Before switching from coaxial cable internet to fiber, confirm fiber can be ordered at your exact address, compare the actual plans and full costs, and find out what installation and equipment your home will need. If losing internet service would be disruptive, keep coax active until the fiber connection is installed and working.
Can you get fiber internet at your address?
Availability is specific to an address or unit—not just a neighborhood or city. In the United States, start with the FCC National Broadband Map. It shows provider-reported availability, technology, and maximum advertised download and upload speeds. The FCC cautions that “The National Broadband Map shows internet availability, not network performance, affordability, or adoption.” (FCC map guidance.)
Use the map as a starting point, then enter the full service address with the provider and verify that you can actually order the specific plan. Ask whether the connection is fiber to your premises, whether any construction is required, and what installation dates are available. If the FCC map lists service that a provider says you cannot order—or omits service you know is available—the FCC explains how to submit an availability challenge in its challenge guidance.
How do the actual coax and fiber plans compare?
Compare the cable plan you have now with the fiber offer available at the same address. Read the plan details rather than judging by the technology label or a headline speed.

| What to compare | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Availability and timing | Whether each plan can be ordered at your address and its earliest installation date. |
| Download and upload speeds | Both advertised figures for the specific tiers. Upload capacity matters for video calls, sending large files, and cloud backups. |
| Monthly cost | Ongoing price after promotions, taxes or local fees, equipment charges, and any installation or activation charge. |
| Data and contract terms | Any data limit or overage charge, contract length, early-cancellation fee, and equipment-return rules. |
| Installation and home network | Where provider equipment will go, what wiring is needed, whether a router is included, and whether your network can use the selected speed. |
| Service support | How outages are reported and handled, and whether you need a separate backup connection for critical service. |
Compare uploads as well as downloads
A plan’s download speed is only part of the picture. If you regularly upload work files, back up photos, or join video meetings, compare the advertised upload speeds too. Fiber plans can offer symmetrical download and upload speeds, but that is a plan-specific feature, not a guarantee for every fiber provider or tier. GFiber, for example, describes its service as symmetrical; check the plan offered at your address rather than assuming the same terms apply elsewhere.
Do not assume fiber will be cheaper or perform better in every respect
A faster advertised tier may not be the best value if your devices or home network cannot make use of it. And the sources cited here do not establish a neutral, current, apples-to-apples measured comparison of cable and fiber performance. Avoid treating a general claim about latency or reliability as a promise about your connection; look for comparable evidence from the providers and consider the service details they actually disclose.
What happens during fiber installation?
Fiber normally connects to provider equipment such as an optical network terminal (ONT) or a provider-branded equivalent. Your router then connects to that equipment, typically over Ethernet. The installer may need to run a new fiber drop, make an entry through an exterior wall, or place equipment where it can receive power. The exact work depends on the property and provider.

- ⚠️ CABLE INTERNET ONLY - NOT COMPATIBLE WITH: Fiber (Verizon FiOS, AT&T), DSL, Satellite, or Fixed Wireless. ONLY works with cable providers like Xfinity, Spectrum, Cox. Verify your internet type BEFORE purchase.
- 🚫 NO WiFi INCLUDED - ROUTER REQUIRED: This is a modem ONLY. You MUST buy a separate WiFi router to get wireless internet. Without a router, only ONE device can connect via Ethernet cable. This does NOT replace your current WiFi router.
- 🔌 CABLE INTERNET REQUIRED: Works EXCLUSIVELY with cable internet service (DOCSIS) from providers like Xfinity, Spectrum, or Cox. Will NOT work with fiber (Verizon FiOS, AT&T), DSL, satellite, or fixed wireless internet. Contact your ISP to confirm compatibility BEFORE purchasing.
- 🚀 MULTI-GIG PERFORMANCE: Supports internet plans up to 2.5 Gbps with 2.5 Gbps Ethernet port. Designed for plans 1 Gbps and faster from certified providers: Xfinity (up to 2.33 Gbps), Spectrum (1 Gbps), Cox (2 Gbps). Verify your plan speed and provider compatibility.
- 💡 SETUP REQUIREMENTS: You need: (1) Cable internet service, (2) Separate WiFi router with 2.5 Gbps port for full speeds, (3) ISP activation. This modem cannot create WiFi networks or connect multiple devices without additional equipment.
Before ordering, ask the provider:
- Whether a new drop, wall entry, or technician appointment is needed.
- Where the ONT or equivalent can be installed and whether a power outlet is required there.
- Whether existing wiring can connect the handoff point to the preferred router location.
- Whether installation or activation has a charge, and whether the quoted amount depends on the work required.
- Whether self-install is available for your address and what equipment or existing fiber outlet it requires.
GFiber’s guidance is one provider-specific example: professional installation installs a Fiber Jack if one is not already present, while some previously served homes may qualify for self-install. Do not assume another provider—or even a different home—will have the same installation options.

