That breadth helps explain why PS5 emulation is difficult: matching the CPU instruction set is only one part of reproducing a console.
Can you play PS5 games on a PC with an emulator?
Not reliably with the project covered here. The shadPS5 project describes its emulator as experimental and says: “Not yet. We’re still building out the core emulation layer. Some things boot, some things render a frame or two, but it’s nowhere near playable.” That is the project’s own status statement, not an independent test. It does not establish a usable emulator or a broad compatible game library.
The project describes its intended Windows, Linux, and macOS support and outlines several emulation mechanisms, but its page also lists rendering and compatibility work as upcoming. Why PS5 emulation is more than running x86-64 code
Sony specifies that the PS5 uses an x86-64 AMD Zen 2 CPU. That is a familiar instruction-family foundation for desktop PCs, but it does not make PS5 games directly compatible with PC hardware. An emulator must reproduce the surrounding platform behavior games depend on, not simply execute their CPU instructions.

CPU instructions and translation
According to shadPS5’s description, its CPU approach uses dynamic binary translation: translating code intended for the console so it can run on the host system. Even if the host and target share broad CPU architecture traits, the translator still has to handle differences in execution and how game code interacts with the rest of the console.
Graphics commands and shaders
The PS5 uses an AMD RDNA 2-based graphics engine, while a PC emulator must present a graphics interface the host can use. shadPS5 says its design translates GPU command packets and shaders to Vulkan. Correctly translating graphics work is distinct from translating CPU code; shaders, synchronization, and game-specific assumptions can all affect whether a scene renders correctly. The project’s page does not establish that this graphics path is complete.

Operating-system services and device behavior
Games also rely on system services and platform behavior for tasks such as files, timing, input, and communication between components. shadPS5 describes high-level emulation for operating-system services, meaning the emulator aims to reproduce the interfaces games expect rather than simply running the console’s system software unchanged.
Memory behavior, synchronization between CPU and GPU work, and the console’s storage and I/O design add further compatibility demands. A game may launch yet still fail to render reliably or behave correctly if one of those systems is missing or inaccurate.

What Sony’s PS5 specifications do—and do not—tell you
Sony’s March 18, 2020 specification article lists an 8-core, 16-thread Zen 2 CPU with variable frequency up to 3.5 GHz; an RDNA 2-based graphics engine; 16 GB of GDDR6 memory; and an 825 GB SSD with raw read bandwidth of 5.5 GB/s. These figures describe Sony’s console hardware, not the performance an emulator will achieve on a PC. They do not establish minimum PC requirements, emulator speed, accuracy, or game compatibility. How to judge claims about emulator compatibility
A game that starts is not necessarily playable, and a brief rendered frame is not evidence of a complete, correct session. Useful compatibility reporting distinguishes several stages:

- Boot: Does the game process start, or does it fail before launch?
- Rendering: Does it consistently show a menu or gameplay, or only produce isolated frames?
- Playability: Can a complete session proceed without blocking faults?
- Correctness: Do graphics, audio, input, timing, and synchronization work well enough?
- Evidence: Are results tied to a named title, emulator build, host hardware, operating system, game version, and tester?
The shadPS5 project page does not provide a title-by-title, independently verified compatibility table. Its status statement therefore supports no reliable count of playable PS5 games.

No. Sony’s backward-compatibility statement is about PS4 games running on PS5 consoles. PlayStation Support says the overwhelming majority of more than 4,000 PS4 games are playable on PS5, while warning that some features may be unavailable and some titles may show errors or unexpected behavior. The support page lists these PS4-only titles in its captured exception list: Afro Samurai 2: Revenge of Kuma Volume One; Just Deal With It!; Robinson: The Journey; We Sing; Hitman Go: Definitive Edition; and Shadwen. Sony says the list may change and excludes demos, media, and non-game applications.
Sony’s March 2020 announcement described evaluating PS4 games title by title for issues that might need adjustment by original developers. That historical account concerns Sony’s own PS4 compatibility work on PS5; it should not be read as a statement about third-party PC emulators.
