depends on specific skills or affixes, an item’s usefulness depends on whether its bonuses advance that plan. A higher general rating is a signal to inspect an item, not proof that it belongs on the character.

This distinction appears in Blizzard’s early Diablo IV design post: broad stats were discussed as accessible upgrade signals, while additional affixes could matter more to an optimized build. Treat that as an explanation of the design tradeoff, not a claim about today’s item rules. Blizzard’s design discussion

Simpler drops can mean more work elsewhere

Loot systems can reduce the number of dropped items or affixes to make initial comparisons easier, then shift customization into crafting. Blizzard’s 2024 Season 4: Loot Reborn article described this approach for that season: Tempering added an affix chosen from learned manuals, while Masterworking upgraded affixes using materials from the Pit. Those are Season 4 details, not reliable instructions for the current 2026 game; check current patch notes before relying on them operationally. Blizzard’s Season 4: Loot Reborn article

Why builds make systems interact

A build is a plan for how a character deals damage, stays alive, and uses skills. Its complexity grows when skill choices, passive bonuses, gear affixes, crafting options, and progression systems each alter the value of the others. For example, an affix that boosts a favored skill may make a piece of gear valuable despite a less impressive broad rating; that gear can, in turn, make investing further in the skill more attractive.

To understand a build, a player may need to track not just which choices are individually strong, but which choices work together. The practical questions are how many systems contribute to power, how clearly the game signals an upgrade, how much room there is to specialize, and whether decisions can be changed. These are comparison questions, not a published score for judging games.

Why endgame is more than higher difficulty

Activities can form a progression path

Endgame systems often give repeated activities their own goals and rewards. Eleventh Hour Games’ current support documentation describes Last Epoch’s Monolith of Fate as its main endgame system: timelines contain echoes, completing echoes builds stability, and quest echoes lead toward bosses and blessing choices. Players are therefore managing a progression path as well as choosing where to fight. Last Epoch support: What is the Monolith of Fate?

Parallel tracks add goals to follow

Last Epoch also has endgame factions with separate progression tracks and their own rewards or challenges. The official support article says multiple factions can be active at the same time. That adds another layer of planning: a player may be pursuing more than one kind of endgame progress during the same period of play. Last Epoch support: What are Endgame Factions?

More choice changes how farming feels

In a historical account of its Monolith overhaul, Eleventh Hour Games described reward-specific echoes, an expanding web of choices, and different objectives as ways to give players more agency. The post also discussed the Shade of Orobyss encounter and its effects on timeline progress and corruption. These details explain the overhaul’s design rationale; they should not be assumed to describe every part of the current game unchanged. Eleventh Hour Games’ Monolith Overhaul post

A practical way to compare complexity

Rather than declaring one action RPG objectively more complicated than another, compare the kinds of decisions it asks you to make. The framework below is a practical aid, not a standardized rating system.

Aspect Question to ask Why it matters
Power sources How many systems contribute to character strength? More interacting sources can mean more build decisions. Blizzard’s early Diablo IV design discussion describes power coming from several sources, including skills, level, items, and progression.
Drop readability Can you spot likely upgrades without evaluating every affix? Clearer drop signals reduce the work of comparing loot; Blizzard’s 2024 Season 4 article described reducing affix counts as part of making item upgrades easier to understand.
Crafting control Can you deliberately change an item, and what resources or limits govern that choice? Crafting may give more control over gear while adding another system to learn. The Tempering and Masterworking examples above refer specifically to Season 4 as documented in 2024.
Endgame agency Do activity choices change rewards, challenges, or progression? Reward and route choices can make farming more strategic, while increasing the number of decisions to manage. Last Epoch’s current Monolith description and historical overhaul post offer examples.
Overlapping progression Can separate progression tracks be active at once? Parallel tracks add goals and systems to follow. Last Epoch’s official support documentation says multiple endgame factions can be active at once.

Finding the right level of depth

Players may want more room to specialize without wanting to calculate every drop or manage several progression interfaces. A Reddit post phrased this as looking for an ARPG “deeper and less mind numbing than D4, but also less confusing than POE.” That is one player’s wording, not evidence that it represents a broad preference. It does, however, express the central tradeoff: depth is valuable when the player can understand what choices do and why they matter. The individual Reddit post

When choosing what kind of complexity suits you, focus on where you want decisions to live. Some players enjoy evaluating affixes and shaping gear; others prefer a clear upgrade path and a few meaningful build choices. Endgame systems can add satisfying goals, but the right fit depends on whether you enjoy managing linked decisions—not simply how many systems a game contains.