The coax modem is not a fiber handoff
A cable modem designed for coax generally will not connect to a fiber ONT or Fiber Jack. Ask the fiber provider what equipment is included and whether you must use its gateway or may attach your own router. GFiber says customers can connect a third-party router to the Fiber Jack’s Ethernet port; that is a GFiber-specific equipment option, not a universal rule.
Check the router’s wired ports and placement
If the provider permits your router, confirm that its WAN port and relevant LAN ports support the speed tier you intend to buy. Wi-Fi generation alone does not establish that a router can handle a multi-gig wired connection. Also consider where the fiber handoff and router will sit: a fast plan cannot by itself ensure strong Wi-Fi throughout a home.

Designed for plans 1 Gbps and faster from certified CABLE providers: Xfinity (up to 2 Gbps), Spectrum (1 Gbps), Cox (2 Gbps). NOT compatible with fiber internet services. Verify your plan speed and provider compatibility.
- 🔌 MODEM ONLY - NO WIFI INCLUDED - This device is a cable modem with ONE Ethernet port only. It does NOT provide WiFi or wireless connectivity. You MUST connect your own separate WiFi router to this modem to create a wireless network. This is not an all-in-one gateway or combo unit.
- ⚡ DOCSIS 3.1 TECHNOLOGY: Latest cable standard with 32x8 channel bonding for reliable multi-gig speeds. Backward compatible with DOCSIS 3.0 networks. Eliminates monthly modem rental fees (typically $14-20/month). For CABLE internet only - verify compatibility with your cable provider.
A suitable Ethernet cable may be needed between the fiber handoff and router, but providers may supply cabling or equipment. Check what comes with installation before buying accessories. Avoid buying a generic ONT or “fiber modem”: the termination equipment is provider-specific and is normally part of the service installation.

Policies differ by provider and can change. GFiber and Spectrum are examples of providers with their own terms; neither is a basis for assuming the terms of all fiber offers. Save the order confirmation and the plan details you accepted so you can check the charges against the offer later.
When should you cancel coax service?
If an internet gap would matter, do not cancel the cable plan before the fiber connection is installed and tested. There is no universal transition timeline: installation availability, construction, and the outgoing provider’s cancellation process all vary.
Quick Recap
- Confirm the fiber order and installation date, including any work required before installation.
- Keep coax service active through installation if you need continuous connectivity.
- After the technician leaves, test the fiber connection and confirm that the service works where you need it.
- Then arrange cancellation with the cable provider. Confirm the effective date, any billing overlap or final bill, and how and when to return its equipment.
A practical switch checklist
- Check the exact address on the FCC map, then confirm purchasable plans directly with each provider.
- Compare your current cable tier and the available fiber tier on advertised download and upload speeds.
- Get the installation method, appointment, equipment location, power needs, and any charges confirmed.
- Check router rules and wired port capability for the speed you plan to use.
- Review the regular price, fees, data terms, contract, cancellation terms, and equipment-return instructions in the order details.
- Keep coax until fiber works if avoiding downtime is important; cancel and return old equipment afterward.
